using "wicking" under-garmets is the key to warmth.

copied from some web site:

Wicking Undergarments: Long Underwear clothing made of any one of a combination of materials such as silk, wool, micro fleece, and polypropylene. Wicking underwear will pull sweat away from your skin, which is then transported up through your layers to evaporate in the air - without taking away any body warmth.

I had some heavy weight silk long johns. they really work wonders. of course, you need to have breathable clothing, like Gore-Tex...

we're not talking high grade silk here. it's not shiney and pretty, or expensive.

morino wool tights from mec.

or 100 weight fleece if you don't need much warmth.
>200 if you need more.

Craft all the way, but it can be pricey.

Wicking undergarments and clothing pull the moisture away from your skin, unlike, say, cotton.

Damp clothing sitting next to your skin = Cold

All you need is some basic Hot Chilly's long underwear. It will cost you about $30 for a top or bottom, it is polyester, so it wicks moisture away from your skin, but doesn't stink like polypropylene, plus the Hot Chilly's can be thrown in the washser and dryer without worrying about melting it, unlike Polyrpo.

You can get Hot Chilly's at Comor or Westside Ski.

base layer should ALWAYS be 100% synthetic and never fleece either. fleece doesnt wick fast enough to be used in base layers. i VERY HiGHLY suggest kombi products...expecially the bi-polar stuff.

whoever says fleece is good for base layers doesnt know what theyre talking about.

I vote for Patigonia Capilene!

But, as you can see, everyone has their favourites on here mano. So, you're goan have to make your own choice.

Ive been using helly hansen poly pro, its been pretty sweet and never had any issues with melting.

I have been using the Helly Hansen base layer stuff for years. IMO it can't be beat. Its a little pricey, but I have never been wet or cold with it.

i mentioned this in another thread , but if you want THE best long underwear going , you should look at ICEBREAKER merino wool long underwear .

doesn't itch , doesn't stink ( ever ) , wicks great , and is super warm . you actually look forward to putting it on .

don't know where it is sold down in the city , but you can get it at the escape route in whistler . expect to cough up around 250 $ for a set , but trust me , you won't regret it . . . . .

It itches if you have even a mild allergic reaction to wool. Merino wool along with any other type of wool makes me itch like crazy.
