has anyone ever done this or seen it done. it might sound realy dumb. but i was just thinging about it. kinda like old school road bikes with the shifters on the top of the down tube.
maybe it would be good for street DJ for bar spins and such. not that i have a street bike anymore.

My friend has it on the bottom of the downtube, looks decent and its homemade. Its only purpose is for street and djing.

I've seen a pic of just a regular indexed shifter clamped onto a seatpost. That would work well if you have a section of seatpost exposed and it is the correct size.

Or maybe if you could find a good place for it...a stick shift

some guy had a .243 a few years back pimped out with a shifter on the seat tube that had an 8 ball on it it looked rad. the only issue i have is that with my bike set up with a shifter i sometimes have problems with my chain derailling on spins to fakie at the skatepark and singlespeed would just be way easier!

If your bike has water bottle bosses on the downtube, it is easy. You can use any kind of shifter.
Take an old handlebar, cut a piece off that is a bit longer than the distance between the bottle bosses. Drill 2 holes right through the bar, preferably with a drill press, so they are straight. the holes need to be the correct distance apart for the bottle bosses on your bike. The holes need to be big enough for a bottle cage bolt to fit through.
Then redrill the holes on what will be the top side so the heads of the bottle cage bolts will fit through.
Mount your shifter on the piece of bar, and bolt it to the bottle bosses, you may need a couple of washers betwen the bar and frame to give enough space for the shifter clamp.
I willl post up a pic of my setup later so it is easier to see what to do.
edit:
Here is what mine looks like

I saw in one magazine, somebody used one of those shimano brake and shifter levers where if ylou go up or down it changes gears. Anyways they mounted this onto the downtube somehow so that you could change gears while pedalling if you moved your foot right up to the front of the pedal. You could use your foot to push the lever up and down and therefore chage gears on the fly. It was positioned far enough forward so you wouldn't hit it with rgular pedalling but it could be activated with the foot right on the tip of the pedal. The only downfall to this design would be the fat that this weak lever thing is hanging off the side of your bike and if you tend to pedal with your foot at the tip of the pedal you will probably change gears by accident. Anyways I thought I would post this because it looked interesting. Anyone else seen this done. I believe it was in a MBUK or Dirt magazine or something.

thumbshifters are pretty hard to come by these days. If I ever do find one the rapidfire will be gone real quick.

Neat idea... but if it's going to be used primarily for park and street, then why not just go SS?
