Hey guys newbie here,

I'm lookin at getting a bike and will probably do most of my riding at the watershed then maybe do some travelling up to whister and maybe the shore depending on how i progress.

I'm probably gonna be asking my buddy to help me out with this because he's damn good and an upcomer in the scene, actually i think he's on the nsmb freeride team, plus he'll be teachin me how to ride again, so I just need some help to get an idea of what types of bikes to be looking at so i have a narrowed search when i talk to my buddy (newman :) )

Thanks

nah definetly not, thats more along the lines of what i would consider an "expert" bike. Plus it's way out of my price range, i would be buying things i wouldn't be taking enough advantage of for it to be a good buy.

my price cap is $1000....quality/price ratio is a big factor

also, i want my first to be a hardtail

Make your Price cap $1500, youll get ALOT more bike for the extra $500. Even a $1300 will have significantly better parts than a $900 bike.

The Norco shore hardtails offer good parts, but the frames are pretty average and leave a bit more to be desired. A great beginner bike, but you will be upgrading to a better frame in the long run for sure.

I think that one of the best shore type hardtails right now is the Devinci Hucker, it has an amazing parts spec for the price, and the frame is pretty much top quality. Devinci is doing all of the welds for the EVIL frames this year...That speaks volumes of their quality.

Another option would be to buy used. There are some awesome deals on used bikes out there, if you know what to look for you can avoid getting a lemon.

If you need to stay under $1000 look into the Giant STP2. ISIS cranks, beefy frame, decent wheels and rides great. Slap on a bigger fork and some discs on in the future and your done.

04 Norco Manik is priced at (I believe) $1,299 at Caps Richmond. A little bit over your $1000 price range but I think it'll be worth it. Has some pretty decent parts on it and a solid frame.

I always recommend 'used'. Lotsa bang for your buck but you gotta have a buddy who knows bikes tag along.

Thanks for the replies guys, keep em coming ;)

So even for a beginner/intermediate rider you still think its good to shell out the extra cash eh? will i be buying to much for me to handle or just give me lots of room to grow on? (skill wise)

i checked out the devinci hucker like u recommended and wow it looks like a very solid bike, i was impressed.

I'll look at the other suggestions you guys have given me thanks a lot

I would suggest something from the norco line. They tend to have the most bang for the buck! But as said, for around $1000, you should get a nice hardtail. Any new dually for around $1000 won't last long at all

For sure that extra few $100 will go a very long way if you can afford it.

Today, a $1200 bike is IMO usually where your starting to get into the good stuff, hydro discs, decent suspension, beefy wheels, etc etc.

The bikes you wrote in your first post are more xc/enduro style bikes which may be fine.. But if your planning on going to whistler once in a while youll want somthing a little more and will have much less chance of any mechanical problems.

$1200 seems like alot now, but once you get involved with the sport youll see why people spend the huge bucks on their rigs. Id also suggest to go check out some shops and listen to what they say... Good luck with the bike purchase (I love shopping for bikes..).

Thanks for the advice Smoe, I appreciate it!

I'll probably be checking out some bikes really soon, some local ones by the shed and probably the steveston bike shop...hopefully newman can cut me a deal ;)

That Devinci hucker looks mighty tempting for now, but i'll look around and see what fits me the most!

Its a cheap double clamp fork. Still not bad though, rode a bit on a guy's stinky and it wasn't too bad...though for a double crown, they should have made it QR20. I still think the Manik at Caps is a good way to go, hell its pretty much the same price as a Sasquatch now that its on sale. If you can pick up the Devinci Hucker for a good price that would also be sweet...very solid bikes.

BTW I agree with Shmoe's post regarding spending the extra few $100 on a better bike so that it will last you in the long run.:)

Damn just checking out the Manik and Sasquatch...both look like killer bikes, anyone got any input on how they stack up against the devinci hucker?!?!

Faithless
07-26-2004, 03:04 PM
hucker is more expensive, but has the better parts, (wheels and stuff like that)

i ride a sasquatch, it was fine, but i wish i put in the extra 100-200 dollars and got something a little better buiklt.

Faithless

actually if caps has the manik for sale at the price go for it, it is definately a built bike.

I got a totally xc bike to start. Now that I think about it, I could've gotten a really good used bike, but I didn't know anything about bikes. I'm happy with what I have, but I'm growing out of it real, real quick
