It was great getting out on Sunday to give my favourite trail, Espresso, a little face lift.
Can't wait to ride the new stuff cleanly.
Mark - 1) When are you thinking about finishing bldg the log ride?
2) Good riding on Tues with ya - lets hook up next week - maybe Tues again?

Just to point out - some of the new work on Espresso (the rocks that were added) were not put in well and many have shifted all over the place. Won't be too much longer before it's just a rock garden of movable small boulders.
If I get a chance I'll try to shore some of it up - we did it at night and had light issues to deal with so no time (or tools) to dig and replace the rocks.

thanks pete for taking the pics!
Yes some of the rock work was a bit loose, that' how people learn! At least is there and if you go in and fix it up that would be great!

Affirmative on that - it shall be primed and pimped this w/e.
Anyone else riding down the trail to check out the work, what would really help is if you see some old ladder bridges that have been ripped out and other debris laying around take a couple of minutes to move it into the bushes out of site where it can rot away in peace. There's nothing worse than having the trail look like a construction zone.

^ in Sharon's NSMBA writeup, she reports that the 'debris' was left there so people ride the ladder bridge, and not around it.

That's funny. I fixed that particular thing. It's the flexible log ride after the big smooth rock ride. And I left the offcuts there because I ran out of time to clean up, not to stop people riding around it. So, I'm going back there this weekend to clean it up. And I'm going to clean up all the other crap that was left lying around. If anyone wants to help, they're welcome.

yeah, i think that was a misquote or something. you never want to leave debris laying around in the fall zone of a stunt as someone could get injured that way

But leave loads of debris (natural looking if possible) to block alternate lines that people create because they are too nervous to ride something and too lazy to get off and walk. I guess it's a balance between keeping it safe and stopping braiding and widening.

The quote was as follows... maybe its wrong :P
Rungs were added on this bridge. Debris is left at the side of the bridge to keep people from riding off the bridge.
agreed... its ugly and potentially a hazard... i'd be happy to help clean it up this Sunday, as long as i'm not steppin' on any toes :)

This I totally agree with. Already on Espresso less than a week after establishing the new line down the rock slab (which isn't hard at all) ajoining synchros new log ride, people are braiding a line that has exposed sensitive tree roots. I blocked that off last night. I blocked it and we'll define it more on the weekend.

I just saw the volunteer work summary page for the first time. Great idea to have that on the Web site, Sharon.
It would be amazing if we could get all the trail builders to voluntarily track/report their hours to arrive at a yearly total.
I'm sure the resulting number of volunteer hours would blow away the DNV and community at large.

Deeds, I said the debris was left so I could justify why it was in the picture. I sounds better then to say people just didn't get around to cleaning up after themselves...I send these pictures to the district so they can see the work we have done.
Sanrensho, if you scroll down you will see another list of work done by volunteers on their own time, the trail they've worked on and the number of hours worked. For some of the trails i have pictures of the work, for others I'm still waiting for the guys to get me the pictures and tell me what they have done so I can update the list.

Doh! Thanks for pointing that out. Great work, Sharon.
Now if we could only figure out who the mystery trail angels are on Bridle Path and Will's Way.

SHE's DONE!
Me and Dean hiked up Espresso this AM. Shored up and back filled 2 badly rutted lower sections, groomed a few spots, finished Marks log ride/ramp, cleaned up all the left over crap from trail day, fixed a few drainage spots. We hiked down Ladies on the way home. Cut out the big dead fall that was blocking the trail, fixed all the busted rungs, and put in a new section that had rotted away, and met Sharon's sister.
Espresso and Ladies are now both in primo shape.
I knew you were just covering for my sloppy work in your writing, Sharon. That's cool.
We figured a new way to get lots of people to trail days. We advertise it for the week BEFORE we actually want to do the work. Tons of people went by today, and invariably they said 'oh yeah we heard there was a trail day last week, so we thought we'd come down and check it out'. So, we say we're having one on say the 3rd, but really we have it on the 10th, get all the tools in there and grab all the slackers who come to check out the work, and put them to work.... hahahaha. We have such fun hatching devilish plans when we're out trail building.

hahahah I'm so guilty, I always ride trails immediately afer trail days just to see whats been worked on. Of course, I do my fair share of work too so I don't feel too guilty.
the new log ride on eXpresso is nice (2/3 of the way down), trickier than it looks. I was also glad to see that some of the gnarlier lines were not filled in, kudos for leaving them as is

If you see them, ask if they are rocking in the step-downs. One step-down was done beautifully. But the other day someone just piled a bunch of small boulders on one, and that was dangerous.

When people get wise of that one (2007 or 2008 knowing people) we can say we're working on the two trails beside whatever trail it really is... funnel em in.
