View Full Version : Did you like Garbonzo?

Personally I thought it was good for maybe the first 10 minutes of riding then I got bored. It was way too long but I liked how technical it was. Still there were a lot of n00bs riding it. We continuously passed groups of like 10 riders. I dont think I will be doing it much. I can ride that type of stuff where I live but I cant ride A line or Dirt Merchant here haha.
Did you like it?

I loved thoughs trails I couldn't get enough of them. I don't know why you guys say it’s boring. I think you should give it another chance and take the bigger lines. The first 2 times down me and my buddies missed some narly stuff but after you check everything out and hit all that stuff to get some flow going, its way to much fun. I'm not saying its really really hard or anything I'm just saying its a blast to ride.
i only rode no joke... and hit all the stuff... but i heard the other trail had alot more stuff on it... so i cant really say i guess

Just compared to everything else on the mountain, I would perfer the lower stuff. It was interesting but Im not going to be going up there much. I cleaned everything on the way I went down and I didnt find it too challenging. I just get more kicks out of speed:)
ps. First one down A line today:)

I rode it last year and loved it, aline can get boring if u do it over and over again, i like technical trails and love the loamy single track up there, and the big step up and hip are tight as hell.

I thought this was gonna be a 'I love Garbanzo so much I'd give it head' thread. I'm surprised. We rode it Friday and had a great time - next time I go I'll probably do full runs all day.
Its cool that there's all the soft shit right now, it won't be like that for very long. And there may not be big tables but there are tons of small hits that good riders can style off. Reminded me of Cypress on a dry day. Much more like real mountain biking

Rode Garbonzo twice today... man is it long. First run was Original Sin --> Goat's Gully --> In Deep. Lots of steep roll downs and very tight single track. Lacking in the huck department. Almost all of it was natural. My buddy pinch flatted 3/4 of the way down poor fella. I liked it, but it felt kinda long towards the end. A fast rip down Dirt Merchant after felt really nice :D
2nd trail was No Joke. This is a much better trail. Still the same characteristics as above, but felt much more flowy. It had some step ups and some cool hits, a creek gap, and on the lower part, a COOL slow rolldown off this bigass rock with a wooden roll out. The rock was almost vert for like 4 feet, kinda crazy. A small huck at the end of the rollout finished it off nicely. It eventually links up with A-Line for a nice speedy route down the rest of the hill. A long ride, but lots of fun... i'll definately be hittin' this more this summer... i snapped and bought a pass today w00t!
The trails are brand new, so the dirt is super loose, and still some small stumps and lots of roots stickin' out... sending you along the trail.
Even though they were only running the chairs at under half capacity (3 bikes per carrier, and only every fourth chair has a carrier) there were no lineups to be had today :thepimp:

If I did pass you, I was on a black BB7 and most likely said thanx when I passed:)
I rode top to bottom all day. It was nice to have some technical riding at whistler. It's the only reason that I'd go back next weekend. The lower mountain was getting pretty boring. You can't really get out of control, and I can ride a-line in my sleep. The upper mountain was fast singletrack, steep in sections and nice and chundery. You really have to work to go fast and keep it under control. And that big rock wall ride...

I loved it.
It's nice to have real "mountain" feeling trail to ride in addition to the uber fun jumps on the lower mountain.
I found it changes my day there significantly. For some reason I feel less rushed to get in my quota of Dirt Merchant runs! The top trails are long, pretty tight in some spots, and tiring. I really enjoyed them. WBP did a great job in plotting the lines and building the new stuff. I'm all over it!
It really doesn't get any better than lift accessed 30 minute downhills!
Kicks the hell out of you physically compared to sessioning A-Line.

SOOOOO good. I loved the new expansion. True mountain biking descents. The bottom stuff is fun with the jumps and all, but the top is what mountain biking is all about for me.
Really well built too...lots of traversing the hill which makes for a much more interesting trail. There are lots of points where you can just pump and flow through the roots and trees without pedalling or braking...very nice! When you pop over the top on the chairlift, it's like a whole different world with the alpine flora, deer standing under the lift, the peak ahead...

It’s actually MOUNTAIN BIKING!
‘banzo was super sweet!! Hooking up flowy super long tech lines is so much fun and physically challenging… not to mention when you’re up there – you’re up there, I mean you’re actually up the mountain. I’m all over the fact I can all but avoid the gong-show of the lower-mountain and base area. Ripe it top to bottom and the break of standing in the lift line is somewhat bearable.
Kids this is just step 1… I look at the Garbanzo expansion as being like the lower was back in the day… Whistler continues to step it up and I just can’t wait to see how they continue to develop the mountain for both the summer and winter!

I'll be up there for the first time this year over the weekend and am very interested in trying the new runs out. I'm not an A-Line fan so it will be nice to see some more technical trails in the bike park.
How steep are the new trails? I still don't have a 24" rear wheel built up for my Imperial. I want to try it out in the bike park at least once. Otherwise, I'll have a Knolly V-Tach at my disposal (thanks Noel).

just couldn't get the flow on No Joke...as a result I would miss a lot of the natural elements that could be huge fun on this trail...Original Sin was a hoot. Very techical and I love the rock faces, the stepups and wall ride. I was exhausted after one go and I hadn;t even gotten back down to Fitz yet. Once it packs up a little it will be great and will flow better. Right now it rides like any new unpacked trail where you can see how it might flow nicely but you just can't get it happening because its still not buffed in yet.

The fact that most people on this board love the Whistler park, but for completely different reasons, speaks volumns about the park itself. I'd rather rides 'real' (IMO) style trails like what Garbanzo has, but there are also countless riders reading this who prefer doing speed laps on A Line/DM. Hey - do what you want.
Maybe it breaks down to where you're from. Maybe Whistler riders view the park differently than those who drive here. We view it as one of our local riding options, and the fact that there is a lift (or 2) to take you to the top is all the better. It seems (and what the hell do I know?) like most of the Van riders come here for something they can't get on the North Shore - speed runs and table after table.
Personally, I can't wait to get up to ride Garbanzo again.

it's almost akin to the snowboard park where in the winter you have all the air monkey's coralled in one area.
Hopefully garbonzo will keep the monkey's low and the techie riders high.

I only did one run up there so far. Had a good run with a dude on a Foes Fly that had recently recovered from pneumonia.
I rode Original Sin, but like a goober, I skipped the middle trail 'cause I figured, "uh oh, double black, may be a little too badass for me." Personal highlight for me was the back board and neck brace stashed in the bush next to this really steep roll on In Deep. Thanks Whistler, for giving me loads of confidence! Hint: go left on that roll. ;)
I'm really stoked on the expansion, and can't wait to check out No Joke. I'll definitely be spending plenty of time up there.

i think it's great that this ain't a-line top to bottom. garbanzo expansion is so nice. great loooooong descents (anyone complaining it's too long just doesn't get it), fantastic scenery, and you are way up there. frankly the lower mountain was getting dull - same trails over and over - going for garbanzo round two this weekend - will rock!

old school trails, not really what I go to whistler for. I'm not an a-line hoe but I like to go faster. I still did 3 runs up there though, all the natural rock was cool, especially the one roll over which is interesting when you just drop it, and the wallride. The trails up top were fairly rough on my 4by4. Anyone know if theyre still gonna be workin on the 4 cross area this monday (it was closed last monday).

I tend to agree actually when I go to whistler Im kind of in the dirt merchant / a line groove. I enjoyed up top and in the future will hit it a couple times each day, but my picture of going the distance to get to whistler and all involves the air time.
No dissing in effect.

So I finally Garbonzo today and it was very interestig. I can now see both sides of the argument very well. I first rode no Joke on my hard tail earlyer on and it was preaty cool, a good mix of tech and non tech stuff. Liked the soft loam. Then in the late afternoon after I busted my bike (flat spot on the rear rim resulting in 2 flats on 2 runs and then my old school fork is dead again) and my buddy let me borrow his stinky (props to Kurt Mclaws, i swear that kid spends more time in the air with his feet off his pedals than on) and I hit up the other trails. Thank the biking gods that I didn't try Origonal Sin on my hardtail cause it would have been death. I found both to be extreamly long with i didn't mind much but I also see how peeps don't like it and just a ball to mess around on but also with the required amount of lower mountain ripping.
