Hey guys!

As many of you know I'm going to be returning to vancouver again this summer, this time for 3 months!

Right now I'm struggling to find accomodation and have just found out that the job I thought I had is no longer possible:(

So!

I'd like to live somwehere not too far from downtown Van, and close enough to ride to the shore.... was considering places like burnaby, and north shore etc....

If any of you know of anybody who rents houses then please get in touch.... There will be 3 of us comming out between june and september! We are all engineering students from the UK, and will obviously look after the place very well!

We were also wondering if there were any people looking for house sitters over the summer period! obviously we would pay rent!

As for jobs.... well Ideally I'd love a bike related job, of something very outdoors orientated! I ride fairly well, and climb a lot as well, so maybe something like forestry commision, or outdoors sports center??? those would be awsome! and well bike design, that would be even better! However I guess beggers can't be choosers, so any jobs would be awsome.

Might even considder living and working in Whistler!;)

Thanks loads!

Keith:D

you have your working holiday visa right?

nsnews is a good source for renting a place. just get an apartment for the summer and break your lease when you leave. Damagage deposits are 1/2 a months rent so no big deal.

I might be able to help you out with a job in Whistler if your into it. I am the maintenance manager at a hotel and ther is supposed to be a part-time position coming up. Housekeeping is always looking for people too, its not glamorous and not much $ but we are right at the base of the lift. Housing is easy in the summer too.

what happened to all your big plan's keith? Im sure I can help out. But your gonna have to come to the conclusion your summer stay in Van is gonna cost a fair amount of cash. You have to remeber its gonna be hard to find a house your looking for easly. As housing is super expensive, people are not intrested in short term renters, and the lack of rental units .It will also be hard to find a good ( high) paying summer job especialy when none of you guys are gonna have a car to get to diffrent job sites if you want say a labourers job. I will ask one more of my friends who lives a few houses away if she can have you guys

as a homeowner on the island, i can safely say that a good short term renter beats a long term grow op renter.

yeah well you know... shit happens eh?

I know it's going to be a bit pricey, but it's not really, compaired to UK prices. Infact we are in contact with a couple of people who are looking for month to month renters! just not sure if we will get them, so need to keep looking, also something better might come up, you neve know?

As for the car issue... well actually me and my mae were probably going to try and buy a cheep second hand van to get around while over there, then sell at the end.

But thanks a lot for keeping an eye out, much appreichiated.... and it's very likely that I may well end up crawling back to ya later

cheers big ears!:P

Oh and we all have working visas sorted out!:)

Might be difficult to get a lease signed in the first place, considering that they are three engineering students with nary a long-term visa or full-time job among them.

I think you'll have better luck house-/apartment-sitting for the summer, or continuing to mine the NSMB network.

I thought Bunny mentioned something about renting out rooms to bikers. Or was that a joke?:P

Either way, good luck.

it was a joke. but now i really might do that. :)

just think... wouldn't it be better to stay at the bottom of fromme with stunts and skinnies in the backyard, and awesome water pressure :P than, well anywhere else?

i think these guys want a whole house though... i only have 3 empty rooms downstairs.

i'm sure you'll find something closer to summer. :)

Three empty rooms is more than enough for a bunch of students. Heck, when I was going to college I lived in a cardboard box for a couple of semesters....:D

Would be nice to get your thoughts!?

Just remember,
you can save some money by not paying rent or anything for the last while you are there,

and

you can find a job easier by not telling them you only want one for 3 months, then just leave.

I mean no one can really do anything about it, you are going back to Scotland!

I don't see how you could go wrong with Bunnytron's place then. She's pretty close to Fromme, which also makes it accessible to Seymour, Cypress and the highway for Squamish/Whistler access.

Send her a PM and tell her what nice, friendly gentlemen you are.

You've partly answered your question. Buy a van, live in it in one of the lots in whistler (I think there is one where you can camp and not get the boot). Look for work while living in the van, and riding. When you find work, then rent a place. The ski bum experience, with a freerider's influence - go for it!

I've deffinatly considered it!

It may happen, who knows? live the life eh?

do you recon there is any chace of getting a job maintaining the trails in whistler??? that would be awsome! I'd love that!

pete@nsmb.com

Slim chance - they don't employ too many folks on maintenance, and I think the guys they do have are locked in because they do some trail design and building as well - a pretty sweet job. However you shoudl give it a shot. The problem is you won't have much chance until you get there and they can meet you.

Instead, set up a maintenance pit at your van, and take turns manning it with your buddies - do tuneups, clean bikes, etc. Station yourselves right in the parking lot (aka - your back yard) and you'll be in the perfect place when people who have driven up from the city pull their bikes off the car and realize they need to tune their bikes. You could also offer a bike lockup service.

Is anyone listening to these ideas???

Oh, and sell hot dogs and brewskis. And have a small swimming pool, with a few girls with bikinis inside (your accent will attract them) and charge $5 for a dip.

got a reply from whistler, a mega long one!

to be a tour guide I need qualifications, that cost a fair bit, and will not be worth it due to time taken to do it and clear it all through

however they say there is a chance of maintenance work, or of being a lifty:)
