Matt Klymson, winner of the Santa Cruz Hell Ride (putting the Santa in Santa Cruz),

http://www.santacruzmtb.com/news/index.php?NewsID=0040

took his prize winnings onto the North Shore this weekend. Keeping with the spirit, we did a hellish North Shore ride - Deep Cove, Seymour/CBC, Neds over to Lynne Valley, Fromme/Seventh and back again.

Big Thanks to Peter & Cove Bike Shop for the "celebrity tune-up".

Here's the booty:

 That is pretty much my ideal Shore route. Wish I could find the time (and endurance) to do it.

What we lack in skills, we overcompensate for in endurance. D.

We're working up to that. Cypress is too far and a pain in the ass to get to offroad from Fromme. We'll leave it to the shuttle monkeys. Plus after about 60 km on a 40lb bike, my technical riding starts going to shit.

A good last-leg alternate is Burnaby Mtn. Good climbing, nice easy descents. Accessible via the x-canada trail, about a 40 km loop 90+% offroad. That would be a triple-triple-triple (triple-cubed? or cripple crown):

3 mountains, 10,000+ feet, 100+km.

We have the support (food/fluids) figured out. This was a dry run and went OK. Cooler weather will also help. D.

Basically Indian River road to the Baden Powell, where it meets the Old buck, and then back around under the power lines and back to the road. Its the less steep senic route. The Old Buck is more direct, but a steeper climb. Old buck and up the incline to corkscrew would be hard core. As far as I know, there are no rideable climbs offroad that will take you above about the 5 km mark (the lower parking lot) on the road. D.

Here's what the CBC/Seymour->7th/Fromme->Burnaby Mtn profile looks like (Burnaby Mtn is 2 loops - Nihino+Nicoles, 3 times up Cardiac):

Yes, it's a shame that there isn't some way to climb to the top of CBC or to the resort itself without using the road. Maybe some day.:)

An easy XC trail to the top would take some pressure off CBC and also move some bike traffic off the road.

Plus it would be perfect for a mid-winter XC climb-fest, as an alternative to getting run over by anxious boarders and skiers zipping up the mountain.
