OK so I am not a great rider, but a friend of mine whom also rides wants me to bring him to North Van to ride. Here's the rub, he rides a Motive full suspension bike. I told him that he really should consider renting a bike to ride up there, he is harder on parts then I am......LOL He also rarely wears a helmet, and thinks armor is for pussies......so, should I bring him up and let him destroy his bike, not to mention bang the hell out of his head and or legs? Or let him come up on his own and not take the grief that is sure to follow when he has to bring his bike back across the border in more pieces than it came across in? :hurt:

BTW I was thinking 7th, Espresso combo for him :D

I wouldn't ever let my friend ride the shore w/o helmet. I know it's their choice and all, but I'd still feel responsible if they broke the shit out of their head...

No helmet-- NO RIDE! Tell him BLUNT BOY said so. If he wants to break his bike, that's his business. ;)

No offence to you, but your friend that wants to ride the shore without a helmet sounds pretty stupid. And doing so only creates the potential for him to become even more stupid (or dead).

What's a "motive" bike? Is it good or bad?

I wouldn't. Does he actually ride hard? Is he competent enough to ride the shore?

I'd say no helmet, no ride.

You make him sound like a hack. I dont know if he is but I think the shore will destroy him and his bike. Im just not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing.

who cares if he breaks his bike. it can be repaired, or at worst be replaced. not wearing a helmet or crash gear is a recipie for disaster. if he eats it and cant do a thing for himself because he smashed his head, whats the use in having a bike? i know first-hand that a helmet WILL save your life, but you cant force him to do anything. personally if it were me, i wouldnt ride with him. partly because you will feel responsibe if he dies or becomes paralized and secondly because people will partly hold it against you if he kills himself.

if he really wants to ride shore you should take him under the condition he wears a helmet. as for armour, thats really up to him. the only time i ever wear armour is when i ride the shore cause its quite bad to fall on rocks and roots

aboslutely no way w/o a helmet. As for the armor, he will someday learn the hard way.

hmmmm, costco bike and thinks he doesn't need armour or a helmet.

i'd do one of two things. either refuse to take him, or take him to gmg/flying circus (or something quadruple black diamond) and put the fear of God in him.

I don't think he has a firm grasp of what it's like.

Yikes! Kind of frightening. It will cost your friend more $$$ than just for his bike if he has to pay for the hospital fees, ICU time, medical care etc. when he cracks his head open... You'll need to pay for that, as your from the States. Maybe that'll get him to wear a helmet.

LOL Thanks Ya'll, the helmet thing was a no brainer....... And some sick part of me really wants to see that Motiv bust right in half...... I'll get him to wear a helmet, and once he sees a lot of people wearing full gear he may get the picture. Oh and I'll make sure he packs whats left of his bike out :D As far as riding he is no slouch, he has packed on 53,000 miles in the last 7 years..... though I'd say 85% is on road.

That's good that you're going to make him wear a helmet.

The first time I rode "the shore" it was definitely an eye opener. I didn't have any armour either - I honestly had no idea what the trails were like. I was a good xc rider, who couldn't understand why anyone would want their seat lower than their bars. I grew up in Alberta, there aren't many hills there. Luckily, I had a great tour guide (thanks fergs!) who showed me the ropes. So my advice, would he to go with a larger group, or at least someone who knows what they're doing if you can. My perspective on mountain biking changed, maybe his can too?

dont let him ride the shore with no helmet, especially for his first time on the shore.

Safety should be priority number 1.
Don't let him ride the North Shore without helmet and armour.

helmet:
I had an endo on Cypress on saturday and landed on my head. got up and kept on riding. without it I am sure it would have been game over. enough said.
Armour:
after my head first landing I ended up on my back and ass. had full armour on and again got up and kept riding. enough said.

I dunno, people make the shore sound as if it is impossible unless you ride a fs or any other bike more than 2Gs. I rode pipeline one time and passed a guy riding it with an old hybrid (no suspension and skinny tires). I stopped at the bottom and he was basically right behind me. There are definitely trails on the shore for all levels of riding, although I would still recommend at the very least a helmet. If he's capable and doesn't mind buying new bike parts go for it.
