View Full Version : Fromme from the Grouse Skyride

I have read about this before about why Grouse Mtn doesn't go after the mountain biking market. The reasons were insurance, cost of lift equipment, short season & conflicts with toursists, etc. But I wonder if they could just provide trail access? Just like the people who use the Grouse Grind, except in reverse. They could sell you a summer pass, put you & your bike on the old blue skyride, send you down Blueberry and from there you're at the 7th...?

I'm assuming all the NO's are from a fear of the hill getting overrun. I'm not sure you could really get that many people up in a day on the blue skyride to have that much of an impact. The scheme would also lessen parking in residential areas.

Probably more like 15-20 bikes every 45 minutes using the old skyride. With about 5 diferent options down the impact would be small.
there is a reason why the fromme trails are in far better shape than Seymour. Lets keep it that way.

More to the point, why don't they wake up to the success of Whistler and offer bike lifts on the hill itself? One of the local hills doing what other resorts have done would relieve a lot of stress on shuttled mountains and provide a friendly riding environment like whistler minutes from DT Vancouver.
Am I missing something?

agreed the trails on fromme are in better shape from less use. but we're not talking about a road up fromme; we're talking limited access from the skyride. no way that equates to what happens on seymour. in fact using the skyride will actually help lessen the impact of the automobile around the base of fromme - a real concern of the residents.

Think about it.
Look at how far away the bottom of Grouse is to the bottom of Fromme. You take the tram, ride down. Where does that leave you? A hell of a long climb up on a big bike after a ride. That is where. Or having to figure out rides back and all of that.
The parking issue will just become an issue elsewhere. Mainly at the bottom of Grouse.
The only way you can get a bike up is in the service tram, which hardly runs and you are not allowed to ride in.
Fromme is Fromme because you have to ride up. You have 2 other mountains you can shuttle. Is that not enough?
I would like to see a local mountain open up a bike park though, Cypress has a quad, that would be the best option prolly. That would really take a lot of the heat off of the local mountains, IMO. Maybe someone could run that one by Crist :)

I advocate the shuttling of digg's mom on the Grouse Mountain Skyride.

- Hmmm, I was thinking Bitches Brew or Executioner might hook-up to the Powerline, but you know I'm not really so sure.

- They have a nice big dirt lot up there.

- Yeah, that is the part that would have to change.

Just another vote for "Get off your fat ass and ride up". I like Fromme because all the lazy fat ass shuttle monkeys stay off it. Let them go to Seymour were they belong.

sunday rider, you're totally right that it would be feasible, but like they say 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. Pedalling uphill sucks, but it rules too

I totally agree and I love the ride up too, just sometimes don't have the time or energy...
On another note, does anyone know where the road goes that disappears into the bush off the powerline at the top of skyline drive?

fromme is great the way it is Imo it's never very crowded it's nice, good riding so why ruin it and have to pay just to get a ride up it.
It would be cool to do alot of runs on fromme in one day but thats what whistler is for

That is the beauty of our situation here in North Van, we get to ride to the best trails. Want to shuttle?? Seymour, Cypress, and oh yes, Whistler.
Want to ride up to enjoy some of the most prestine trails in the world?? Earn 'em!! Start ridin'.
Say NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS to any shuttle/charilift on Fromme!!!!
:thepimp:
Whistler does not make money running the bike park. they break even.
for the hassle, grouse figures its not worth it

There are no bike parks on the local mountains because, Seymour is I belive in the Seymour provincial park (can only operate for a specific time) so cross that off. Cypress can only be open from a certin time of the year so if they get a good snowfall they have to close at a certin time even if they still have snow. Grouse makes more money in the summer than they do in the winter and they don't want to risk lossing tourists and now that they are running the cut chair as a "ride" for all the tourists and apparently the other chair's area is too steep to ride.
How lazy do you have to be to not make the climb up Fromme? It's a piece of cake compared to, say, Woodlot.
Suck it up. Ride.

actually woodlot's not so bad - i'd compare it to the hike up Eagle to the top (massage therapy?) and fromme is definitely a cakewalk.
i agree with everyone else - say NO to shuttling fromme

shuttling is a plague :P
but seriously, imagine what kind of condition Seymour would be in if you couldn't shuttle it.

Love to sound repeditive, but the one thing stoping you is a big red or blue cable car and at least 2 grouse workers.
