View Full Version : Ultimate new rig...

I will soon be in the market for a new fs rig, maybe by the end of the season.
Fortunatley, money is not really an issue, so price isnt a large concern
Most of my riding is done at large ski resorts with lift access, mostly on the east coast usa. but i will take some roadtrips up to b.c. to hit whistler and the like.
i'm basically looking for a downhill bike, with some freeride to it. i doesnt have to pedal like a goat but i'm mainly looking at the better pedalling downhill bikes.
i had in mind...05 v10, dhs-mono, dare, and the like
for suspension i'm not sure, maybe an avalanche shock, i hear good things about them. and maybe an 888 up front.
what do you all recommend for a build?
thanks a lot

Clifcat or BMW
NooNer

dhs mono all the way. holy fuck those are sick bikes ... avy or curnutt in the back and you will defefinatly not be disappointed. i got a curnutt on the back of my bike matched to a 888 up front and its a very very nice progressive yet forgiving suspention set up.
most importantly, it sounds like you are going to be dropping a nice bit of change for the new rig, so find the exact bikes you want and test them out. either way with the rigs you are looking at i cant see you being disappointed in any way.

HMMMMMM... well Dorado's come to mind when you say DH, as for the frame, I'd say... Canfield F1... Riding Buddy just got one of the Proto's and according to the rest of the gang it's so damn plush you couldn't belive it...hard to manual but seriously plush, I bet they carry speed really well eh. Turner DHR, V10, Demo9 all also come to mind, all with either Avvy's allaround, or Dorado/fifth combo's...mmmmm squishy

If money is not an issue buy them all, then ride them all, then find which one you like, then let us have the ones you didn't like :agree:
im sorry i know nothing about expensive bikes.
Demo9 or a DHS mono are both total PIMP machines...
u cant go wrong on either...
i think the DHS mono/curnuttt wins for outright pimpage thou...

vpp tech is the bomb. m3, v10, or vp-free. no other frames can compare, except maybe a dare
Look at cliffcat, sounds like they'll tailor a bike to your needs for the right price. Def. go with an avy shock it's soooo nice.

Demo 9 does look fat and seems right up your alley. I'd rather pedal that than a full on DH rig and you still get 9" of plush travel. See if you can wait to try the 8" travel, sub 7 lb. Fox DH fork for whatever bike you end up w/.

demo 9, stab primo, m3 or even the new norco team dh..all with a 888 or dorado up front

If you got the bling, why not be one of the first to own an M3. An Intense I mean.
I'd recommend that or a BMW Race Link for pure unmatched pimpness with complete disregard for the bank account.

Also look at a Knolly frame since money is no concern. They're looking quite good these days. Should be knollybikes.com
edit: dont forget the new Nicolai's with the G-boxx setup :thepimp: just not sure of availability though.

who are you? :D (he's talking about my bike. (http://bb.nsmb.com/newforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=42004)) anyway, yeah, i'd add the canfield f1 to that list. all of the bikes mentioned are surely nice, but they also ride very differently, so it really is important that you ride them if you don't know what characteristics you're after. the canfield is a long frame with a low bb and low center of gravity. with the avalanche it bobs a small bit, less with a swinger, but the avy gives it a wonderfully supple feel.

If you don't want the big weight and bulkiness of those other bikes, consider the Giant DH Team, sweet rides, super plush with either avy or swinger 6, and the new 05 blue dorado or a blue x-works would just sweeten the package, also uber cheap so you could stock that thing up on parts galore!

hey guys, thanks again for all the input.
i think i will most likely stick with companies i know like specialized, santa cruz, foes, and intense.
those are the ones that would be easier to get a test ride and i think i will be happy with pretty much any of them.
super stoked to start testing em out

if you could get your hands on an M3, that would be insane! But if you're looking for something more common, go for a v10, demo9, or even a foes mono.

took a run on whistler with a friends bike. I liked shivers better for some reason, maybe cause I was used to it when riding his bike before. Don't get me wrong 888r's are fine, but there was just something off when i rode them. Should have been clearer. Sorry

Im a firm believer in the new Devinci DH bikes for the price you pay. Though If I could Pimp out any bike on the market right now for DH and freeride it would be either a Nicolai Lambda or a Turner DHR. Both would have Dorados or The New Fox DH fork and Risse or Swinger Rear shocks.
Im not really into the whole BMW, Canfield, Karpiel type of bikes...

another quesion kinda...out of all the bikes you guys have posted what do you think is the overall best for being a good pedaller, not overkill on the weight, and importantly; can jump well?

For the sheer cost of it all, I'd just buy a Norco Team DH...pure sex, that frame is so damn sweet looking, and it's a VPS so it's a decent pedaler for a bike of that travel...

if money is no issue, just get a bmw.. comes with an avvy in the rear and then put an avvy front fork or the curnutt front fork on there. Thats your bike if money is no issue... plan on $7k tho

bmw's...seem kinda like tanks. anyone have any time on one to know how they ride, i would think they are plush, and descend like a champ, but are they too heavy for some riding other than full on dh, no climbing. but jumps etc

Put one of them Dorados on the front of that, and you'd have a bicycle.

So why exactly do you have to go out and buy the MOST EXPENSIVE flashy bike? I realize it's fun, and I guess if you're loaded that's your deal, but why not buy a great bike like the Team DH, slap an MRD dorado on it and get the cockpit all squared away to your tastes and then just save some of that dough you could have wasted buying the most expensive TOY you could find... By all means, get the bike that feels the best to you, but don't let cost drive you towards something...
My nod goes to the Norco Team DH, great gobs of standover, VPS rear end, plenty of travel for whatever you could want to do, damn sexy looking, just a great bike IMO, plus it's not nearly as expensive as all the bikes we've been listing eh.
Save some cash and go bonkers with the friends for a week at Whistler with the savings.

Painting_of_Rebelion, that is pretty much the plan. i'm just looking at whats out there overall. in the end i'm sure i will get something thats not outrageously priced or fancy.
as for the norco, its an option...i'm not a fan of the look of it. but i'll have to test it out.

yeah man, I wasn't baggin on you for looking at high end bikes, it just seemed like when you said "Ultimate rig" everyone assumed you meant the most expensive one you could find... Hope your searches lead you to your dream bike whatever it may be, when money's not really an issue, you can afford to be picky eh. ;)
Yeah, the Norco takes a while to get used to the looks, but man all that standover is killer, and it's got a really low center of mass too eh...
cheers

Demo 9... hands down. I've ridden almost every domestic design out there and this bike is an eye opener. I'm ready to sell my rm7 wade simmons, and my soul for one of these... that is if the wife lets me.
This bike seemed to be at home in almost any condition, whether it was jumps/gaps to high speed DH to skinnies. It was simply short of orgasmic.
