As a major sponsor of many teams including the NSMB Free Ride Team, here's what I look for in anything I sponsor for Denny's Canada:
Brand exposure - I look for teams or indivuduals that can carry the Denny's Brand in a professional and people friendly way. When a team gets sponsored they ARE the brand they represent. In effect, we are buying the individual's reputation in that community.
Community involovement - the Team or person must be active in the community by way of offering autograph sessions, demo's etc.
The team or person must open up a new market - By picking a team or person prominent in a market, that person or team opens this market up for the brand through their association.
The erosn or team must work with the brand - I have my teams hand out coupons, display banners, I have also given each NSMB rider bike decals, I have had special t-shirts made for them, I have given the team free food coupons and I am also making collector hockey-card style coupons for them to hand out.
Above all, the team or peron must be professional in appearance and attitude. Remember, you ARE the brand!

ok ok...sorry! but i couldnt resist :)
in all serioiusly...you summed it up perfectly. from all the companies (no matter the sport) that are looking to take on new athletes, they all pretty much have the same stance you do.
our local freestyle ski team picked up a few new riders and a lot of the competiton was surprised on their choices. Sure the riders they took on were not as good as some of the others, but they had the attitude and team player persona that the team leaders were looking for. you can teach a rider how to ride better; you cant teach a rider how to be a better person.

For a little bit of a heads up on what it takes watch the UFC vids and see the level of talent you are up against... now add in the fact that you have to fill all the above requirements for personality and work ethic etc.... now think long and hard and honestly about yourself and abilities... if you still think you've got what it takes put together a package that includes pics, videos and biography that looks profesiona and will impress people that see stuff like that all the time.... then prepare for tons of rejection... and eventually if your lucky, talented and work your ass off you might get sponsored. The other way is to get into D.H. racing and win tons of races to get attention then do a crossover to freeriding after everyone knows your name. No matter how you look at it, it's tons of work.
If all you want is nice gear and time to ride you are better off getting an education and a good job.

just keep in mind there's more to it than getting free parts, discount stuff and fame.;)
seand
03-09-2004, 02:38 PM
ontop of all of that...
most companies wont even look at a rider who doesnt have a rap sheet a mile long with page spreads, media exposure, and titles beside their name...
becoming a professional freerider is one of the hardest things to accomplish...
if you want to get paid to be on your bike...id opt for dh or xc...it would be easier.
NickS
03-09-2004, 03:52 PM
Id say get into dh racing its easy to get on a team and you can advance from there. After my first year i got on a team. Dh racing you get to know alot of people also.

Get known, get good, and have the right attitude.
Attitude is the most important. I dunno, I guess it's more of a natural thing. Being nice to everyone that rides, none of this "Ohhh, you're such a poser blah blah blah" or anything. But yea, that's more personal behaviour than anything else.
Respect for everyone riding a bike I guess.
And know what YOU can do for the company. Why would they wanna give you discounts? What do you do for them?

im saying its not all its cracked up to be because when i was younger, like when i was 12 i thought that getting sponsored was like to get EVERYTHING free. not that i am, "i see the light". lol
trust me i greatly apreciate(sp?) my sponsors! i would be so screwed if i didnt have them, cuz i am simply too young and dont have the money for everything (as i know many of us dont).
just get your name out there, enter some contests, get to know people, get out for a ride with some pros/shop owners/company owners etc. etc. and just let them know that you are interested. worked for me.

I think norco has an amazing view on sponroship. I suggest that everyone take a look at that link and read it, wether your sponsored already or not, because it's awesome, and outlines everything.
I know that even some sponsored rider today are total assholes... sure they can ride, but as far as their people skills go, if your not as cool as their shirt, they diss you. Which is wrong, and no company should pick them up. Thats why I like Norco's view on it. Riding isn't everything...

For FR, it's probably not worth it. Get a buddy at the LBS and you are set.
For XC or DH, having someone to pay the entry fees and be there to fix your bike is good. There's also a lot more focus and money on those events.

Exactly. And the only reason HE is sponsored is because he applied to join the NSFT who put out an open application that they were accepting anyone who wanted onto the team.
Regardless, sponsorship is nice, but unless you're willing to go out of your way to do something for the company, odds are you won't get anything.

Taz take a step back, your team is random people who applied for a team and got recruited off the internet. You got some sponsorship support for the team cause your putting on demos. Which is all cool, werd to showin the sport some exposure. The wierd part comes in with you (and I'm not tryin to pick on ya) rollin around on the internet trolling for opportunities to drop sponsors names and stuff? Dude, it's not THAT big of a deal. To some professional riders, their sponsors are their rent payments and their meals. For your team it's just helpin you all put on kicken demos, ride your bikes, have their names associated with the exposure the demos give, and give you all the opportunity to rep through a good attitude. You throwing out your sponsors names all over the internet just makes you look like your taking advanatage of your teams support for personal ambitions.
I'm not trying to be an ass. It's not an issue of it being wrong to ackowledge those who help your team, there's just a point of modesty when taking it seriously and I think sometimes people cross that line.

Once you have spent a small fortune on your bike racing or whatever, maybe somebody will come along and make things a bit cheaper. That is sponsorship for all but a very small few. I know somebody who beat a lot of top pros in Canada last year iin a couple of races, who works in a shop, AND WAS NOT SPONSORED at all! So it depends on a lot of things.

my comment was directed to the slow people who never let faster people past or don't bother to step up the pace when they have a faster rider behind them.
so in Schleys case, He was moving slightly faster than me(I was doing all I could to try and keep up) so he was in no way slowing me down on the trails. If anything it was giving me the urge to go faster and see how well I could manage to keep up.

I think this thred has gone slightly off topic... but I would like to agree with Diggs, in saying that I had very little problem seeing and choosing, even just through his application email, that Timmy was a very well rounded rider. He's got skills on the trails, and is one of the nicest guys you will meet. Were glad to have him with us, and I see nothing in his way to rise to the top one day.

For the most part, I don't mind people riding infront of me on the trails.
It just Frustrates me when I'm ripping down a trail and come across another person who is going dead slow and not letting other riders past or not picking up the pace for the rider behind them.
So, as long as you let the faster riders past or pick up the pace for them, you'll be fine.

You could all be sponosored if you stopped arguing lame topics like sponsorship, and putting more effort into real topics like our riding areas being shut down..
OUT OF CONTROL!
dude, it's way more fun to go on the internet and tell everyone about your sponors though, I mean that's way more important

its not because we are mean andhave nothing better to do, but it the things that your team members say, and how they act.
I think the team leader should straighten out the team
so you can judge them by what two of their riders say on the BB's?
I cought up for a ride with these guys one day a while ago. There were like 8-10 guys there. You have heard comments from two. I don't know all their names, or who they are on the boards, but let me tell you, they are pretty cool people in person, so you can't say the whole team are n00bs when it's only one or two who are posting up.
Make fun of them now... but when you see the other guys, who don't walk around the boards running their mouths, you will want to chill and ride with them. super funny and nice group of guys.
