View Full Version : Brake lever proximity to your bars...

I have just bled my brakes to allow the lever to come with in half an inch of touching my bars while locking up the wheels. I had WAY too much arm-pump while running the lever far away from the bars and so now, I thought I'd try this.
I am curious as to where other people have their levers lock up their wheels in relation to the bars.

I like my lever set far away from the bar and the whole leevr assembly inwards from the grip and I use 1 or 2 fingers to brake.
Rather than setting lever reach by screwing with the amount of fluid in the master cylinder (If I am understanding your post correctly) I would bleed the brakes normaly and set the lever reach by using the pre-load screw, the one that always backs out on hayes and you have to blue loctite ... good luck with yer method

I hear you. I had so much fluid in the system that the lever-throw screw would not move the lever any closer. It moved it away no problem.
To clarify, I use the one-finger method and my finger pulls at the end of the lever blade.

I would bet yer pads are very worn (almost worn out?) and so after you bled the brake there was alot of fluid in the mastercylinder?
If so you will need to bleed again when you replace the pads with new ones...to get the right amount of fluid in the master

it have it set as close to the bar as possible without the lever hitting my middle finger when brake is fully depressed. (i use 1 finger to brake)
less then 1".... the Avid juicy's are primo for just such a setup...
i can basicly ride with all 4 fingers wrapped around the bars...

arm pump is a thing of the past for me now...

No sir. Brand new brakes with brand new pads. Well, four rides on them.

For some models of Hayes brakes, you can bend the lever so that it's closer to the bar.

If you're 4 fingers are wrapped around the bars? what fingers are you using for braking?

I used to set them about a finger thickness away from the bar. But I find with integrated shifters that it works better a bit further out. As long as I can get my fingers arounf the lever I'm happy. I always use at least my middle finger or index and mid on the lever. I have short fingers and the middle finger is my longest finger and has therefore the best reach.
