View Full Version : HARO IS GONE

Del
03-05-2004, 01:48 PM
The excavators came in today and ripped everything out so far except the DJs (i hope they wont get ripped down but you never know). There is going to be a massive dig day on sunday to rebuild. Check out www.dirtyrobot.net for details.
I for one am sort of glad all the stunts are gone because they were all sketchy, but stuff liek the slalom course wasnt even big enough to really get hurt on, it was really fun and its just completely destroyed.

Just one example: Before:

Del

As far as I know right now, they ripped it down not because someone got hurt, not because someone complained, but because they are SCARED that will happen. According to Landon, photo number two, this happens every so many years here...

a bit odd

Ouch, I only put in a fraction of the work that went into that set, but it feels like someone killed my cat. They will rise again, bigger and better. On a bright note, the dirt will be nice and soft for digging now that they chewed it up and the path will be nice and wide.

Straw
03-05-2004, 02:28 PM
Yea, I was just in there, and heard all the diesel motors going and got worried. Some of those stunts were good, but some had nails sticking up, beckoning my tires.

Like Del said, the DirtJump sets are still there. Hopefully they will not get touched.

I'll be up for this Sunday thing.

And to think that I was just talking about how nice it was to do so many refinements to 'Deese jumps after resurecting them about two springs ago. 'cest la vie, I guess. The fact that they didn't do anything to restore/block the trail after plowing the jumps speaks volumes for how much they actually care for the ecology of the area though. Have fun rebuilding, I'll be on it after Sunday!

Straw

Yea, they just drove their bobcats right through the bush to get to the stunts. Pretty rediculous.

Too late. Gone as Aaron just said. I just went back. I dont fucking get it, like there is even a sign leading into the jumps by Queen Alexandra (whatever that is) saying they do not maintian the woods and you go in at your own risk and everything... :(

The Queen Alexandria Hospital is just across Arbutus Road from the woods. It's a children's hospital. I guess they own the property. I think it's for terminally ill children, but i'm not 100% sure.

You've gotta wonder, hey if there's not some sort of conspiracy going down among the local govenments with all the shit that has been going on lately.

They're so fucking sleezy, too the way they roll in with their bobcats and chain saws without telling anyone and just fucking flatten and hack everything in their path.

Fuck 'em all.... assholes!

03-05-2004, 06:04 PM
i love how they say they took them down because of the natural disturbance, yet they drove fucking bobcats thru the forest to get to the jumps....

EVERYONE BUILD TOMORROW AND SUNDAY..... go in through the back way, so no one from the complex sees people going in. Bring as many shovels, wheel barrows, ect as possible.

thanks, brendan

You know you guys... you're only going to get all your hard work bulldozed again.

I'd suggest you get yourselves organized. Get some spokespeople for your group... if your all teenagers, maybe get some parents involved and go to the council and find a long term solution.

Most councils will actually be open to dirt jumps.. just like skate parks.. but they have to be in on the deal. They have to give the nod on where you build them etc..

It's no use fighting them, they'll win every time. If you go through the right avenues, you'll probably end up with great dirt jumps that you get to keep.

I have already gone to a tone of work to getting a jump park, it will be constructed soon in North Saanich. Dangerboy and Simbs are sponsoring it. And haro is a good place, the people seem to be fine with it just that one dude, and its expensive to plow the jumps again. If they do thats ok its fun building and I get better at it each time.

they gave me crash replacment. and i hear what your saying dirty deeds but over here in vic it dont work like that. it took us 2 years to get a shitty skatepark with 2 quaters and half a pyramid put in. the size of a tennis court. there is nothing realy that we can do. i am going to go talk with queen alexanderia about giving us some land thats aloud to be built on but i think it will be a lost cause. it might work tho and i will try as well as my parents and i know of lots others that will help

That's cool, if it's all just a cat and mouse prank, have at 'em. But they sound like pretty cool jumps that would be nice to keep. It's up to you guys. But I'd try for a permanent solution before charging in with the shovels again.

Over here, for instance the kids had Jay (Hoots) Krantz do a shit load of lobbying with North Van Council with the help of parents and ended up with some pretty good dirt jumps.

Good luck, whichever way you go. Every town needs good dirt jumps.

Well, there are 0 jumps/trails really in the entire victoria area. Soon there will be N Saanich as Mark mentioned but thats like 30min atleast away by car. We will just rebuild em, as Jarret said it is pricey and tough to keep sending in diggers, especially with the obvious impact they made on foliage and stuff. Well do it again, as always and see what happens. As far as i can tell this isnt a park where they will do any kind of sanctioned jumps I dont think it is that kind of land. So as it stands we just keep on given er.

the second jump is a lot higher than the first, the gap is comparable. The landing is fairly wide and the 3rd lip is 5 or so feet high. There is also a smaller lip for a hip beside the 3rd jump that will hook onto the 3rd landing. It will be done tomorrow.

to whoever was saying we should attempt to go through the proper channels:

last year my friend and i did some serious work trying to get a dirt jump park in oak bay / uvic area, we made a presentation at an oak bay council meeting, had full support from simbs and oak bay bikes, and it just turned out that there was no space and no inclination. we'd come up with tons of possible locations but it just didn't work out. we even talked about that field at uvic where there used to be those tiny jumps, but oak bay council said that they've been trying to get uvic to let them use it, presumably to expand henderson, but uvic refused to allow to to be used for anything.

at any rate, that's really too bad about haro, i'll come out and dig when i have time.

I feel sorry for you guys, I recently built a series of lines out of a massive bank to jersey barrier. It took me hours to clean up out all the garbage weeds and then shape it all. Then after a few months the city decides to put a fence in front of it and plant thorn bushes on the bank. It's amazing that the city can act so damn fast when a few old ignorant people complain, but when any kids try and organize somthing llegit the city doesn't do jack squat. Gotta love victoria!

Oh my lord.

I went to Haro today to see the damage first hand, and now I'm kinda upset. Before I wasn't 'cause we had had a good long run in there and a clean slate can be a good thing, also it was good to see all the stunts removed. Now I'm choked though. If they did this for ecological reasons, than they failed miserably. I really hope that the landowners learn from this and next time (there will be a next time, that's life) they want to protect the integrity of Haro they don't use heavy machinery. A full day's work of 10 guys could have eisly achieved the same effect (i'm guessing) without widneing paths, destroying bark, and creating new paths into the underbrush.

Good conditions for building now though.:)

Dig on.

Well guys, the effort wasn’t all that wasted. They probably had to rent a bobcat to knock down the jumps, and that isn’t very cheap.

You could also look a this as the riding community taking a political stand, however it would have been more productive if the times colonist or another local media outlet (ie new VI, check 6, Monday Mag etc.) after or during the second build. Perhaps one more organized build and a media day would be more appropriate in order to get the municipalities attention? You already have pictures, so there is some evidence to all the previous work.

There was a nice set of DJ’s in Toronto called Rexdale, they weren’t that far out of the city but what made them stand the test of time was that no bobcat could reach the area to knock them down. Perhaps we should find a location in Victoria that would allow some digging without destruction. (i.e. Summit Park, Uplands Park) I am sure there are a few other locations.

PS - Victoria really isn’t that lame, it’s just the elitist old folk that control this city. You guys have to live in Ontario for a few years if you really want to experience boredom - no parks, and no riding during long cold winters.

What happened to the shovel hidden under the third? Buried somewhere?

morley
03-08-2004, 10:12 PM
I don't think it's really a question in regards to "available land", but rather the city giving us permission to use a portion of some local park for more then the traditional means our local leaders have invisioned. There are countless parks that are vancant with grass and dormant recreational fields that could be used. The fact is our local municipal politicians are out of touch with the youth, and now it seems the only way to get publicity is through drastic actions.

It’s always interesting how there is limited financial resources when it comes to the city investing in alternative sports, and always an abundant sum of funds for traditional sports that solely focus on competition rather then creativity. The new Oak Bay and the Gordon Head skate park a prime examples of wasting limited resources. Victoria and other municipalities need to look at the parks in Oregon or Hastings in Vancouver when it comes to skate park design. These facilities not only promote creativity, but they offer lots of room for progression and self expression. Why do municipalities refuse to build progressive parks that draw people in from all over North America to ride (skate or bike). Not only is this good for the local economy but it allows new entrants to the sport to view some the most progressive athletes in the sport. Something you would never see when building a few tennis courts or another white elephant (hockey arena or tennis bubble).

In regards to the pathetic attempt of a park in Oak Bay, I find it quite interesting that they chose to not use the land where the old bmx track was once located, or the field inside the giant oval track beside the Oak Bay dump that’s rarely used. You could easily create an amazing park inside there. Also creating a park inside the track would allow parents to run at the track while their kids could ride at the park. Oak Bay already has the highest property taxes in Victoria and with all the wealth located there it’s not like they would have any problems dealing with a minor increase if needed.

It’s time for these municipal leaders to get their heads out of their ass... The youth is the future and the parents and elders from previous generations have done nothing more then rape the earth of resources, been fiscally irresponsible, and then they ignore the interests of our youth. It's time for change!
