I'm going to be getting some wheels built up. What I don't know are the pro's and con's for 32 hole as opposed to 36 hole. I'm assuming that the 36 hole are stronger correct ? They are also more expensive. Worth the extra $$ ?

there was a very usefull article somewhere floating around the net... it showed how those 4 spokes added a sabstantial gain in strength of the wheel.. i'll try to dig it up.

I've been wondering the same thing for my next build up, and I've found that most of the heavier duty rims and hubs that I've looked at have the 32 or 36 hole option, with out a price difference, and apparently the extra holes in the rim remove about the equivalent weight as 2 spokes, so for a weight issue, it is really only a two spokes difference... so that is something like 40grams per wheel (if your weight concious)... so if I can get the same stuff, that is stronger, for the same price, with a minimal weight penalty... why not go 36.

But I am curious, does anyone know if a lighter 36 hole rim would be as strong as a heavier 32 hole rim... say for example a 36 hole Mavic ex721(D521) vs. a 32 hole Mavic ex729 (D321)?????

Have fun

just pick out the rims you want and go to the website for and see if there is a 36 hole rim or if it is just a 32. most LBS won't carry the 36 if there is one, but they will order it for you.

Get 36 hole. 4 spokes doesn't weigh much, and the extra 4 spokes give you a substantial gain in wheel strength.
