something stupid

Thats it..i think im converting to bmx'ing..ive been thinking about it for a long time, watching animals "can i eat" just pushed me over the edge. I ride an mtb which is really just a large heavy bmx..So i figure why not dumb it down bike-wise...save some cash..keep it simple, and ride a bike that it seems you progress alot faster on. The kind of riding im doing it doesnt even seem that logical to not ride a bmx. MY only problem is gonna be the switch. Itll take awhile..and id like to ride one (bmx) for awhile before i buy one and sell my bike..which i will have to do. OHHHHHHHH decisions are hard......

its not that hard. if you ride mtb street just get a bmx, you can get the best bmx on the market for the price of a half decent mtb and ride way better with more options for it. :)

true when i was looking at bmx's the top of the line macneils were almost $1400. you can get a decent Norco ht for that price.

You can get pretty damn close

Lets take a Stolen Wrap for example, $300 at DansComp.com and a pretty solid bike, it will take awhile until parts start breaking, with the exception of a sprocket since it is absent a sprocket guard. Specialized P.2 is something like $800, thats less than half the price and more than half the fun compared to riding bmx on the street.

My advice to whoever wants a bmx for street riding is to keept the mountain bike and look for a cheap bmx until you give it up or decide to buy a new one. I bought my new Vegas for $100! Just got to look around. When I bought my BMX I kept my Mountain bike, just to tool around on once in a while, but its not really necessary.

yeah a decent norco, but a top of the line mtb is more like 2.5 to 3 grand. Ive been looking at them too.

Go for it man! BMX rules it! You will never look back I promise! I was in the same situation and I decided to convert and I still think it is the best riding decision I have ever made. By the end of you're first ride the only thing you will regret is all the money you wasted on mountain bikes.

As for the misconception idea, a top of the line Mcneil will take a beating and keep coming back time and time again. The decent Norco on the other hand will have a worn out drivetrain in a year, the fork will have to be waranteed in a couple of months, not to mention all the derailluers you will kill, cables you will have to replace, wheels you will need to get trued, in short say goodbye to all the constant maintenence associated with MTB.

In the 5 months I have had my BMX all I've had to fix were flat tires and the bike still runs as smooth as the day I got it.

Go for the bmx, unless your sole purpose is to ride trails they just make a lot more sense, cheaper and stronger in the long run plus more possibilities, if your one of those who have a bad back, buy a cruiser, convert, youl like it.

no

a "stolen wrap" eh. norco makes decent bmx's, there is nothing special at all about them. comparing a $400 20 inch bike to a $2000 mountain bike is just that. you can easily spend $2000 on a bmx, my friend just did. this isn't a bragging match over who can spend the most on their bike, its just that people think bmx is cheap.

a cheap bmx is a piece of trash, just like your cheap mountain bike will be if you ride it. you are not ever going to compare them by looking at completes. like i said, there are rarely ever any good completes out there.

Wrong!

My BMX retails for $850.00 cdn and it is an awesome BMX! Try getting a MTB for that kind of cash that won't break down in a few good rides.

Just one Q:

Don't take this in a negative way (PLEASE!), but why do you post on the north shore MOUNTAIN BIKING forum when you only BMX? This has confused me for awhile, and now I must ask.

I work in a MTB shop so I like to keep informed of events and whats going on in the industry. Some of my friends are on this forum too and I was on it a lot before I made the switch.

Yeah, u do need to explain it further,
look at what your paying for.
an 800 dollar bmx
no suspension
1 speed
cheap chromo cranks
1 brake

800 dollar mtb
suspension
27 speeds
cheap aluminum cranks
2 brakes

yeah it might break down over time, but not if its run clean and to its purpose of being an xc bike..

run that bmx through mud and crap for 5 months then tell me how its standing up

a 400 dollar complete bmx will not last if u ride it like a top level street rider, neither with a 1000 dollar mtb if ridden like the pros of this era..

i just grabbed myself a cheap bmx and its holding up great. all i ride is djs and park so it seemed like a good move. and i had 800 to spend id buy the wtp all the way...i spent 800 on an used norco 250 like 6 months ago and well its pretty much done.

if i wanted to ride street, it would be the bmx, if i wanted to go ride some xc it would be the fusion.

there ya go and the entire purpose of this thread is strictly street so your arguments about dirt and trail are meaningless. If you buy an 800 street mountainbike from norco say as they have the best value out there, you will probably completely fuck the cranks, rings all that, breaking the fork, no problem, hitting the rotors etc, messing up the big wheels trying to learn spins.
BMX for the same price as mentioned, pretty much bomb and very versitile for tricks and stuff. You can NOT argue that tossing an mtb around and doing spins and grinds and stuff is better on a mountainbike.

ahhhh,i love this debate.
IMO, the only way you can justify riding a MTB for a BMX purpose is if you were stupid enough to build one up specifically for the purpose of having an MTBMX, and now youve realised your parents won't buy you a BMX, and that you're stupid MTBMX is a potentially worthless peice of crap, having cost you're good ol' tax paying parents a few thou(nothing to write home about), and it's really really limited considering the amount of money your nice parents spent on it because you oh,lets say had something like good grades or you cleaned your room.

and yeah..i got way off topic when i started associating MTBMX's with rich kids who have even richer parents.for shame.

Well if all you do is ride on the street/park, get a bmx. No point in riding a mtb..

I agree! It kind of got me thinking that maybe I should sell my hardtail since I only ride street on the BMX. Wow, the way you put it I realized I dont even need it anymore. The only reason I keep it is to ride with a friend that ride street on a hardtail but I rarely see him? What do you guys think? Sell it?

That's such a "cover your ass" answer.
Everyone here knows (including yourself) you would get the bmx over the cheesy xc bike.
