I have a 04 Norco Atomik and I am looking into upgrading the rear end. I currently have a 7.5x2.0 shock with travel settings of 6.0, 5.5, 4.8 and also has a 9mm rear end. I want to get some 03 A-Line plates and a 8.5x2.5 shock for the rear end. Now, the few people I have talked to about this upgrade said everything would bolt up no problem with a slight change in HA and BB height.

I finally got the cash to start getting the parts together to make the swap, so I go into my LBS to run the idea by them and get there input. They basically told me I am going to need to buy new seat stays to make it work.

I just need someone who knows what they are talking about, or who have done any VPS upgrades?

The Norco website (I think in the FAQ's) tells you about this.

Check it out and see what you can find.

the 2004 and 2003 bike pages are currently down....so is the FAQ.

Anyway, I think I know what's up.

Your 2004 Atomik uses bushings with the chainring bolts at the link plate / seat stay pivot.

The 2003 A-Line uses sealed bearings here, and the link plates are a different design to accomodate this.

The 03 A-Line plates won't fit your seat stays because of this...so to make it work, you are going to need a new rear end.

^ he is right. all of which could be bought for the price of a used a-line frame.

I think Corey's point was that the faq always state that it would be cheaper buying a new frame than paying for all the parts and dealing with changes in the bike's geometry.

i gotta hook up from the source on whether it can be done or not, PM me with ur number and i'll get back to you on the details. or you can get a hold of me through ashogunnamedmarcus. i upgraded my 2004 VPS six with a full shore rear end, different shock and 150mm hadley hub but that was the entire rear end, i can find out for you if what you want to do will work or if you need the entire rear end off an A-line.

Nice offer..But we already know it can be done and what is required to do so.

He needs the complete A-Line rear end and link plates and shock.

may I ask why?

you have 6" now and all that to go to 8" . yah it's 2" more which is a fair bit but is it really? thats just my point of view-I would probolay just buy a new frame instead. but this is about you not me so I'll stop now:)

Currently I run my bike in the 6" position which is the highest leverage ratio thus the steepest HA and Highest BB. What I wanted was a rear-end I could adjust down in travel to slacken the angles and have a lower leverage ratio, and then when I want to get rad I can.

I have a line on a 7 7/8 x 2.25 shock. I am thinking of throwing this on the bike. Thoughs, suggestions?

I appreciate your help, but I'm pretty comfortable with my ability to read posts and navigate the boards.

Your question has been answered. Maybe the answer isn't what you wanted to hear, but it isn't going to work without switching out the correct parts.

The shock is too long. It won't fit properly on the existing rear end.
