On the london drugs website the Gl2 is $3999 and the GL1 is $3799. is there any reason I shuold spend the exra $200 for the GL2?
Is there any difference between the 2 cameras besides one is newer then the other?

Do not spend that much on a GL1!!! There is a barely used one for $2500 on www.buysell.com in vancouver.

GL2 (http://www.canondv.com/gl2/s.html) has 380 000 effective pixels per chip
380 000 x 3 = 1 140 000 pixels ( native 4:3 ) 1/4" chips

GL1 (http://www.canondv.com/archive/gl1/s.html) has 250 000 effective pixels per chip
250 000 x 3 = 750 000 pixels ( native 4:3 ) 1/4" chips

XL1s (http://www.canondv.com/xl1s/s.html) has 250 000 effective pixels per chip
250 000 x 3 = 750 000 pixels ( native 4:3 ) 1/3" chips

340 000 x 3 = 1 020 000 pixels ( native 4:3 ) 1/3" chips

PD150 & PD170 (http://bssc.sel.sony.com/Professional/webapp/ModelInfo?m=0&sm=0&p=2&sp=11&id=71949) have 340 000 effective pixels per chip

PDx10 (http://bssc.sel.sony.com/Professional/webapp/ModelInfo?m=0&sm=0&p=2&sp=11&id=65263) has 1 070 000 effective pixels per chip
1 070 000 x 3 = 3 210 000 pixels ( native 16:9 ) 1/4.7" chips

TRV950 (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=M9lTJK-OYDBTdu81vjBZL-CCZ4USQMXKEp0=?ProductSKU=DCRTRV950&Dept=dcc&CategoryName=dcc_DICamcorders_MiniDVHandycamCamcor ders) has 1 070 000 effective pixels per chip
1 070 000 x 3 = 3 210 000 pixels ( native 4:3 ) 1/4.7" chips

Remember though, more pixels doesn't always mean better. For example the TRV950 (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=M9lTJK-OYDBTdu81vjBZL-CCZ4USQMXKEp0=?ProductSKU=DCRTRV950&Dept=dcc&CategoryName=dcc_DICamcorders_MiniDVHandycamCamcor ders) has 1 070 000 effective pixels per chip, but becacuse its chips are so small @ 1/4.7" it does not preform well in low light conditions.

Personally, I think you should go with the GL2. It's the right size to put in a back pack, so you can take it skiing/boarding. Its not crazy expensive >>> $3199 (http://www.dvshop.ca/camera/canonGL2.html).
If you can find a good deal on a GL1, less than $1200.oo; then go for it otherwise get the GL2.

Big Fish you think DVshop is a good trusted company to order off the internet?
there are so many out there its hard to tell but they look trusting to me.
What are there waranties like? Do they run them through them or canon? anyone know how it works?
anyone have experience getting something through this company?

DVshop.ca are a really cool bunch of people, I have done some stuff through them before and it was great service. The great thing about dvshop, is that their prices aren't set in stone. So you can do some hagling, and bring the price down a bit. When have close to enough money ( within $500 ), tell them how much you have. and that you need it by the end of the week. They will usually give you a deal.
Another idea, call up B&H and do some hagling with them to see if they will offer you a lower price, if so tell them you'll call back to them once you talk to your producer.
Then if you call dvshop, you have a lower price to use as leverage.
Don't worry too much about warranty. I'm pretty sure canon offers a standerd 1 year. And you can always buy an extend one within the first year through canon or any authorized canon retailer.
Of course because you're buying over the net, try and get a chance to test out a GL2 before you make up your mind.
I'm not sure if you have looked locally. You can try Matrix (http://www.matrixvideo.ca/) or Commercial Electronics (http://www.commercialelectronics.ca/) .
