Do i have to use the pink shimano stuff? or can you jsut use mineral oil from shoppersdrug mart or whatever

I dont really feel like spending 20 bucks on a little bottle of mineral oil....

I'd be really surprised if Shimano mineral oil were any different from any other mineral oil. It's just stuff with their name on it for you to buy.

Mineral oil is mineral oil. The Shimano stuff just has dye added. Buy it from any drug store and bleed away.

i think Shimano adds a few properties to thier mineral oil... but i know for a fact London drugs mineral oil works...

so i wouldn't sweat it using something other then Shimano brand fluid...

No Dangerous Dean has a good point here,
I just got off the phone with my bud the wrench who ran into probs with shimano's.A Guy brought him a bike with brakes that didnt work right after a bleed...which was done by another pretty good wrench who also doesnt know about different weigths of mineral oil

Phil sez there is heavy mineral oil which doesnt work properly

and a light mineral oil which is what you want... compare/check the viscosity of DOT brake fluid, its pretty runny

he sez there is some stuff that is used in Cannondale Codas' that also works

Oh, I bought heavy. But it seems to work.

I've used drug store mineral oil, shimano mineral oil and magura blood in xt hydros, and i gotta say magura and shimano are worth it. The drug store mineral oil is too high viscosity meaning it makes for shitty lever feel and it makes it very difficult to get a good bleed out of them. I bought a jug of magura blood for $8 and will never go back to the drugstore stuff. Right now I have shimano in the xt's on my dh bike and magura in the xt's on my hardtail. Also get resin lines for your xt's, it makes them alot better, not goodridge better, but still good.

Cut to length resin hoses. You need part no. SM-BH61 to replace your current braided lines.

not all mineral oil is the same. if you use anything other than what shimano specifies, if you run into trouble you'll void your warranty.

this being said, there is a difference between mineral oils. the one you get at the drug store is ingestable, whereas the pink stuff shimano supplies is industrial, and should not be pounded like a cold beer on a hot day.

if you are indeed stuck... then light is better than heavy... and sewing machine oil is better, and shimano oil is best.

Also, 5 weight finish line shock oil works too. Thats what Maguras sold in the US come with.

sure. i've also heard of people using 2.5wt fork oil. but again, if you use it you'll void your warranty should something fail and personally, i wouldn't want to even go there.
