View Full Version : Can old tubes and tires be recycled?

So I've been cleaning out my shop and I've got a bunch of old tires and tubes that, short of just throwing them in the garbage, I don't know what to do with.
I know that car tires are often recycled and made into a variety of things. I was wondering if the same thing is done with bike tires (and tubes). Does anyone know? What do shops do with all the garbage tires and tubes they generate? Is there anywhere I can take this stuff besides the landfill?

Pedro's takes tubes and I believe tires. They make pouches and underseat and frame bags with them

cut em up throw them/nail them on a section of wood on a trail that gets slick in the rain where you need it...

Or donate them to Our Community Bikes on Main St. in Vancouver.

I don't think there is a recycling program for tires/tubes, at least in North Van.

The North Shore Recycling Program site has this to say about tires:

"Vehicle tires can be taken to the North Shore Transfer Station for disposal to a limit of 4 per day (these are NOT recycled). To ensure your tires are recycled, return them to your point of purchase, as tire dealers and auto mechanics often accept your old tires for recycling (check with them first). Call the BC Recycling Hotline at 604.732.9253 for details."

I wonder if a tire shop would take in your tires/tubes for recycling?

Cheap chainstay protectors! Cut one up, wrap 'em around your chainstay, zap strap and you're done!
