new drop i just finished on my new trail.
should be a smoooth one, 7 feet to a smooth transition(no dansition!).
trail should be completed in a few more weeks, then the bigger stunts will start to go in.for now i'm just laying out the groundwork(another 20meters to go),and doing the smaller bridges and that so you can ride the entire thing.should be a ripper.will meet up with my other trail scream machine to make a nice long run.

i'll be at work on the weekend(grumble grumble).
i'd rather ride on monday than build methinks, and i can only go for a very short time.i have 4 months worth of papers and crap due on tuesday,so i'll have to see how far i get into them in the next couple days.if at least no riding,we could head up and do a little bit of trail work i guess.
lugging 55 lbs of shakes up there and another 10 of nails was no easy task this morning..i swear the squirells were scared of all the swearing and yelling i was doing.

I must attest to the fact that the stuff Julian builds is beef.
Aint going nowhere, for a long long time.
Monday is fine for me, but whatever. I dont wanna get soaked again, cuz that will suck.
Did you scope out any nice lines up above where we were? down the ravine from SW?

i already have trail cut & raked from the switchback above there(the spot we looked at making a step down around).(minus around 20 meters).
then after the drop there is another 20 meters or so that needs to be punched through.probably do up a bunch of small gaps like the ones on scream machine to even everything out.'twill be good whence done.i'll probably head up on friday for a few hours to get all the upper trail done.

they widdle each rung. see, the best trailbuilders are either borderline professional, or professional wood widdlers by trade.

damn rights.i can usually manage about 17.3(this is on average,of course) perfect shakes out of a young cedar(6 inch diameter/35 feet tall).
it takes alot of work, but the payoff is worth it.just look at em!

wtf - Young cedars? You're not cutting down live cedars are you? Plus, using young cedars for rungs (shakes are cedar shingles on the roof of a house) is not cool. Find some blowdown or deadfall that are old and big and you'll get way more than 17 rungs out of each one.
Nice work tho. :)

I'm not sure if you're joking or what.
obviously the shakes are from blowdown.there is an abundance of that on the coast.i call them shakes, you call them rungs.same shit, different ass.
what there is NONE of,is blowdown of cedars small enough to use as stringers.this means i can happily cut down small stringers to my hearts desires, without running into crap from other builders/riders.
things are different up here than in vancouver.

ok... so you widdle it huh? thats cool sounds a little time consuming but is cedar that much better than store bought wood?
well ridden
03-25-2004, 08:24 PM
he was joking about widling it.
cedar is way better to use.
you just get nice dry cedar logs, stick a hatchet in the top ( or what ever you use to split) and hit it with a hammer. then just keep doing that till you get nice staight pieces

flat needles that fan out (ie. not bushels) with no pine cones or anything. the bark peels off in long strands and doesnt have huge big crevasses in it. the bark colour is kind of a light brown for live stuff, not grey or black or anything.
if theres live stuff standing, chances are there's dead stuff on the ground.

heh, nope.nothing of the sort...most of the forest isn't cedar...it's a struggle to find cedars for stringers sometimes.what makes the sunshine coast different from places such as squamish or the shore is that it isn't a steep mountain at all,and thus there is no erosion/blowdown like that of the shore.we have the benefits of little to no erosion(people who ride up here will attest),but lack deadfall on this side of the mountain.there ARE parts of Mt. Elphinstone(the mountain all these trails are on) which have deadfall, but inthose cases,it's so dead that it's more or less worthless unless you want to bash it up and make it into cotton batting.

couple o thin shakers but otherwise really nice trail w / super challenging stunts (for me at least).>
yeah the upper trail(which had pics of) is still in the n00b stage..it's a little rough still.give it a bit of time,i've just been working so much lately, and trying to cram my papers in as well...it's just not working.havn't been riding in like 14 days, starting to go squirelly..
the thin shakes were what chris built when he helped us..he finished the stunt off on his own, those shakes are hella toothpick man,i'd really like to get a saw up there, buck up some wood and throw some good shakes on that first bridge onto the rock, but alas...it'll have to wait a little while.those shakes definately classify as pinners though.

everything else is nailed down..

yea I must not have walked up far enuff after careful scrutiny Im thinking that the one in the picts I didnt see, I did see a different one w/out a deck on it yet that looks like it will be really nice.you have been doing lots of work.
no deck eh..shit..this has me fucking baffled :S
oh hold on,theres a couple that you musta seen.theres a launch that chris also built that shoots into the bridge onto the rock, which is just a launch..no deck at all.then up a bit higher there is a drop into a natural tranny which hasn't been built yet.
yeah, you must not have hiked up high enough.the bottom of the trail is up past sidewinder,ie you just keep hiking up the super steep part and you come across it.theres a last gap jump, then you sorta follow the beaten path and you'll get to the drop.then from there you can follow the traileasily..

alright thanks man that helped. seeing a pic of it is all i need. there may be some standing but it will be difficult to find one fallen. thx anyways. btw i live in washington, near seattle, where i believe there is a fair amt?
hey bud, I dont know if this is the information you've been looking for or whatever, but I have been meaning to write some of this stuff down for a while to pass on to the groms in town who insist on building using rotten alder and whippy little sticks for beams.
this is what I have so far, I have to wait until I get home to put up a majority of the photos and diagrams, so check it later on this week or something maybe to see if its done.
if anyone has anything that i missed or got wrong, or has some more advice i'd be stoked on hearing it and adding it to my thing with credit. the blog setup is just temporary, eventually i will have it in full article format on http://ctbf.ca/
but for now : http://alpinescrub.blogspot.com/
come to think of it there is like jack all in that post in terms of identifying them.. i will remedy that tonight maybe.
