View Full Version : Please help my wife understand why I need a Jr. T
Carbuncle

So I've got this Iron Horse SGS, and it's a great bike but some of the spec'ed parts have gone by the wayside (I've put on Raceface bash guard, Diabolus stem and bars, and a sturdier bottom bracket is on it's way to me now) as I've stepped up my riding and been hitting some three to five foot drops and step-downs and little stunts around here. Last year, the year of learning, the '03 Psylo that came on the bike was fine, but now I'm bottoming it out on the bigger drops, getting ready to hit the real stunts in some of our local spots, and drooling over the May 28 opening date of Whistler. I want to upgrade the fork to an '04 Jr T, which I can get from Pricepoint for $400 US, but my wife needs to hear from an independent source (you guys) why
A: I need to upgrade to a dual crown fork and
B: Why $400 US is not a ridiculous price to pay for a fork.
While you're at it, tell her why I need some chest armor, too.
Thanks,
me

if you want to be safe. perhaps the purchase of these products will save you from injury as your riding progresses. without safe tools, you are not safe. $400 is a worthy price to get your bike up to speed with your riding. and a chest protector, well the benefit of the sheer safety it provides speaks for itself

Ask your wife if she would rather have you with money and in danger, or broke and safe.

tell your wife I am going to ban you and take away all the glee and fun times you have on this forum.
If she asks why...tell here I can't sit here and do nothing while you ride so dangerously without armour, and a dc fork. I just can't have it.
Upgrade, and you are set. And safe.

true that!
i work in a bike shop and these kids bring in bikes that are soooo sketchy, but they don't have the cash to fix them, and their parents won't float them a loan....
its scary.... Kids riding cracked frames, forks, bars. etc......

ask your wife if she would rather have 5" or 7";)
seriosly I would stress the increased strength/saftey of a dual crown fork, what would one trip to the ermerg cost, missed work, rehab. When your fork breaks its probly not goin to happen while your cruisin slowly on a nice loamy patch.
oh, and Jr. T is probly the most economical DC fork you would want.

you totally have the wrong idea
Buy the fork, don't tell her ,hide it or leave the bike in billy-bob's garage or some other silly lie
She will of course eventualy find out when she does she will rationalize your bad behaviour by saying to her friend "well at least he is not an alcoholic/drug addict/ addicted to pornography or Gay (not that there's anything wrong with it) and you will be forgiven
caveat : I am not married anymore,I have tons of gear but that came apres marriage

she will understand that it makes you happy and if she doesnt then just buy it anyhow and tell her she isnt the boss of you.

Just tell her the fork is on sale for 40% off. That's something she'll understand.
Get a Super T instead of the Junior T.

No , several buds who have bought skis/boats/kayaks and left them at their buds place .
when you are a gear slut often(thats me) you are often trying to sell gear to a guy who may have problems with getting it past the memsahib so you must be creative
When I sold my Tele-board to a bud in calgary I accepted several postdated checks that my bud could just slip thru .He also bought some new tele -skis from MEC without telling her and when she found out she was just happy it was only some gear which wasnt all that expensive

It's pretty sad when you have to justify an expenditure like the Jr. T upgrade.

*kwaa-peech*
(whipped sound)
but, Mr. Carbuncle, while explaining the safety benefits of the dual crown upgrade to the missus might seem like a good idea, dont go overboard with tarantino stylized descriptions of a single crown fork breaking and your eyes being gouged out by the splintered, jagged aluminum stantions...

It's sad because if it was a flowers/chocolates for Valentine's Day there probably wouldn't need to be any justification.

whenever i need to make a bike purchase we usually buy her the same amount or something she needs as well that way she never feels like im always getting something and she isnt.
just be honest with her and dont buy it and hide it.

02-16-2005, 12:47 AM
There's no need to hide things, and yes, you should talk about common expenditures, but everybody should have their own "play" money.

02-16-2005, 09:37 AM
buying and hiding gear is just one way
forget the practical reasons why cuz it will go right over her head or be taken out of context later anyway .
500$ is just 500$ ( or whatever)
probably talking about what you want ,what she needs or wants and working towards both of you reaching that goal is a more reasonable idea if you really want to be fair.
Tell her you swapped the fork with a buddy because he really wanted a shitty single crown.

You need a Super T not a Jr. T. If you do a search in the Gear Forum, you will find that the Jr.T is not well suited to Whistler (It packs up on repeated hits and bottoms out).
Super T is the fork you want ('03 is better than the '04).
Tell her the truth.
Your riding has improved so much that the forks you have now are a liability to your health. I think she has your health as a priority in her life and she should understand that you require the forks to be able to safely continue your pastime of riding.
This is basically what I told my wife when I needed to upgrade my bike.
And as far as chest armour goes....all I had to do was take my wife to a DH race and watch the race from a corner that has allot of wipeouts. After seeing a bunch of guys wipeout she actually drove me to the bikeshop and paid for half my upper body armour (Dianesse). I guess it is her way of saying she loves me.
Basically just tell her the truth.

dude, try this "Fine, you win. I won't get a JRT, I'll settle for LAST year model super T. Then you go get an 04 super and don't tell her the price. Or try "You have two choices, either I buy this fork, I'm I'm buing an ounce of cocain and learning how to use it... your choice babe"
hopefully she doesn't call your bluff.. I'd hate to be responsible for ANOTHER person OD ing ;)

Derwood finally hit on the key!
I've slowly trained mine to be as much of a gear pig as me! Now she's begging me for the upgrades on her wheels... and skis.... and windsurfer...
PS get the super T! Jr. is a waste of $$$. You need the better damping. Look at used Sherman's too. She got an 03 Sherman DC for $600 installed, and is shit happy with it, and I'm jealous.
Now I only need to convince her that I need the VP-free before she needs the Enduro SX Trail. Oh woe is me.

hahahahahahahahahaha you have no clue do you
Carbuncle: as for the fork...do you have some $$ left over to buy her something nice also? or maybe a weekend away or something to lessen the blow of the expense
before i rode a bike, and my SO wanted to get a new bike, or parts i never gave him grief because i spent money on stuff for myself (altho not nearly as much) and i knew riding made him happy. being single now i have no need to justify spending $$ on bike and parts :D its one of the few good things about being single

i could help out ...
and yes being only 20 i havent been married so essentially i have no clue, but i found it more funny than anything. hell if you need it for safety and mental wellness on the trail i dont think that theres really a price you can put on that.
Frames and occasionally forks are the only two thigs a woman will ever noitce changed on you bike anyway. all other components you can change at will.
speaking of the buy and stash, I had a customer who had a bunch of race horses his wife didnt know about untill she asked him what the trophies in his office were for.
Seems pretty obvious who's married and who isnt. Frightening how much there still is to learn once you think you've got it all down isnt it.
I've had lots of talks with my wife about such an expensive hobby. To the uninitiated, bike parts are rediculuously expensive, especially when "you just spent so much already ". My wife rides with me now and loves it, and finally understands why parts break and the need for saftey. Still doesnt mean she's real pleased when there's so many other places to spend the cash though. pm me and have her talk to my wife, maybe she'd feel better talking to someone who gets her point of view.

I had a freind whos wife told him you should name that new bike of yours Pam
"Why?" he asked

Gawd marriage is such a joke....
why do so many guys get such a uncontrollable urge to be placed on a leash for the rest of their lives?
lost too many good buddies to that scenario so far...
.... buy your fork and tell you're woman that you got needs, too.
So the recipe for a good marriage is to disrespect your wifes opinion and use as little real comunication as possible? Much better than discussing your finances and setting priorities. Great solid ideas there solar.

My wife works, I work. We pay the bills. If I have extra money, I'll spend it on whatever I want. It may be a fork, taking the family for a weekend vacation, putting money into an RSP, or whatever.
Just because you're married doesn't mean you're no longer an individual. I've known enough marriages where the couples had "become one", only to later end up with a failed marriage.
If a guy really wants a new fork, and his wife is holding him back, then what does that say about the marriage?

dont get me wrong switch I totaly agree with you. I just took solars post to read disregard what ever your wife says and do exactly what ever the hellll you want. I guess it was the marriage is a joke comment. I agree you've gotta make sure your getting what you need. This doesnt need to get in to a philosophical debate and lord knows I've spent thousands of dollars on my bike. Sounds like his lady just needs a little outside reasurrance though.

fist of all jr t is shit. get a super t or a slider plus.
second, tell your wife about uncle putty from the boards that damn near took his shoulder off when his single crown bought the farm at high speed. you might want to play the my face can't take that kind of abuse card...it works well.
its funny, because all i heard from my gf when i did not have is buy a bike, you need one to be happy, buy a bike.
so i did. now i am happy.

It all about the coaching staff.
When the players joined the team they knew what the coaches wanted from them. I personally recall the coaches saying, and they made it clear, that biking was an integral part of the team's success. If a player doesn't understand the system the coaches set out to follow.... she, I mean one, may find their ass on the trading block.
