Ullrich wins Tour of Switzerland
Ullrich who started the Tour of Switzerland as part of his preparation for the Tour de France, confirmed his increasing good form by winning this nine-stage race. For many, including himself, he was perhaps not more than a surprising winner of the first stage, but he managed to ride several days in the leaders jersey on his TCR Composite. He only lost the golden leaders jersey to Manual Jekel on Friday. Sunday morning Ullrich started in second overall 41 seconds behind the leaders jersey. But in the final time trial he managed to gain just over 41.
"I had hopes for the time trial and was aiming for the victory, but with the strong wind I was not sure if I could win back 41 seconds on the general classification," said Ullrich who rode the Giant Time Trail Composite machine.
But in the final kilometers Jekel faded and Ullrich could hardly believe his luck. "It is unbelieveable" shouted the winner who confirmed that his Tour de France preparations are going well. Last year Ullrich was 7th in the Tour of Switzerland.
T-Mobile Team colleagues Daniele Nardello finished the time trial in tenth position and Santiago Botero finished in 11th position. In the general classification T-Mobile team mate Giuseppe Guerini finsihed in 8th position.
