I used to use Grey Hound for my my work stuff. They lost packages ALL OF THE TIME and they do not have a tracking method.

I would steer VERY clear of Grey Hound for shipping anything of value.

What shop is it being shipped from? Is it being delivered to another shop or to your home?

either from aka in port moody or my house to a dorm in kamloops. the hound station is just up the street so i thought that it would be best, seeing as how i cant have it shipped to my door

avoid greyhound like the plague. they broke my brothers computer and lost my sisters G5 for a month.

i've been fucked by them and it hurts .
they pay out something miserable , like 5 cents per pound , on items that THEY lose for you .
i'd ride the bike to the loops before i'd ship with them . . . . .

I've had great luck with Greyhound. I even shipped a frame to Connecticut - no probs.

I'm about to send a frame and fork to prince rupert, and I was first looking at greyhound since it's like 25$ to send it there

Canada Post wanted 68$ to send my bike to abbotsford. yeah OK no

Who else is cheap?

Ive never ever had problems with Greyhound. my folks use the courier service daily and we have never had any complaints about it.

The issue with the dog is that they have no tracking system. If they put it on a wrong truck (bus) you can foget about getting it back!

I spoke to the Grey Hound rep at my office once as I was asking him about sending a package to Toronto from Vancouver. He told me not to do it because my package would be changing buses 17 times! Yup, off one bus and on to another - 17 times!

Combine that with no tracking method and the possibility for a fiasco is high!

Pay more, worry less.

I have shipped several WW kayaks greyhound no problem for about 30$ or so and my bud gets them sent all the time from calgary to PG.They are about the same size and weight as a bike

Of course a kayak will take a beating without any wrapping,I would stick yer bike in a box from the LBS with lotsa paper, cardboard and bubble wrap

van to the kamloops should only be one bus

its just cardboard that they gotta recycle themselves or pay to have the dumpster pickedup.

We had a lbs where the manager tried to charge a kid 5$ ,sent him back to see the shop guy I was yacking with, the shop guy told him to grab one out the back and don't let the manager see ya

somebody who would hit you up $$ for a cardboard box is pretty cheap IMO

ah sweet thanks! I just need to figure out when I'm sending my frame this week, and then I'll give matt a call and ask him. Is there ANY possible chance you can have him drop one off at my house ;) he lives super close to me and drives past my house everyday with his pimp truck

btw, tell him nice paint job

that makes sense, but my canada post it run by the 2 biggest morons you have EVER met. first of all, if you asked how much it would cost to send a parcel to kamloops (or wherever), they would ask you what a parcel is. i'm serious  like i've said before, they wanted 70$ to send a bike to abbotsford over a 14 day period. (btw, abbotsford is about 30 minutes from me).

I've shipped tons of stuff with GH and never had a problem, my bike has gone all over with them, and I've also shipped my comp a bunch of times. They're cheap and they do have insurance that isn't too pricey, just make sure you get more insurance than you think what you're sending is worth.

As for bike boxes, yes generally they are free, but a few bucks to the beer fund never hurts, especially if they aren't building bikes right then and had to unbox one for you. Oh, and b/c cardboard is worth $$, you often don't have to pay to have it picked up.

No problems with Grey Hound I have shipped a bike to Montreal $80. Just remember they charge you and extra 30% (?) for over sized articles.

is it based on weight or size? if its size, i'll have to pack my frame/fork small :)

if it was 80$ to montreal, i'm sure it'd be pretty cheap to send it up north in bc :???:

I think Vic-PG was like 30$ for a bike, I sent a frame once and I think it was $20 or so.

30 for the bike 170 for insurence (sp?) and i'm not going to send my vp-free up without insurence because if it gets lost i'm fuk@d. so it looks like i'll be waiting:(

Vancouver to Kamloops with the weight of 50lbs shipped station to station is $20.47 plus the added 35% for over sized package= $27.63. over size for ground shipments is anything having 2 dimensions of 24" and greater or one dimension of 36". This info is taken from the 2004 rates book for greyhound. It sounds like a good deal to me.

I've shipped my bikes Via the hound tons to lots of small towns with bus transfers, but only a couple times out of B.C. hell I even had one show up of Fort Fucking Neson intact and on time.

Van city to the loops should not be a problem. heres what I do. don't worry about insuance, pack your bike properly and you should have no wories. I take my peddles and brakes (hydos) off and pack them with me. one less worry. leave the rear wheel on, DUH, Zip tie every thing else secure, including crank arm to frame. tape your 20mm axle in (pushed through the front triangle if you get my drift) so it will not move, figure out a way to protect your derailer (small cardbord box, yogart container), though I have shipped it lots with out any protection, just put it in in the low gear, closest to the wheel. loosen up your shifers so if they get whacked some how they will move. MAKE DAMN SURE NOTHING METAL IS TOUCHING ANYTHING ELSE METAL. plaster the fragile stickers all over the box

sounds like a hastle, but so far I've had zero problems, and between bus rides and airplanes I ship my bikes a lot.

P.S. a little trick, if you can get away with it, when they weigh your bike for shipping, lean the package against the meter part of the scale or try to 'lighten' up the package some how. :P

Heres the deal on this question:

First they will weigh your bike.

THEN they measure the size of the oversized box. I can not remember the equation. It was length x width x height divided by (something). This number then becomes a newer "weight".

They take the larger of the two.

I went to Ship a frame, wheel, seatpost to Conecticut - only weighed 32 pounds (including huge Rocky Mountain bike box). Then when they measured up the box, the shipping weight (calculated by their measuring) it became a shipping weight of 52 lbs.

At 52 lbs, it was going to cost me $240 to ship this new frame to Conecticut with $1200 insurance.

I went home, and cut and slashed the box down in SIZE. Not only did I manage to shed 5 lbs of physical cardboard, but the measurement "weight" came down to 40 lbs - and it cost me $140 to ship the bike then.

Hope that helps.
