View Full Version : Getting back on the bike....

Broken ankle 8 weeks ago now (roughly). The doctor gave me the OK to ride my bike nearly 3 weeks ago now...and I've only found the motivation to get on it maybe...3 or 4 times. My tendons and shit are all still very sore, and will take a bit more time to be back to 100%, but because of that I can't actually do anything on my bike that I could before. I can't jump at all, hell I can't even bunnyhop to get up curbs without serious pain. It's just not even fun at this point.
Anyone else who has recovered from injury had this same problem? Any pointers on getting past this part?
Thanks

dont worry about doing tricks and stuff right away. just get back on the bike and get used to riding again. itll come back. i just recently got back on the bike being off since beginning of april for no particular reason. it feels good.

Time to road bike until your tendons are back to 100%.
Motivation? If getting exercise and fresh air isn't motivation enough, then consider the fact that you might end up in better shape than before you got injured.
Try to spin, too. That will improve your pedal stroke and place less stress on your legs.

Yeah, you're not going to be near as strong as you were prior to your mishap. Your legs will slowly come back around - just don't force them to do what they're not conditioned for...yet.
Good luck - welcome back and keep riding!!

When I tore my ACL 2 summers ago, I rode a stationary bike for a while (I have a gym at work), and then graduated to a roadbike with flat pedals. Stationary bikes are really boring and don't really spin like a real bike. Bring music and/or stuff to read. If you are doing physio, your physio might have a stationary bike, but a roadbike is much better therapy. I also tried weights (leg presses and leg curls), which I suspect may have done more harm than good. Cycling is the ultimate low-impact, weight-bearing leg exercise. I also treaded water in a diving tank a few mornings a week. D.

I broke my humorous and was out for 8 weeks two years ago, that is you like upper arm, it snapped right off the ball in your shoulder socket, and i started riding after only 5 weeks, just one handed cruising around and filming my buddies. you can make it fun. after i got enough mobility to get my hand on the bar and actually go a little fast it was like i had been in prision and i was free, i just blasted around and it was awesome, i couldnt even lift the front wheel over curbs but i could stiill road ride, and that was fun, after awhile i got enough strength to ride hard and was back on track, it was sweet.

I'm just getting back from a broken colar bone. It's not the motivation to ride again that the issue, it's all the commitments I made when not riding that I've got to honour now, even though I'd rather spend my time on my bike.
I'm just to busy due to pre-health scheduling.

I told you all those tupperware parties would amount to no good.

I was off 10 weeks for my tib/fib and everything hurt,I couldnt squat on my haunches with my knees totally bent,I couldnt even walk down stairs at 1st
you can't do the same things as before so set small goals, when you reach a goal set another one,hit the gym, ride x-country above all you gotta move cuz everything
has atrophied
eventualy you will get back to where you were
Mikey, I went through similar problems with my torn ACL. Hell, I could barely walk for a while without pain, it just takes time to heal. You've got your entire life to ride a bike, so take it easy now and make sure the ankle heals up proper. Start pedalling around, stationary bike is probably best as you don't want to be tempted. Look into a beater road bike if you don't already have one and start riding it around. Swimming is good to do as well.
I assume you are getting at least some PT? Listen to what they say, push yourself a bit, but for the most part just go with what your body tells you to. If it hurts to bunnyhop then you probably shouldn't be doing that, chances are the quack you had looking at your foot didn't realize that you bike by jumping off of roofs and shat, so take it slowly. Remember that stretching is good for you.

I've found it. Riding road with some good music is definatly the way to go for now. Although just since I posted this the strength has come back ten fold. I can bunnyhop now with zero pain. I can also take the bumps found on the Calgary roads with zero pain as well. The motivation is coming back bit by bit. But I really just want to be able to get airtime, but I'm not going to do anything like that till the doctor gives me the OK to do so. But until then I can almost walk 100% without a limp, and I can finally do stairs one after the other again.
I've been riding as much as possible as well as playing around on a wobble board and the fact that I work everyday standing and walking around has probably helped a lot to get muscle and movement back again. I just can't wait to be back at 100%.

seriously look into getting an "Active Ankle" brace. It keeps your ankle secure while giving you lots of front and back movement via a moving joint. it was recomended to me by other riders and I would in turn recomend it to anybody else.

don't worry mikey, I'm sure you will find the motivation eventually!
i tore my ACL in april 04 and right now i can walk fine and all, just that couple times in the morning it hurts like day one in the bones when i step on it.
also, my tendons are very very stiff and crakidy, i woudl probably have to get that checked out soon.
i think i m not 100% still because i did not do alot of physios in the early sessions and abused the ankle more after it sorta healed. Right now my left one is aroudn 80% functional compared to my right one which is a OK.
