Hey I finally got a good offer on my bike, but the guy seems kind of fake in the way he speaks.
heres what he said in an email today:
"I am a car and bike dealer based in Huddersfield. I saw your advert
placement on the internet and I am interested in buying your (Mint Complete 243 With No Fork..CHEAP!! )Please forward me your final asking price only. My shipping agent will handle the shipping and pick-up. Also indicate if you will accept a cashier check drawn from a US. bank for payment. i ticipate your early
tom"
well, it seems ok if I get the money first, but i dont know..
does he sound legit? I'm going to email him back with a price, and see if he actually responds...:(
what do you think?
thanks,
cam
edit: hes from england (as he says), so its not one of those back east scams that people have gotten recently...:???:

Looks and sounds exactly like the scam emails. I'd wait for a real offer, it's not worth the trouble.
Or if you must do it, get the money, and wait for it to clear %100 even if it takes a few weeks for thtat to happen.
It sounds to me like someone is trying to fuck you though.

I am always wary of strangers in a situation like that...especially when they word a response like that. I smell a skunk, but I sure would love to be proven wrong as well.
Good luck if you do pursue that option!

well, I just emailed him back with my asking price. I raised my price up $50 to see if he even budges. i also said that I want a cashiers cheque to clear before I send it.
good enough?

Don't accept a check. Cash or Money Order only. Sounds like a scam to me too. Be aware and trust noone.
cameron
03-11-2004, 04:32 PM
ok IF and WHEN he gets back to me, i'll tell him cash or money order...just remember, it MIGHT sound like a scam, you never know...
as long as I get my money first, I dont care where it goes :)

hes from the UK but wants to send a US cheque. id raise the price a good 100-200 then if he accepts, get the cheque, call the bank daily until it clears, then andonly then mail the bike off.
if you get the cheque then mail the bike, you run the risk of the buyer putting a stop payment on the cheque and you are then screwed out of payment and bike. never a fun situation to get yourself into.
go with your gut feeling on the guy.
ask him for his phone and give him a ring...see how he is on the phone.
bahahaha
cam, it seems that you are having more troubles and stress selling the bike to quit, just keep riding?
i got the exact same letter on email, with some weird domain, definately scam
cameron

yeah thats my plan..IF he ever gets back to me, i'll say to send cash asap, then when I get it in my hands, i'll send the bike :)
good plan. thanks seand

yeah but mike, this isnt some strange domain..its a yahoo account. but its worth a shot. if he's just fucking around, then he wont get back to me. but if he really is the guy who he says, i'll make a profit off a scam..
a friend of mine is going to buy it in 3 weeks when he gets all the money, but I need the cash before then;)
but like I said, its worth a shit..:)

Get a money order or certified check and wait for them to clear before sending. I soled my biek to a guy in Ontario and am getting the payment next week. Long distance sales can work. I bought the bike from someone in the eastern US....so its all good.

Unless you're hurting for cash or desperate to quit as buddy said, I'd wait until you have cash in your hand, and the person in front of you. In other words deal locally only. With how many people are in the area who ride, the most likely place to sell it is here. If you've been waiting a long time to sell, then might I suggest you take a good look at the price you're asking for...
walk away from that deal...
sounds like you'll end up getting burned...

No, it sounds like one of those scams from England instead. I'd dodge this one for sure man.

Long distance sales can work. hell I sold my old RM7 to a guy in Australia. You just gotta make sure you do everything right and do some agreements with the guy beforehand. I hand him send a money order for the asking price of the bike first, waited for it to clear, and then I sent the bike. Upon his receiving of the bike he sent me the full cost of shipping in another money order. It all worked out beautifully.

Yeah.....I will put more input here. I don;t like the way the email is worded, I would back away....or see how far he wants to take it.

I'm pretty sure there was someone else on this board that experienced the exact same kind of thing you're dealing with a while ago. It was some scam from england trying to use some US cashiers check or something along those lines. I wouldn't even think about it. If you can wait 3 weeks for your friend to buy it, then why not just do that?

only accept Bank Drafts or cash

Sounds like a form letter to me. The guy probably just filled in your address and your bike (hence the bracketed part) and sent it off.
So I would not sell.

ok well I got another email from him today..
"Dear Cameron McKinnon.
Thanks a lot for your response.I am still very much interested in your Complete 243 With No Fork, presently located in singapore but not to worry everything will go on well.As regards the shipping I contact a shipping company they will be contacting you as soon as you have the payment, you are to send the balance so they can be on ground to pick up the Complete 243 With No Fork as soon as we seal this transaction. As regards the payment, there is a client of mine in the Us that is owing me $6,500.00 I would instruct him to make out a check to you although the money is more than the value of the Complete 243 With No Fork but i am willing to trust you with the money. As soon as you have payment you can send the remaining balance to the shipping agent via western union money transfer.
The reason why i am doing this is because it would take a least 30 days for a check sent from over here to clear whereas it would only take between 2-3 days for a check sent within the Us to clear. And this isthe fastest way for me to send money to you no! w. If my terms is acceptable to you, please mail me the following informations so that i can instruct my client to send the money to you as soon as possible. The name of the recipient of the check, address and cell and land phone number.
Thanks in anticipation.
Tom."
Should I email him my address and tell him to send a Money Order asap?
I've never seen a scamer actually email someone back..
Thanks,
Cameron

Don't do it, this is a major scam; they tell you that someone owes them money and get a third party to write a cheque for a large amount, and then want you to send the product and the large amount of money to them, but the cheque they sent will bounce, and you will be out of your bike and a lot of money.
Sell face to face, it's the only way to be sure.

yeah, and the e-mail just sounds funny... he uses the "Complete 243 With No Fork" line 3 times... it seems like he just copied and pasted it in there or something. I swear that there were some threads a couple months ago about these types of scams going on. It sounds like the exact same thing going on.

read eat durt's last post.......................who would ever say .243 with no fork every time they mentioned the bike. No offence dude, but it is so obviously a scam..........the only thing he could do would write HEY BUDDY THIS IS A SCAM on it to make it more obvious.....
the whole my buddy in the states owes me money thing.......c'mon.
Didn't you say he was originally from england...now he's in singapore.
All I can is you owe NSMB for creating this BB and saving you alot of money.
It's really great that folks that don't even know each other can help out.....
sorry if I sound smarmy but that email got me kinda steamed.....trying to screw dudes out of their hard earned rigs..........

send him an empty box........this does seem like an opportunity to catch the fuckhead......any ideas.. real ones from some of our more internet savvy friends.............if he is sending emails there has to a trace factor....
on the down low yo......lets bury this fool. He(she) prolly does it on more than just bikes. Maybe we could be breaking up a major on-line crime ring.....??
It may be a long shot, but lets stew on it for a while shall we...??
cameron

should I actually send him an empty box? That'd be a good idea, but I'd still be out shipping for the costs :P
