Can someone please explain to me what the difference between a video card with 12 pipelines and one with 16?

16 can hold more

something about more data getting to the gpu faster...less bottlenecks...

i don't really know anything about graphics cards, but i believe that's what pipelines mean when referring to a processor.

the more the better....generally(not always) the rule of thumb with computers

fanboy :o

The 6800GT trounces the X800 Pro in just about everything even though they're the same price (Nvidia has 16 vs. 12pipelines....surprise, surprise)

i thought you had a powerbook matt, did you go over to the dark side?

hehe its sold, but dont get me wrong i still hate pc's. i found out that i didnt have enough uses for the powerbook, and im buying a pc:mad: maybe next year though i'll get a nice g5 tower

there's a rumor that in the reasonably near future. there'll be a dual core dual processor g5...that's like having 4 processors!

matt shaw

i can see that but in at least 6/7 months. and imagine how much it would cost $$$$$$$$$$ no thanks.. do we even need more power anways? like the dual 2.5 is great and there are still barely any programs that use it to its full potential.

i know. i'm using a 600mhz g3 imac with 256mb ram and panther right now, with an external monitor, and it's fast enough to do everything i want to do. i'll be getting a 15" powerbook when they release the next series in january, but i won't be choked at all if it's still a g4.

apparently there's almost no noticeable difference in everyday performance between a dual 2.0 g5 and a 1.25 ghz g4 emac.

haha, maybe because they don't release a new driver for every new game?

I wish I had the coin for a 6800GT, my 9800XT will have to do for now :(

ATI was on top 20 years ago, then they faded for the longest of time, and only have made a comeback the last couple of years.

NVidia rocked the video card scene when they came out. Plus, the drivers worked, which ATI sucked at for years.

But it's good ATI made a comeback. The competition has made for some high performance video cards.

Oh, and the number of pipelines doesn't mean anything if a) they don't go anywhere, b) the hardware doesn't take advantage of them, and c) the drivers are written poorly.

This is stupid question.
