I was planning to pick up a pair before tomorrow's SFU rip and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with them? Good choice for riding?

These are the models I'm considering...

not designed for riding...

i doubt they'll be comfortable, my guess is they will have padding that will pack up around your grips...

why not hit a MX shop and buy a set of gloves, they usally sell better gloves then bike stores and for less to.

that last pair looks pretty good.

Never thought of using impact gloves designed for use with jackhammers. They'd definitely make fully rigid riding a lot more comfortable.

I got some carpentry gloves at the Home Depot for $20 and they rule. Ugly but strong and comfy.

I've used the regular series Mechanix Gloves. They work well if you have nice grips. You do get callouses though. But the straight up alcantara/suede palm is strong, and you get great feel. Just have to get used to it I guess. I sure didn't mind. I have to buy a new set. I killed the first pair. Warehouse work. Really great for street/Urban. For SFU, I'd still suggest a set of regular MTB gloves. As for M-Pact ones, I've never tried them on.

My old gloves are toast so it's time for new ones. Someone had mentioned Mechanix as an option, saying that they were better than any MTB glove. Great feel and very long lasting.

I guess I'll go try a pair on... and IFO, packing up in the palm is a deal killer for sure. I originally wanted the Impacs(carbon knuckle) for $35 from Overtime, but Gary's out of large :( Oh well.

Looks like a little snow this morning, should make for a fun ride :)

Me and a few friends (Eagle builder Darryl, for one) use nothing but M-pack II's. I'm on about my fourth set over about 3 years. One time I warranteed them when it came apart on a seam, but normally they live a good long life and die of old age. Very comfy, and the palm is just like most other bike gloves. Nice extra padding under the outside edge of your palm, right where it would sit on the outer lock-on collar. Perfect.

I'm on my third pair of MPIIs now. They fit great and last a really long time. They don't bunch up in the palm of you hand like the MEC ones I tried once.

They don't have much padding on the palm side, but you can sure punch a tree or the ground pretty hard before you regret it. Just make sure you make a fist if you fall. When it's raining they can get pretty waterlogged, but so do I.

I wear MEC polypro liners under them for more padding.

I've converted my wife and a friend to them too. Try Lordco, and find out a companies name that has an account there, and they'll give you a discount. Just pay cash for them, or else the company will be pissed. I imagine any garage near a Lordco will have an account... They were on sale before Christmas, and if they don't have your size, they will in a day.

Work real good for me. But if I am going to do some long XC, and any actual in the mountain riding, then I'll wear my fox gloves. But for Urban, and other kinds of bombing around, they work a charm.

I need something, that last one looks pretty cool.

I don't mind calluses, you can cut em off if you absolutely feel it's necessary anyway, but this past saturday i was at UAB (http://www.uglyassbikes.com/) and it was really warm and my hands were sweating like a bitch and i got the craziest blisters. So i'm on the lookout for gloves.

the more minimalist Rf gloves seem like-a-glove but i don't know about them keeping my hands warm.

I have the originals for wrenching on my truck/bikes and the fast-fits for at work. Both very good, although the fast-fits seem to fit looser around the fingertips. As for riding, I dunno.

EDIT: I guess that post was completely useless, given the context of this thread.

Which Impact gloves? Various companies use that name for a model of their gloves.

I think he means the Machanix brand, as that is the topic at hand, pun not intended.

I believe these are them(the $35 ones that Overtime is out of)...

...click on 'mountain biking', then the model '#525 DH-2'.

As for the Mechanix, I went to Lordco and they were out of the Mpact2 in large. The original Mpact was comfy, but with less protection. The one thing I noticed about the Mpact2 is that they offered lots of protection, but looked a little toasty. Not finding what I was looking for I headed down to Sports Junkies and scored a pair of Dirtpaws on the cheap. Good enough to tie me over until Overtime restocks.

Thanks for the opinions guys :)

yeah these are the ones im talking about rob. if you've never tried them on before do yourself a favor and try them on. these are the only gloves that actually fit me like a glove. its like they were made for me. every other glove ive tried is either too big or too small in some areas so it make the glove uncomfortable. these are not like that at all and they are also decently priced and the company is very good to deal with.

i have some lake gloves. the only issue i have now, is that they bunch up right at the bottle knuckle.. and are uncomfortable.. i need to find a glove for a big hand, and offers good protection, but breathes well.

In the last 10 years of riding, I have only wore out 2 paurs of this brand of mechanic gloves: http://www.mytoolstore.com/ringer/mechanic.html

I finally bought 2 more pairs this year. So far, so good - and I hit the dirt more often than I want to admit.

I had a look. They're called Impac Sting gloves. For $25, they've held up really well - still like new.

1- how do you people get gloves to last so long?

2- how can anybody stand all these gay graphics?
I proclaim moto styl dead

3- can it be so hard to make glove that doesn't make my fingers freeze from wind, without making it bunchy or sweaty, and capable of actual abrasive resistance?

Stronger/thicker material. Or, just don't wash them.

Who cares about the looks - they're fucking mountain biking gloves.

The ones like the Impac work pretty well. I can ride with them in termperatures down to around 5C without a problem, and my hands freeze up quicker than most people. Below that, you need some kind of windbreaking material, or wear something a very thin glove beneath the riding glove.

Some materials work better for wicking sweat. If I think my gloves will be getting wet (rain, sweat, etc.), I'll pack an extra pair. Dry gloves feel gooooood.

Gloves wear. You can get added protection, but they wear. I spent two hours moving rocks (on the trail) with a brand new pair of riding gloves, and the gloves were destroyed. Even decent work gloves don't last very long when you're moving rocks on the trail. Work gloves are cheap (like $5 a pair at Canadian Tire). That's what I get, and I also don't spend much on bike gloves.

by getting gloves that fit properly. if a glove is too big it will bunch up and rub funny and wear down quicker. also if its too tight then it can be stretched too much and rip at the seams. not falling also helps the longevity of gloves.

look at these. nothing wrong with them. although i dont really care about looks.

my hands get cold easily and these Impac ones work great in the cold. i used to do a morning MTB every morning at 7am before work and in Jan and Feb it was really cold some mornings and the gloves were great. if its a big problem then i would just wear a pair of those 99cent one size fits all gloves you can buy anywhere.
