View Full Version : Info about the NSMB AIRprentice Freeride team tryout event

If you're interested in trying out for the last spot on the NSMB Freeride team (sometimes known as the "Freeloaders" for the amount of free gear they ask for - and get) then check out the story on the main page.

Since some of you often come straight here, I thought I'd give you a Coles notes version. READ FIRST, then ask questions.

Here's the scoop on the "NSMB AIRprentice" at Whistler, June 26:

It's a tryout, one day only - opening day of the Garbanzo chair, June 26, at Whistler.

How do you enter?

Send us a resume and some photos, maybe even some video before the event takes place to jay@nsmb.com. Then show up on June 26 - 8:30 am, with a hard copy of your resume, and at least two photos (so we know who you are).

We will choose a maximum of 12 riders to compete for the team spot so it may be that we will have to turn you away at the very beginning but at least you'll have the whole day to ride the new Garbanzo trails.

What do I get if I am chosen to be The AIRprentice?

If you are chosen as The AIRprentice (and there can be only one) you will receive all the bike gear you will need to rip it up for an entire year, as well as the 10th and final spot on the NSMB Freeride team.

The loot includes:

A Specialized Demo 9 frame
Syncros components and tires
SRAM X9 trigger shifters and an XO rear derailleur
Manitou Dorado MRD X-works fork
Manitou Swinger 6-Way Shock
Hayes HFX Mag brakes with 8" rotors
Dakine gloves, soft goods and a Apex pack
Specialized P3 decked out like the Demo but with a Manitou Sherman Firefly
$500 just to say thanks for coming out from our friends at Denny's and the good folks at Specialized

What will the tryout be like

The morning will be all about riding with our team riders and managers.
After lunch we'll make our first cut - if you get a rose you'll be invited to show us what you can do in the Boneyard and then maybe a few more runs after that if we have time.
The final step will be to put you on the hot seat at the GLC and to check you out in front of the crowd.

What are the responsibilities of an nsmb team rider?

As an nsmb team rider you'll be asked to come out to team events, take some trips with the group and get out there and be seen on your bike as much as possible. You will also be asked to be an excellent representative for us and the other sponsors. We will ask you to seek out opportunities for video exposure as well as other photographic opportunities. There will be times when we'll ask you to do some work at a trade show or judge an event but for the most part your duties are to ride and to ride hard.

What is nsmb looking for in a rider?

First and foremost we are looking for good people for our team, the kind of folks who stop and see if you need help on the trail and the kind of people we like to ride with. After that we'll be searching out riders who are pushing what is possible on a bike. You don't necessarily have to be going big but we'd like to see you riding with a lot of flair. We are also looking for well balanced riders who enjoy everything the mountain has to offer - and even the street.

When do I have to arrive?

Please be at the base of Whistler, resumé and photos in hand and ready to ride, by 8:30 AM on June 26th.

What should I bring?

You'll need your bike of course, some cash (we'll charge you a minimal amount to cover expenses - amount to be determined) and we hope to provide you with an AIRprentice t-shirt that will be yours to keep, a lunch and a barbeque dinner but those details have yet to be finalized. Armour is a very good idea and a full-face helmet is recommended.

Who can come out?

Ideally we would like a rider who lives in southwestern B.C. This isn't a hard and fast rule but most of the events we will want to see you at are nearby so if you live 12 hours away that will be tough. We have decided the minimum age we will accept is 15 so bring some ID. The maximum age is 64.

If you have any deals that will prevent you from riding the gear mentioned above please don't come out - we will need you to represent all of our sponsors.

Travel

You are responsible for getting yourself to and from Whistler on the day of the event.

Props to NSMB for opening up an oppertunity for someone, and props for picking up Ryan Newman!

Thanks AH. We're stoked about the addition of Ryan, and about the fact that someone 'unknown' out there will soon be wearing the 10th jersey.

Sounds super cool!!!!! I think I will get a entry going because by the sounds of it everybody here is too modest (even though u probly are better than me). I was just wondering, what exactly is a mountain bike resume? Like just saying what some our accomplishments are? like any racing, highlights, what would make us the best for the position? Thanks for all the help and the amazing chance that you are giving all of us!!!

That is a good question, FG. If anyone figures out what a mountain bike resume is, please let me know as well. Ok seriously, though, when putting together a resume, it doesn't have to be chock full of your race results, tricks you can do, etc, but that stuff helps. What it should do is tell us something about you (where you're from/live, are you in school or working, and where, what else do you do in your spare time). Of course it should also describe your years riding, interests, experiences, and goals. You can even include a few photos on your resume, too. This doesn't have to be as serious as the job resumes you put together, but you should take it seriously. For god's sake, get it spell-checked. It's not that we care if you can spell, it's a matter of you taking the time to make sure the details are covered, just like you would with your bike before a comp., photo shoot, or other important ride.

Lastly - don't come out just because you want to be spawn-sered. This is an opportunity for someone who wants to move forward in the business, because they take their riding seriously. You don't have to want to be a pro freerider, but you do have to understand that with the perks come responsibilities - it is a job in some respects, and you have to be ready to fulfill those and be there when we ask you to.

Keep the questions coming, I am happy to answer them.

Guilty as charged.

But I'm also guilty of leaving the country for the likes of Cam and Jay Sinclair to make it happen. As is the case with everything with NSMB, it's a team effort.

This event wouldn't be happening without their help, and our team sponsors, who ALL stepped up to help with this, not to mention Whistler who are always keen to get into the mix with this sort of thing.

a truly original idea for selecting the final team member, turns out i'll be in Whistler for the Garbanzo weekend so thought i might enter... then noticed that your looking for someone close to Vancouver so I guess scotlands out of the question

That would be a bit tough, yes. Although maybe one day soon, we'll be looking to fill a euro team, too - don't hesitate to go say hi to the crew.

wow!!! thanks so much for the info, yah don't worry I don't plan on comming out just to get spawn0sered but because I realize that it could help me take my mind off the more financial aspect of the sport and help it to progress and along the way helping to get the word out about the site a by being a nic and friendly person everywhere. And your comment about being a pro freerider, I wasn't even thinking of doing this till some friends of mine told me i should. Anyways yah no need 4 the life story. thanks

What do you mean by "job." Like what does that involve? Entering comps, supporting NSMB, etc.?

Now I kinda wish I could go:lol: Just for some fun and to meet some of you women:P. Change it to another day;)

Just Print your digi shots. You can take them (Or even email them) to london drugs and they will put them on photo paper if you want for pennies a copy.

But a decent printer output would be fine.

we will have the entire team assess the application, so we will need to be able to pass around your resume and photos the morning of the comp. For ease of use hard copies will work better.
