View Full Version : What is it about Seymour and car thieves??

Well, another trip to Seymour and once again my car gets broken into:mad: First two times nothing stolen just damage to door locks. This morning me, and a couple of biking bros. decide to hit it up early (7a.m.) Parked at the lot above CBC. Early morning thief mother s.o.b. took my cell phone. I leave nothing in plain view. Phone was in glove box. I am only glad that he didn't let my 13yr old 90% deaf dog out. Wife would have killed me for sure:P Anyways I guess that if you're up there just don't leave ANYTHING in your vehicle:rolleyes: Also thinkin' of just stayin' on Cypress. (Trail Nazi dosen't steal shit:D ) Thanks for letting me rage.

Whenever I park my car on the mtns I leave nothing in sight AND I leave the glove box open and empty. It's a good way to tell thieves there's nothing in your car.

Any idea on "why" someone would steal a cell phone?? I mean that EVERY number called is on my statement. Dosen't sound too hard to catch somebody using it for anything?? Maybe somebody had to call Dad today and needed a phone:(

that really sucks. i always figure that if someone steals something.. they probably needed it more than me. but i know it's still crappy especially when they steal something that makes no sense.
was your car locked though? with the windows rolled up? with the dog in it? i know it was early but dogs still need air.

Two things I can't understand anyone leaving in their car when they ride - their phone and their dog.
Anyway - Seymour is thief bait. All kinds of folks who spend thousands on bikes park them and leave them for several hours at a time...turn the question around and ask "why are people still leaving stuff in their car when they park at Seymour?" Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for you, but this has been happening for years, and will continue to happen as long as people leave stuff in their cars that can be stolen.

There are meth-heads working the lots at Seymour. It sucks, but it is happening a lot.
I don't think time of day matters to them, they don't seem to keep the same business hours as regular folks.
A bait car needs to be set up...and watched by a few eager beavers. It is more than likely the same 2-3 losers doing this every time.
It is disgusting what drugs do to society. Pretty sad when you have to even think about your car getting broken into for a handful of change when you are parked at a recreation area in a relatively high income, low crime area. The drug-related crimes are spreading their wings beyond Vancouver and the slum areas in Surrey. Brutal!

I'm going to be riding in Van a bunch in July (visiting from northern California) and since I'm on a roadtrip I'll have lots of stuff in my car with no way to get rid of it. Do you think a car alarm will help? I'm thinking of getting one just for this trip.
Are there any places to park/areas to ride that are less prone to break-ins?
I guess I have to just take my chances and hope my renter's insurance comes through if anything gets ripped off!

Majin's comments are definitely uncalled for, but thoses types of comments are all too common on the NBR forum.

No.
But I do spend a lot more time on the Shore forum that I do in the NBR forum.
I can only call what I see....and if there is more of this in the NBR you could really help us by reporting it so we can deal with it. If nobody speaks up we are not going to be able to catch everything, because we are not on here 24/7 and we don't read anywhere near all of the threads.

You can do a lot better than that. Using the word "Asian" is not the issue, it's the implication that all "Asian" stores have something to do with unlocking phones.
By Majin's logic, you should be able to walk into your "Asian Market" and any other other "Asian" store if you need your phone unlocked.

Heres a trick to never getting your car broken into: just fill that bad boy with garbage! Candybar wrappers, empties, old undies, dip cans etc etc. I park anywhere and everywhere and Ive never been broken into! Works like a charm. I guess potential thieves just wont bother breaking into a garbage scow...
The downside is that sometimes even I dont want to get into my car. Girls run away screaming too:(

First off,
The parking fees go into a large pool and are dispersed around the province to maintain a standard throughout all BC parks. This covers things like cutting grass, signage, trail upkeep, rangers, administration, outhouses, paying PFO contracts, etc. It is basically a user pay system that provides similar amenities that were provided before pay parking. This means that even the tourist from europe who parks in a provincal park is paying to keep it pretty. Not so bad,eh?
There were lots of break ins before pay parking too. This is not a BC Parks issue, its is society's problem.Unfortunately, parking your car in a quiet, remote location invites the possibility of a break in.That sucks. The PFO operators in the park try to offer some visibility, but they are not there to protect your car while you ride. They are the ones who keep your outhouses clean, mow the grass and pick up all the garbage left in the lots by us bikers,so dont bitch to them, thank them.
The North Van RCMP are the people to talk to.They dont mind driving up now and then to show their presence, just let them know that there is a problem.REPORT ALL BREAK INs.After that just dont speed on the mountain road;)
About the asian store thing, give the kid a break.Thats what these type of shops are typically refered to as in his neck of the woods. These are the shops with a million cell covers, phones and all the gimmicky little thing that are imported from Japan,Hong Kong and other places in that part of the world. Some people write the same as they talk.
And no Corey, she probably cant program a cell phone.Just like me being a white Canadian man from a small town doesnt make me a red neck.
Well, maybe just a bit!:)

im pretty sure i saw the people that broke into the cars last year and got a pretty good description. after seeing the same people again a month or so later i reported it to the north van RCMP. the feeling i got from the conversation from the cop was that they knew who it was already or at least had an idea because i felt like the cop was just going through the motion taking the info i had and writing it down.

IIRC the fees for parking did not go back into the trails what so ever. this came up last year and people started to leave their paid parking passes for others to use because of the lack of funding that went back to the trails.
if that was inaccurate information, so be it.
now if the money goes into all the parks the same way, thats great. but this is a known issue and a known prowler area. if you are to call the police and state that someone is doing this in your neighborhood repeatidly, a cop would steak it out. why should a place you have to pay to park on public land be different? IMO its bad publicity to charge someone to use a parking spot and not provide them any security.
paying to use something shows that the payee claims a form of ownership over said something and they should hold a level of responsibility over it - EG supplying a form of security....how much would it cost to patrol the freakin lots every so often, and leave a guard there on busy weekends?

Just to add to this thread, the PFO (parks facility operator) manager actually pinned a car thiefs van with his work truck last year at Vancouver picnic area, but they got away.He followed them into town, all the while giving plate numbers to his dispatch and descriptions of the van and occupants.Pretty damn good security if you ask me.

Everyone here bitches about how the cops don't care when your bike gets stolen. This isn't limited to bikes. My neighbour was a cop and she said that they have 45min or so to report to home alarms. She laughed when I had told her that we had an alarm in our house.
My truck was stolen 3 weeks ago and the cops wouldn't even talk to me. I had to call a special number and speak to a clerk who simply enters my info into a computer. I haven't heard from them since.
I guess the cops have better things to do. Well, I hope they do.

So lets say BC Parks decides that the day use areas on the northshore need security.Now the math;
Seymour:6 parking lots so lets say 2 employees at 12/hr 8 hr days=$192.00 per day
=$70680.00 per year
Lease on a truck=3600.00 roughly
fuel,filling up 2 times a week=$2000.00
So just to cover the basic expenses of protecting your car full of crap that you should have left at home anyways=
$76280.00
Seeing as seymour gets about 50,000 bike visitors a year, how do we feel about adding about $1.75 on top of the current parking fee? :???:

Yeah but that's one trail of many and it's not a biking only trail. Remember all the other trails that used to be inside the parks boundary that we aren't allowed to ride anymore?

Ya, I know about those trails.
As far as I know there aren't any "biking only" trails on any of the mountains, I've seen trails runners and hikers on most.
I thought part of Corkscrew is in the park too?
Actually there are others as well, but they aren't the interesting ones: Baden Powell, Bridle Path, Old Buck, the trail across from the Old Buck parking lot to corner.

I realize the parking fee is just another tax (aka user fee), and that a minuscule portion of the total fee actually goes to the trails that mountain bikers use.
I was just pointing out that mountain bikers are using Parks trails on Seymour.
Having better security in all of the parking lots would be a good thing. So far I've been lucky (hope this doesn't curse me). I do use a Club and remove the stereo face plate. I also try to be smart in where and how I park, eg. under a light on night rides and in the highest traffic portion of the lot.

Here's the best idea yet. Become a recognized trail builder and you get a Volunteer Parking pass from BC Parks to use while you are doing volunteer work. Seeing as I try and always make a point of fixing some little thing when I am on the trails I am always volunteering. :D
PS - It's for people that volunteer on a regular basis, ie at least one day per week, not once a year.

I did say user fee in one of my posts.
I wasn't complaining about the parking fees.
BC Parks has always had revenue as they have charged for camping since at least the '70s. I'd imagine that the $10/night camping fees back then didn't cover all of the expenses though.
Seymour park does seem to be considering mtn bikers now as they funded the new Empress trail when they didn't have to.
One thing I do wish Parks would do is plow the snow out of the parking lots IF they are going to leave the gates open. With the snow and ice in those lots it is only a matter of time before someone slides down the hill from the picnic area into traffic.
