Don't sweat it too much. Go with the better deal. Each bike will kick some ass for him.

I'd vote for RMX. It is hand made here in Vancouver, and from what I've seen, Rocky Mountain is _very_ good at standing behind their warantees and making sure people are satisfied with thier bikes.
Just my $0.02,
Dave

I would say Demo 9. It look to be a fuller bike. More R&D in it too.

I know that there have been more models of the RMX, but it's almost like RM saw the problems and addressed them and tweaked the suspension specs. I haven't heard of extensive tests or seen pictures or seen a proto in action. The RMX is more of an upgrade. The Demo 9 is a new bike. Different ideas, alot of trail testing and riding. Listening to the market and taking it to the next level. They didn't have to make the DEMO 9 the Big Hit is.great RM could of done something different, Specialized have, so why shouldn't RM. Surely introducing new ideas can only be beneficial to the industry.

The RMX is a new bike built on the platform of previous RM bikes. The frame materials and construction is different, although it does retain the Thrust Link suspenion design with significant modifications.
I don't think anyone hears of "extensive tests" when new bikes are being developed. There were prototype bikes kicking around, just because you didn't happen to see one doesn't mean it didn't happen. It is a new bike taking an old design to a new level, and was developed based on rider input from the Rocky Team riders.
The Demo 9 is a new bike, but it is hardly revolutionary. It is a refinement on the Big Hit chassis, shifting shock location and modifying the rear end.
You say there was "A lot of trail testing and riding"? Did you see more of these prototype bikes than others? How much trail testing and riding are you talking about and how much more of it was there than the RMX or any other new rig on the market? I am curious as to how you can quantify this, because I sure couldn't.
"Listening to the market and taking it to the next level" - EVERY manufacturer does this, every year. That's how they stay in business and stay competitive, it isn't an exclusive theory demonstrated by the D9.
Bottom Line - Both of these bikes are a product of rider input and refinements. They both reflect new ideas and are progressive designs.
You seem to come across as biased towards the D9 (which is cool, we all have our favorites). But if you are going to compare and evaluate bikes, you'll have a more usefull contribution if you can step outside of that and view each bike for what they really are. :)

They are both class bikes but i see te D9 being uch more important in the biking indutry because it may just be an FSR design but it is venturing with ideas.
Every manufacturer does it, but specialized ha done it differently. Keeping all the values that are wanted by the riders but conveying it differently to what they could of much more of easily gone with.
The D9 is different to eerything i've seen before. the RFX amybe just as good at what it doe but it seems boring

Yeah, I havn't had to worry about warantee yet... but I'm not too worried about it. I don't think I'll have too much trouble getting the procycle rep on the phone.

The Demo9 has a lifetime warranty. Infact all Spec. bikes have life time.
its all about the Demo9...
while the RMX is a wicked bike aswell...
if u can afford the Demo9, thats the way u should go...

if you can you might want to stay away the procycle rep for BC. i'v talked to him in person befor. he well say that hes going to do something but he never does. the last 2 frame frame that have goten under warrent have been defective as well.

What ideas is the Demo9 venturing with? What could they have "more easily gone with"? Examples help.
It's definitely a tossup, Go with whichever is a better deal he thinks.

Tell him to buy both, and sent me the one he doesn't like:D

I'm trying to remember his name, I think it's peter. But yeah, he's a busy guy. Either way, I have a solid connection to him. If warantee comes into play, I'll see what happens

mmm.... what is the head angle like on the RMX? I found the Demo 9 felt pretty slack (possibly because of the fork?)
The RMX would be my choice simply because for similar coin I like the buying Canadian made product over Taiwan... I am certain both are wicked bikes...
One nice thing... if you're choosing between specialized models (since the bearings etc. are the same in their big hit lines) is that the Demo 9 has a damn short chainstay for a bike with that much travel... whereas the Rocky RM-7 (never ridden the X) felt a little on the long side

Excellant point, I haven't gotten the chance to ride the RMX but if the wheelbase is similar to the RM7 i would definately take the demo 9 over it. Also to add, the chainstays on the RMs haven't held up at all in the past, whereas I have yet to see a D9 chainstay break..

Haven't seen a broken swingarm on an RMX either... :D
If Thomas Vanderham hasn't broken one yet, that'd be a pretty good stamp of approval.

NSMB is too full of bias to be of any help anymore, some of the comments are ridiculous and false, im seeing some people make things up to only help their opinion along. Seriously, the only way to get a good idea is going to a bike shop and trying the bike out then going and doing the research yourself, nsmb is a last ditch effort now IMO :(

So does that mean that I shouldn't even listen to your comments? :D
Played a bit on an RMX last week (with a Swinger shock). Rear suspension feels awesome.
What an improvement in performance, the last couple years, with the new shocks that are available.
