My rear XT deraileur finally took its last breath last weekend, and I am now trying to get my 9ball ready for the weekly Whistler trip. Last weekend I met a guy on the lift who said I should look into a road deraileur. Claiming they are cheaper and stronger. Is there any truth to this?

Either way I am looking for a sturdy set up, and I am a bit tempted to replace my shifter, cassette and chain while I am at it? They have all seen better days :D

- Sram vs. Shimano? (Bring it on IFO!)
- 9 vs. 8 speed?
- twister vs. trigger shifter?
- what $$ am I looking at?
- where can I get it tomorrow?

Well I've been running a shimano 105 road derailleur on my bullit for the last year and it's been solid. The only problem I had was that the P-tension spring came loose a couple of times at whistler, I remedied this by replacing it with the P-tension spring from a trashed XT derailleur I had lying around. The thing with road derailleurs is that you're limited with what cassette you can run. My 105 for example is limited to a 27 tooth large cog, I've found that on my mountain cassette is reaches 2nd gear (28 teeth) just fine but that 1st gear (32 teeth) causes some grinding so I had to lock it out.

On another note I just ordered a Sram X.7 drivetrain to convert my single speed hardtail. I've been an 8 speed hold out for a long time but I really wanted to try out the new Sram stuff, so I'm goig to be going to be on 9 speed for the first time. I'll have to see how it holds up by comparison.
The total for everything (shifters, rear derailleur, chain, cassette) was about $230 including tax and shipping from bikeroom. Seems pretty reasonable to me. I shall report on how the X.7 performs once I have some miles on it.

- Sram x9 Deraileur
- 9 Speed
- Whatever your preference
- good question...but cheaper than Shimano I think.
- Steed Cycles

SRAM makes awesome stuff. you install it and it shifts...no mucking around...no ghost shifting.

The X9 series is mroe robust than the X0 series. If you have the bling no questions asked, the XO is your bet...if not the X9 is super strong and works day in day out. ( I thrashed mine and it still works).

Running Dura Ace on mine. 11-34 cassette, no problem with big ring on my set up. I run a small 34 tooth front ring though.
Call/ demo Dan's bike at On Top to find out details on Dura Ace set up.
THough can only run single ring w' the road derr, doesn't have enough chainwrap to take up the slack of a granny.

I recently picked up SRAM X.7 trigger shifters and an X.9 rear derailleur ($50 for the shifters and $70 for the derailleur, from scrounging on eBay and Ridemonkey), but have yet to install them onto my bike. I'm waiting until my LX derailleur gets completely thrashed (it's about 25% of the way there).

I got the SRAM stuff after hearing all the raved reviews about the trigger shifters and X-series derailleurs. Plus, I wasn't sure when my current drivetrain was going to crap out, so I figured I'd get the SRAM stuff so that I'd have the new stuff all ready to go when the old stuff gives out.

Cool thanks folks! I am calling JH and Steed tomorrow.

Is there any performance difference between the normal and medium cage x.9 deraileurs? Seems like a shorter cage would be sturdier...

I cant see why anyone runs 9 speed that. such a thin tiny chain. If i had to choose 8 speed would be my choice
