i'm thinking about building up an HT for shore/trail riding primarily. it may see a little xc and urban/park, but not much....
i'm not sure what's the best option:
1) I have a brand new DJ3 and some parts, and I want to build up a shore worthy HT. to do this I would need:
- frame $200-400?, used, steel for sure.
- wheels - $150-300?
- cranks /bb- $200-300?
- avid mech disks from bikeroom (cheap)
- bar/stem/cassette/rings/shifters/derailleurs/seat/tires should be covered, what else am I forgetting?
- misc junk + ODI lock-ons $100-200
2) save up and buy new HT.
i would love to buy a whole new bike, some of the parts aren't that great. plus if building a bike up is going to cost $1000-1500, for another $500-1000 I could pick up a brand new bike with as-good or better spec... ?

Frame id go for a .243, DMR, id get a aluminum though more options esspecially if your geting a used or cheap bike. For wheels id get a single track to shimano xt wheelset, http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product.aspx?i=WH707A22 cranks and bb if you want steel id get poverty bmx cranks they come iwth a euro bb. Those can be bought at http://danscomp.com/ If you want aluminum id get raceface evolve dhs and truvative gigapipe bb.
as for frame, you can get an Azonic Steelhead frame for $265 from bikeroom

Statix,
I just dragged the set up below (check sig) out from Vancouver to try and flog it in Calgary. I could be tempted to drag it back to Vancouver...

How did you come about that DJ3? If you took it off a new bike, I would consider selling it, and paying a little more for a better trail performing fork. If you bought it aftermarket, go get a refund on it. Try to find a good deal on a Sherman or a Z1, perhaps. You'll be much more satisfied with one of those over the DJ3.
As for building up the bike or buying it complete, you'll probably have a hard time finding a steel shore HT in any of the lineups from the big manufacturers, so building it would be a more feasable option if you have to ride steel. If you're willing to ride aluminum, I'd recommend a Devinci Hucker (although you'd probably still want to swap the DJ3 for something better). I have mine set up with a Z1 and it rides very nicely.

this bike will be pedalled uphill and occasional xc-style. i'm 5'11" so I think I would need one of the no-longer-made 15" .243s?
so that's another requirement: the seat angle can't be all dj style where when you raise the seat up you're way over the back wheel...

the dj3 was warrantied for crown cracks and while waiting I got a sherman, so it's not new, but does have uncut steerer and new stantions.
i agree with you, i would definitely perfer a sherman over the dj3, but i'm trying to save a little money. dj3's are dime a dozen, i'd be lucky to get $200 for it probably...

thanks for the link ruff. that's a sweet price, but I'm thinking that frame is a little small for any serious uphill pedalling??
---
you guys are right, i probably should consider Alu. :)
so, 16-18" frame, with decently steep seat angle for pedalling uphill. kind of an all-round HT.
the Rocky flow seems like the right style of frame, but it's Alu (maybe I can live with this. I should have bought pete's :( ).
i'm not really to sure what else is out there??

JH has some decent priced Brodies right now.
I like the geometry of the norcos plus you can get them used cheap. slack head angle steep seat angle. Let me know what you need I have a few parts kicking around.

Build it up, of course. Way more fun that way and your bike will have more personality than something that came out of a catalog.
If you want a solid aluminum frame, send a PM to Switch as he was thinking of selling his unfinished silver frame. (I forget what brand it was.) He will give you a good price and it's your size--17" I think.
At bare minimum, build up the wheels yourself--far better than a set of machine-trued wheels.:thepimp:
unless you arer looking for a brand new ht, i got an oryx dd 04 frame with shivers, gears and brake for faily cheap
