so....
most of the youngin's wont even have a clue what i am talking about but was anyone else here for the good ol' days of the FIRST nsmb.com board. before all the snazzy Vb graphics, before the blue and gray, even before this format was around.
i know cam was here, but most of the other mods weren't. the good days of curtis and gandalf duelling it out on the internet.
who else was around for the very first board??? i feel old now

I have to disagree on that one. The board seems to allow for more intelligent discourse than it did a year and a half ago. And there seems to be more awareness regarding the NSMBA and trail maintenance.
On the other hand, the recent "My beef with the NS Ripper" thread was definitely one of the dumber threads I have seen on the Shore board.

this is true, however, NBR used to be of a much higher calibre - does no one remember the weekly debate threads? most of the posters on nbr now are pretty much 18 and under - boys complaining about their gf's? come ON people, no wonder members have left.
there used to be some really funny shit on there, not girls airing their grievances with their boyfriend

I'm not that old school, but that sounds right to me.
vBulletin was introduced to replace the old board. Then all the posts were wiped clean and the board structure was reorganized due to member abuse.

ha, I'm a newb.
I remember coming to the site and there was a page that said that the forums were down because members were too disrespectful towards each other.
I remember thinking 'who cares about a bulletin board, I just want to see the product reviews and the articles'. I figured it was just a bunch of nerds anyway...
I joined after they started up again though. There is a lot of information hidden in the pages. It's a good resource.

hoodlums were the rippers of the day and they got burned alot for just throwing up cheap stunts. Other than jeff, i don't think any of them ride anymore. I wrote one of the first reviews - for NWD 1. I also argued alot about progression. Look at the kids now and I think I am winning that argument...;) Rumour has it Romaniuk has something really big up his sleeve...

this is pretty rough summary more of a coles notes, no one cares anymore what really happend so no jumping on me for it.
proto was a user on the board, dunno if he is lurking here under a different name now, he had his bike on the ground at whistler near the gondola. watson came down and went to hop over it, clipped his wheel, no damage or anything done to my recollection. big incident ensued, lots of internet talking smack, chairlift taggings that garbage. basically a whole lot of shit was made out of nothing and it was really stupid. there was a whole boycott simbrio thing that was started and that kinda crap.
thats about it. was more of a joke that some people took it that seriously

This is exactly why I made that post. There have been a numer of times in the past where you have pissed off a lot of the board members with things you have said. Sometimes you have been clearly wrong and you haven't had the balls to step up and admit it. Now you want to come on here and play board police cop and give people the wagging finger for something they maybe should not have said. Give me a frickin break and take your hypocrisy somewhere else. You either need to play nice and apologize when needed or just be an asshole.

Hey bro, I'm not speaking for everyone and I didn't say that (I did say a lot of people tho) . I also do not claim to know everything that is going on. I will give you credit that you have made some insightful posts, but when you first started posting here (the 0_o identity anyway) you wrankled a lot of feathers. There were a few times where it would have been nice to see you saying sorry, or at least acknowledge that you pushed the envelope a bit too far. Because that did not happen I take issue with you criticizing other people for their actions.

Proto, you've always seemed like a nice enough guy, except around this incident.
And now, anyone that comments on it "wasn't there", and therefore can't comment. Okay, so we're missing some key piece of data. However, it seems only a select few will be privy to this information.
All I know is what I read on the boards, which was apparently not the whole truth. Yet, with what we were given, I'm inclined to side against you. It looks like a small incident that was blown out of proportion, and you're still touchy about it today. If there was more to this thing that was told publicly before, perhaps you'd care to enlighten the rest of us?
Or maybe you'd rather just sit back and insult everyone for "not understanding". Kinda hard to understand when the only guy who "was there" is keeping his mouth shut eh?
You said you'd love to start up a thread about this now that it's calmed down a bit. I say go for it. I want to hear the full story and why, in your opinion, this isn't a small incident that was blown out of proportion.
God knows the board could use some good discussion.

Fair enough, but here we are reminiscing, and people talk about their opinions on the subject, which are apparently uneducated. It's obviously your choice to not talk about it if you want, but people are free to form their opinions on what limited knowledge they have (although until you know what you don't know, you don't have any idea how limited or not you may be... for all we know, the detail you're omitting could be that the Longhorn was serving Sleemans at half price that day).

Well I thought about it, and came up with this: As I remember it, people got pissed off at you for blowing up at someone for a small incident. There was apparently more, but you don't want to shed light on that, so all we see/saw was someone blowing up at someone else over a minor thumping. Then people attack you for this seemingly over the top response, and recieve a seemingly over the top reply from you in return.
I mean... if the dude jerked it in your beer when you turned around or something, thats one thing. But all we see here is a whole lot of hellfire flying around a tire getting thumped. I have no doubt you have your reasons for what you did/said and what you're doing/saying now, but everyone here also has their reasons for thinking what they will as well. Without more information on what happened, I'm afraid everyone's right.
.glib,
I did not "blow up" over the incident.
I made one thread that was clear, concise, and free from vulgarity.
Lee Lau confirmed this on dropmachine.com and am hoping he will here too.
In fact, there were a lot of accusations thrown back at me that simply weren't true.
I can address them individually if the mods/admins will allow it.
Once again, in detail, what/who made you believe I wasn't a "nice guy"?

Oh what the heck - its better then TV. Here are some underlying facts and assumptions:
- i don't know proto at all in real life. All we've ever done is butt internet heads together.
- I vaguely know Dave Watson - he won't remember me.
- I wasn't there. All I'm observing is how proto explained himself and the reception he got back.
TO SUMMARIZE: Proto explained what happened in the Watson incident in a concise, factual manner and he was basically called a liar.
I would imagine he won't want to go through this same futile exercise again but its his call.
Here are now some comments on what i remember - don't make me go back and find that dropmachine thread.
1. In the threads where proto posted he was very careful to state the facts as he recalled them and to post what happened. I explicitly remember how factual he was in recounting the story. I remember that because I was putting my lawyer hat and thinking; "This would be a good witness",
2 proto then went on to explicitly note that what happened was, in his opinion, a matter of principle. I gathered that he was upset not so much at any damage to his bike or wheel but as to Watson's denial. THIS IS MY INTERPRETATION so apologies if I am putting words in his mouth.
3. I didn't really pay much attention to the nsmb thread but i vaguely recall that people who weren't there either explicitly or implicitly called him a liar. I remember that some of the dropmachine guys called proto a liar - there were some hilarious Ontario types there who behaved like they were Dave's soul-mates or something. I believe proto took some offence to being called a liar.

Maybe my memory is foggier than I thought.
I remember this:
Watson lands on rim/tire trying to hop over your bike at the base. You tell him to apologize, he rides away. You post this, some people say 'fuck watson', 'fuck sombrio' etc, then a bunch of others come back with 'fuck proto'. I thought I remembered you getting rather heated about the whole affair, and shit flying between you and board members and admins alike.
It was somewhat of a shitstorm, and you were at the center of it. Perhaps I gave you too much credit/blame for said shitstorm in my memory than you actually deserve.
The only reason I stepped into this was because there was some shit flung at people that I didn't think deserved it (mudpuppy for one). Although after re-reading, he did take a shot at you first, so I guess all's fair in love and NSMB.
Shit man, I take it back. I don't remember you well enough, or know you well enough now to call you a bad guy. Come riding.

I casually mentioned to him that he had come up short and he should make sure next time that he could clear it.
He told me to "Go Fuck Myself".
I just turned around and continued talking to my friends who happened to be vistiting from Japan.
When I approached him after the day was done he outright denied his own identity. NSMB BB member Haggard was with me at the time. He can confirm this. I think Johnny Smoke may have been there too, but I can't tell for sure as he had his sunglasses on.

I put the words "Boycott Sombrio" as my sig. When the admins said it was "in bad taste" I made this one:

When that offended the admins I removed it altogether.

It was with one admin I had the issue with. It should also be mentioned that the admin in question is/was also a sports agent who represents many of the local riders... Watson being one of them.

1) I did not spam the board.
2) I did not write one word of Grafiti at Whistler.
3) I did not 'shut down' the BB with a 'denial of service attack'. In fact I asked the admins for the ip/headers so I may assist NSMB in finding the person who did (if it really happened) and clearing my name. I was told "all information is property of NSMB and will not be shared". One admin went as far as posting a letter linked to the front page specifically naming me as the culprit. Only after I threatened him with legal action did he change the letter. On top of it...a 'denial of service attack' is considered a terrorist attack punishable under federal laws. Do you really think I'd be sitting here typing this if I had really done it? I'd be sitting in a jail cell. Just ask Mafiaboy.

I too might be having the same fogginess.....that is how I remember it...but as I said to proto in a PM....I am getting old and forgetting way more than I am comfortable with lately. lol
The so called "shot" was not aimed at proto...but at the situation, if it sounded like it was aimed only at him I am sorry. I re-read my post and I can see how it can be taken that way...it was not the best wording on my side.

While I'm not sure if I agree that boycotting sombrio for Watson's actions is right, I'm also not sure if it's right for someone to tell you that you can't publicly advertise your boycottation (if that isn't a word, it should be). You're boycotting them for a reason, and having it in a sig will make people ask WHY it's in your sig, which would let you explain your reasons. If it actually caused Sombrio any difficulty, they might take it up with NSMB. NSMB says that board members are allowed the same freedoms of speech that they would be anywhere else, with racism and bigotism being the only exceptions. Sombrio could then take it up with you, which could possible work things out nicely for everyone involved.
Enough typing for me...

Fighting for a matter of principle is always tricky as it is often very difficult to sway the other party to your way of thinking. Even if they do come around, it is normally begrudgingly. This is never satisfying as an arguement based on principle usually seeks a truthful and heartfelt response.
Personally, I've always found that those that are not willing to give a sincere apology on a matter of principle don't have any principles themselves. Same goes for those that don't understand the whole idea of principle too.

Neither am I. I just posted the first image that looked like a man of principle to me .
I think the serious issues have been addressed and dealt with to everyone's satisfaction (save maybe one), so it's time to make this thread fun again.
I propose that whenever you offer up a serious and philosophical post, you finish it up with a severely tasteless joke. Just to balance things out.

HAHAHAHA - good one man, my vote for post of the minute
I'll have to refrain from the severely tasteless joke tho, as my ability to be severly tasteless in the joke department can make Andrew Dice Clay look like a nun.

When I approached him after the day was done he outright denied his own identity. NSMB BB member Haggard was with me at the time. He can confirm this. I think Johnny Smoke may have been there too, but I can't tell for sure as he had his sunglasses on.
I was there for that part and it was a very poor attitude for a pro who represents the sport and his sponsors. It doesn't matter if he was having a bad day or not when you are an ambassador of a sport and are in an enviroment with young riders who may look up to you

Lee and Haggard, thanks for the info, sheds some light on the situation. I am tired....and now gonna go to sleep.
Now this thread is a nsmb history lesson. I like it.
So a horse walks into a bar and the bartender says "Why the long face?"
Thank you......not tasteless....and well, not funny......but it is a joke. (kinda)

Why did it take 2 years, an anonymous bb member, and a lawyer who really didn't have to get involved to confirm what I have been saying since the beginning?
To this day I don't know the answer myself but it certainly makes you realize who your friends really are.
At the time of the incident I'm called a lair.
Then when someone asks and I try to detail the events I'm labled as someone who holds a grudge.
I never really understood this bulletin board.
Anyways, I'm going back to lurking.
You guys seem to be perfectly happy without my daily input.

Thats not true, I miss your daily input :(
I took a peek in october 2000, i think, and shortly after that i went "full-time" member.
Yeah...the discussions were great.
It had something like a feeling of "the few", freeriding as it is today was even more a crazy idea only a handful of guys was doing, and now - big business. things change constantly, that's the only constant i guess.
and i really know what you mean by saying you feel like u r old, dude.
I can remember the day when you gave me advice on hucking and going big :D and how people were asking how to improve balance and overall bike handling abilities. with replies like "get out and ride" and the like.
I did not change my name, although i had a cool idea, something like "grandmaster crash". anyway, gotta go, some more learning to do :( no riding for today.
I'll keep an eye on this thread.

What I do not understand is why when I thank some of the other members for shedding more light on this in a clear, non aggressive way you get angry again. In the PM's that we sent back and forth you wanted me to ask both lee and haggard what they saw, but when they do post the events as they saw them and I thank them for it, you make a post like this. Damned it you do, damned if you don’t I guess.
At the time of the incident I'm called a lair.
Then when someone asks and I try to detail the events I'm labled as someone who holds a grudge.
I never really understood this bulletin board.
I am pretty sure I never called you a liar, but in all reality that was 2 years ago and sometimes my mouth gets ahead of my fingers. If I ever did I am sorry. That is not what I did not like about the situation, and I think you know that from our PM’s back and forth.
The way I see it is this was brought up within the context of nsmb history and then you pop in here with your back against the wall….at least that is how I see it. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
Anyways, I'm going back to lurking.

Don't leave over this one little thing, running away from it won't make it go away, it’s still going to be a part of nsmb history.....that will not change, but I think it would help if a lot of members heard it again, get the misconceptions out of the way, and I think that this thread has done that for some. I think you being back on the boards is great, too bad you feel that you are not welcome. I have apologized a few times for anything I might have said in the past and hoped that we could patch this up a bit, but not once have you ever tried to take back any of the name calling or bad feelings on your side, for that….I am truly sorry.
Goodbye proto, keep riding man…….and if we ever do meet…..you can kick my ass on the bike, and we can have some drinks afterwards.

Nat Bailey is the king of Olde School.
I remember him writing an awesome response to the "What is the gayest trail on the Shore" post.
Those were the days - and the days of Ah choo - who owes me about $800 and won't return my phone calls. Funny how things turn out isn't it?
Bring back Kona boy too - he was pure comedy only he didn't know it.
The board began sometime in 2000 but I can't remember when exactly. There have been many ups and downs along the way - it's certainly never been boring. Thanks for all the spice everyone.
