nope, just select the whole picture (or whatever you want to call it;) ) and hit the level of sharpening you want. From 1 to 20. It finds the edges through some algorithm and selectively sharpens. Its really pretty cool.

I can't tell who is joking or not in this thread so I will probably come off as a total dick.

Using photoshop is just like using the darkroom, just in a different medium. You are talking out of your ass if you say that photoshop = death of photography. Go ask Sterling or whoever is your photo god how much they use photoshop when they are scanning their images. It is hard to explain to someone that is so ignorant and hard pressed on "original" photography. The darkroom is photoshop, photoshop is the darkroom, but on different scales.

With your argument everyone should be photographing with pinhole box cameras and silver sheet film from the 1900's.

Derek needs to keep posting rad photos and people like buck here need to realize that being an asshole on a public forum isn't going to make a shitload of difference.

I like the pictars very much. I take pictars as well. I use film in mine carara. I use a darkroam. I dodge and burn pictars. Plaese hit me also then. I want to take pictars as good as yors one day but i suck at darkroam. Any advise on little light pictars from other film peeps. like when i'm running things like 2.8 f-stop and 1/60 speed and no flash. do i shoot film at one iso up (200iso but shoot at 400 or 400 at 800) and push process it at the same speed or just buy the higher iso. both gets more grainy but which is better?? thanks

Actually by official standards Im pro now too. Im making a pretty regular income these days with it.


As far as the lighting, I used a strobe mounted at the top of the doorjamb and shot through a sheet that I folded over a few times to diffuse the light and tacked on either side of the door.

Then i put a flash on the floor and shot it through a 48 inch diffuser. I wanted to put a flash in the tub, but they put bubble bath in there forsome shots that we never got to because it was too late. We have another shoot scheduled tho :)

as for film vs. digital i think the film guys are threatened because any yoo-hoo with 5 grand can buy up the top gear and be just as good of a photographer or better because their success rates are dramatically higher.

film guys racked their brains for years to learn proper exposure metering, DOF, shutter speed, and flash control in a million different situations while any old joe with a digital point and shoot, TTL flash, all the bells and whistles can take basically the same picture and photoshop it all until its right

digital guys can gear up, come in right away, compete and saturate the industry. competition isnt a bad thing though! film guys arent at a complete disadvantage.

there will still be a niche for film. it will never go away.

think about it... colour "killed" black and white, colour negatives "killed" transparencies, prints "killed" paintings, motorcycles "killed" bicycles, internal combustion "killed" horse drawn carriages, video killed the radio star, and so on and so on!

digital is commercially viable.

film can be an even more exclusive club, which is what its looking like right now...

but guys like chump will always suck regardless

A couple of things:

1. Not any yoo-hoo can be just as good as a "film guy": Fancy digital cameras (and film cameras) with auto-exposure ability certainly help take better photos, but I've yet to see a fancy camera with auto-composure ability. When it comes down to it, if the photographer can't compose a shot, then $100,000 worth of gear isn't going to do much for them.

2. Guys like chump will always suck? Ouch. Harsh. Chump's taken a lot of decent shots IMO.

Im still trying to get used to the fact that beautiful women who are complete strangers are willing to take off thier clothes in front of my camera. Some of you slam everything Derek posts. Others slam everything <insert other photographer name here> posts. Lame, lame, lame! Time to grow up me thinks.

Like it or not, even film based photography is going digital. Pros who still shoot film, routinely scan the film, then edit and print digitally. Photoshop is the tool of choice and even if you don't use it, your magazine or book editor WILL before the image is posted or goes to print. Some form of digital processing is standard in almost every image production you can think of. It's here to stay. Get over it. Nobody wants to go back to the days of old dirty enlargers and make prints with dust, hair and scratches. To slam someone for using particular equipment or technology is lame. Especially when most of you doing the bitching don't know shit about photography in the first place and even less about the specifics of film and digital technologies.

Derek does some really good work.
I don't like everything he shoots, but I REALLY like some of it. I don’t give a shit if he shot them on the latest digital SLR or with a pinhole camera, some toilet paper and a sponge. What matters is how it looks and how it makes me feel when I see it.

Don't knock him for the tools he uses. They are just tools. A chef is not a good cook because of the frying pan he uses! Equipment can improve a shot, but first you must have an EYE and a VISION of what you can do. He does! Most of you would be hard pressed to do half of what Derek does with ten times the equipment.

So suck it up princess. If you think the competition on this board is tough, wait until you get a real photo job. You'll be forced to get past your jealously very quickly if you want to make it in life. You might as well start now.

just looked at some work shot using a phase one back on a hasselblad. spontenaity of 35mm and the detail of 8" x 10". a beauty shot you could zoom into and individual eyelashes wouldn't be pixelated. no film grain so the raw file once processed is the equivalent of a 100meg file. incredible, incredible quality with the ease of shooting of a 35mm slr.

i've been shooting since way before there were digital cameras, and i'm completely passionate about photography of all kinds. i love using film and i love being in the darkroom, and i also love what you can do with this stuff.

a camera is way way more than simply a recording device.
