If you do it right, it is great. Don't go the ghetto route.
Also, I my best recommendation is to get a BMX cog for the rear and use a BMX chain.
I went through about 3 chains before finally switching over to BMX and I haven't had one problem since.

BTW, single speed is great for trail riding. I'm running 32:20 because my bike weighs about 40 lbs and I have to climb every now and then. For park and more DHish riding, go with 32:16 or 32:18. It also depends on what size rims you're running. I'm running dual 26''.

If you don't have horizontal drop-outs, you'll have to get a chain tensioner.

thanks alot, yeah i dont have horizontals, my buddy actuallu just cut a derailler and use that as the tensioner, and the spacers were each, of the cassetes, and it works awesome.

use a 16 in the back and a 34 or 36 in the front

that would be murder with dual 26'' rims though, unless you do all of your riding downhill.

You have to factor in what size rims you're running. For dual 26'' rims, 32:16 is hella hard for trail riding, but not bad for park and DJs.

i run 36:18 with dual 24s.... Great for most stuff, I can just make it up hills... 43lb bike.

Its a bit hard on the shore, getting up skinny ramps and stuff if you don't already have speed.

I use 36/12 right now with a 24. Ive tried alot of ratios and decided that I like a really hard gear. I can climb and hills I could with gears I just have to stand up somtimes.

single speed is great. something like 36:16 is a great combo. I'm using 36:18 and I find I don't have a heavy enough gearing for faster riding, but it's great for park and street.

P.S. I run dual 26

I made my old XC bike a SS commuter
21lbs
Dual 26" running 36 / 18

I find I have to coast allot due to the fact that you can accelerate really well, but there is no top end speed. At least I can climb every hill that gets in the way.

i think myine is 36 and 16, its the second gear and 6th gear in the back, i just got it done today, but its skipping off hte back, so i might sandwich the link in between two larger rings? any other ideas? it also seems to be coming off on the pulley, is that cuz its bouncing around off the ring??

thanks

36/16 isnt bad for trails...not the best for riding up hill, but if he is into jumping and big gaps...he will have a hell of a time getting enough speed if he used 32/16 or 32/18..my buddy rides 32/16 and it is way too easy to max out his cranks

as for putting single speed on a sasquatch, you may be in for a bunch of long term problems with the tensioners becuase they work great at first then they give and skip all the time...several if my friends ride them and they are all having the same problem

make sure you chain line is straight...i would seriously suggest breaking the cog apart, taking the gear you want (or buy an actual bmx 16 tooth), buying a hand full of spacers, and playing with it till you find a straight chain line
