View Full Version : Racer pigs

I was out for a nice xc ride last Friday in Squamish, but I ended up having a bit of a problem keeping my flow. You see, I have this habit of picking up garbage (especially biker refuse) when I see it on the trail. I just hate the idea that other trail users would see our trash and think we're a bunck of pigs. Well, obviously not everybody feels this way, because all over the North Shore Credit Union Gear Jammer race course was garbage... biker garbage. I ended up stuffing my camel back with various power bar cliff bar and gu wrappers. Eventually I just didn't have enough room for any more so there's still lots left, not to mention all the ribbons and signs that were put up for the race.
There is no excuse for leaving such a pile of #@$* in the woods. The racers should do better than drop their trash, I mean it's not like half a second will matter to them, it's not exactly World Cup. How hard is it to tuck your trash into a pocket you pigs?
Secondly, the race organizers should do a helluva' lot better job cleaning up after the race. There were still discarded water bottles in pretty obvious areas. The race was held on July 24th, I was there on the 31st. Maybe someone has been back to clean up the race since, but that's beside the point. Animals drag a lot of the snack wrappers away into the woods; case in point was the nibble marks on some of the wrappers (or are racers more like rats every day?). You have to clean up immediately, either that day or the next morning. Also, it might be asked how it can be assumed to be race trash. Well, the course was filthy, the rest of the trails were clean. Secondly, who else sucks back all that Gu and crap? It isn't the free ride crowd. So to those who race and waste, don't just leave your crap out for others you jerks!
Now I know most racers are conscientious and probably pack in what they pack out, but to the exceptions,, you suck! Here's what I have in mind. I'll be up in Squamish again this weekend or shortly thereafter. If there's still race trash left around, I'm going to pick up the rest and deliver it to the North Shore Credit Union head office. I wonder how that will affect the sponsorship for the race organizers next year. I'm hoping someone has already cleaned it up, but my disdain for your delay and initial sloppiness remains. I will be following through on this, so if you don't want to look like a bunch of slobs to your main sponsor, clean it up now!
cheers, vigilante samaritan

Let's just say that dog-poo man made the mistake of leaving his truck unlocked when he went into the mall. So I made I grabbed a plastic bag, scooped the poop, and made said deposit upon the front seat of his truck. Then I waited for him to come out so I could laugh and take his picture. Unfortunately I was giggling so much I misfocused the shot, but his expression was priceless. Don't cross the cerealkilla'

Did you send an email to the event organizers ? If not, you should. If they don't respond or give you a hard time, let them know that you will contact the main sponsors of said event to let them know that you are not at all pleased at the clean up effort the event producers put it.
There is NO reason for refuse to remain after a race. I am positive the sponsors would not be happy recieving that information. It makes them look bad and it makes teh event producers look bad. I doubt the sponsors would come on board for teh next year if that were to happen.
Props on the clean up through...and thanks on behalf of all those that don't thank.
Jay.

Yeah, the same thing after the NS Enduro races - trash all over the woods in the LSCR that I packed out

This is freaking BS that those race organizers do that.
Chances are some of the shit will spill onto the NSMBA, and they get very, very little support from the race organizers, even in the cases where they use trails maintained by the NSMBA.
ceralkilla, what area are you referring to where the race was? LSCR?

It sounds like the organizers messed up. I would think it is standard procedure to sweep the course, pick up trash and remove race markers immediately after a major race. Anything else is inexcusable.
Personally, I find it really annoying to see spray-painted arrows all over the trails after local Shore races (not NSMBA-sponsored ones).

The NSMBA toonie races that I participated in last year used ribbons as trail markers. Someone also swept the course immediately after the race to remove the ribbons and pick up anything left on the trail. (In a heated race, stuff gets accidentally dropped on the trail all the time.)
None of this spray paint garbage that I have to stare at every time I ride through parts of Bridle Path, Old Buck, and BP.

Not unless they have sprayable chalk.:???:
Regardless, I would prefer not to see any man-made markings left on the trail after a race. Especially ones that I have to stare at for weeks and weeks afterwards.

--You're totally right, that would be the best thing to do. However, I felt the need to lash out from my dark place of pain and anger. Many of the most colorful events in my life seem to flow from such reactions.

SORCA and the Test of Metal crew who organize the Gearjammer are usually anal about cleaning up after so that totally surprises me. I'd give them benefit of doubt till you've had a chance to ask why?
That dog poop story sounds great. Now I just have to catch one of the bastards that let's their animal shite on my front lawn and doesn't clean up afterwards...

Onk, onk
Ok I plead guilty. Some time dude when you brain is oxygen deprived it hard to think straight. I know during the Gear Jammer I dropped an empty Power Jel pack when I was trying to stuff it in my jersey. I usually tried to take my feeds around the volunteers or after the hike a bike parts so there was less of a problem with stuff being left behind.
I did see one volunteer picking stuff up off the trail while I was doing the course.
Anyhoo

I wouldn't blame it on racers - you can't expect them to stop and properly dispose of wrappers when they're racing. Its the organizers that ought to be responsible for clean up.
I was over by Lynn Canyon yesterday and noticed that, AGAIN, there are tons of leftover signs and tape and crap from the XC events up there. Seriously, WTF? If its still there after the weekend I'll pack it out... AGAIN
I'm tempted to tell the park people about this but I don't want to jeopardize people's fun. Eventually some grumpy hiker will though...

E-mail the organizers. The organizers are responsible for picking up after the races, and I'm sure they will listen to your concerns.
Whether it's a race, hike or ride in the woods, the rule is: PACK IN, PACK OUT.
Good on you for caring enough to pick up someone else's litter. The trails (not to mention our parks) would be PRISTINE if everyone took the time to do this.

i dont understand why someone couldn't just do a ride and pack it all out :???:

we just did trail maintenance and put up signs for the upcoming North Shore MTB Festival Enduro last week and today the arrows and trail markers are missing. those markers were there for an upcoming race August 21, not left behind from the school age series

Sorry, not me, I haven't been back - sounds like I'm not the only one who hates seeing crap
Why do markers need to be up more than 2 weeks ahead of time? I'm sorry that it has to be re-marked but lots of people hike around there and most would probably assume its forgotten garbage if it sits untouched week after week. You might be making extra work for yourself by putting them up so early on trails that some people are less than keen to share with bikes in the first place. Those trails have turned to crap since bikers 'discovered' them
