your kneepads boys and girls.

NO, NOT FOR THAT YOU SICK MINDED PERSON ;)

but seriously, I would recomened wearing kneepads everytime you ride. Let me elaborate. Back in March I was riding my bmx at Millenium here in Calgary when I fell outa the clover bowl and landed directly on my knee. keep in mind I was not wearing kneepads. I went to the doctor and found that I had fractured my patella (kneecap). So I had to wear a splint and walk on crutches for about a month and a half. After this, my knee still hadn't healed, so I had to take it easy for another month and a half, before I was back to normal.
Now last Saturday (11th) I was back at millenium and my front tire slipped out fron under me on a wet box and I fell on my knee again. I was wearing my kneepads, but it felt exactly like the first time. I went ot the hospital and the jackass doctor there looked at my knee, said it was fine, and sent me home without even taking xrays. So i try to go about my normal life, thinking I just had a bruised knee, but It kept hurting. So i went to my family clinic doctor on monday, and had xrays done. This morning I went in, and my kneecap is now fractured again. We don't really know if it just never healed, or if it healed and I refractured it, but the bottom line is, If i had been wearing my kneepads back in March I probably wouldn't have done what I did. I woudn't have had to miss the end of snowboarding season, and the beginning of biking season. And I realize theres not much I could have done to rpevent the injury last week, since I was wearing the kneepads, but I think the story speaks for itself. WEAR YOUR KNEEPADS!!!
Ive broken a few bones over the years (wrist & collarbone) and let me tell you guys, the knee is FAR WORSE. you can't walk, you can barely get around, and its MUCH harder to heal since almost all of your body weight is supported by the knee. Plus all the bending it has to do, its really hard to heal it. Think of your knees people, when you are 30 do you still want to be able to walk? Because if I have any more knee problems I might not be able to walk when I'm 30. Think about that.

The bottom line is, you need your knees. They are more important that you could ever realize, anyone who's had a knee injury will vouch for that. So please, do yourself a favour, and next time you go for a ride, put on your kneepads. It could save your life.

Sucks that you had to learn pretty much the hardest way possible.:(

I had an experience a month or so ago on the trails where I wore my knee/shins but no forearm/elbows. Washed out hard on a slippery corner and my forearms look like they were used as a scratching post for a cougar.
The next day, I looked at my knee/shin pads and sure enough there was a nice carve on one of the knee pads.
I shudder to think what my knee would be looking like without them.

true that, I ate it soo hard on some dumb jump I have hit like 100 times before. I was doing a whip and my handle bars got caught in my shorts, and I went down super hard on a super packed landing, causing my arms and legs to get brutaly cut up. The cuts were soo bad they are still healing and it's been almost a month.

PS. the docters said I didn't have enough skin left to sew :S

My friend shattered his knee cap probably a bit over a year now and he had it put back together with plates. He still walks with a limp and cant run or ride a bike again in his life. He is getting man made knee caps put in pretty soon because his is so fucked up right now. He did this while he was riding, he went to do a pedal kick gap and his chain broke. His knee went straight into the concrete and it just shattered into like 14 pieces.

Ironic this thread would come up a week or so after the "does armor = invincibilty" thread.
Just thought I'd mention that.;)

well im sitting here on day 2 with major knee problems. I just landed on my feet and my left gave out. Swollen like about 3 times bigger than my right knee.. 4 hours in emergency later. They tell me that my medial meniscus is probably torn.

Hurts like nonother to me.

Meniscal tears are brutal.

I know exactly how it feels, and it is BAD. The kind of pain where you can't just suck it up, the leg actually gives out and it hurts so much you feel sick.

Been there. It is a lengthy recovery I am afraid. Ice it, take anti-inflamatory drugs, and stay off it until the swelling goes down.

I re-injured mine last April, and I am just finally feeling more confident in my knee again.

I know 2 people who fractured their patellas. Both refractured them again after they supposedly had healed. From what I understand, patellar fractures are really bad because all the ligaments and muscles pull radially outward on the patella. Basically, they are set up to yank your patella apart, and even after the bone appears to fuse back together again, the stress on the bone makes it susceptible to fracturing again. D.

Torn cartilage, right? It doesn't heal. All they can do is cut the flappy bits out and try to smooth it off. Welcome to the old mens club. Bone on bone at the knees. Yes, I couldn't get through life without ibuprofin.

how long did it take for them to fully heal?
i thought it had fully healed because i had NO PAIN at all for like 4 months on it. Seemed to be 100%.

Even now I have almost no pain at all. Feels pretty much fine. Its hard to keep off of it because it feels normal, so I don't even have that "injured mentality" where im super careful with it. Didnt hurt when I first broke it either.

I hope I can ride ina few weeks tho. goin to an orthopedic specalist next week so wish me luck!

Im just learning to dirt jump the medium set at the hoodlums. Do you think I should wear kneepads or will it just limit my manouvrability and make crashing more likely? Also, should I wear my full face helmet or will it just limit my vision and maybe skrew me up. Thnx for ur posts.
