sounds good personally I like Mavic 521's over singletracks lighter and damn strong for the weight in my opinion.

Very nice build, give a looky-loo into the Michy Hot S 2.5 Kevlar (http://cycleus.webmichelin.com/tires/hots.htm)

They are pretty red though:

After they get wet they almost burn your retinas with brightness.

Your build is what I would want on a big bike... enjoy!

GO FOR MAVICS!!!

Why go Sun if you can afford the best rims out there (and they're not that expensive)?

Yeah I am a big(265lbs+-)boy...so I need big parts.

D521's are going for around $60 these days, for someone of your size I'd definately suggest them over SingleTracks.

Yeah i am trying to go for strength and still keep it under 40 pounds.....its a 9.5 pound frame....well see.

Looks like a sick setup, should be a really fun bike to ride, keep us posted.

I'd take a Wipperman chain over the SRAM.

I ahve never had issues with sram chains....and never used wipperman...I hear good things but I like the pins in sram chains better....

For some reason I've had quite a few problems with the SRAM chaings. The Shimano and Wipperman have been bomber. I LOVE sram drivetrain stuff though, just not the chains and cassettes.

thats odd, im totally opposite...SRAM chains have been awesoem on my bikes...

i even still run the same SRAM chain from last season during my A-line whoring stage when i had a day of constant chain suk...

i had my rear wheel redished, and it made fro just enuf room between the tire and teh chainstay to suk the chain in...

while it was in there it was getting twisted over and beaten to hell....you know what... after that happeneing for the entire day...

the chain is still mint... go figure... i was fully expecting the chain to blow apart...

im sold on SRAM chains..my HT's chain is like 3 years old.. same chain, never broke...

course i dont ride the HT nearly as much as my BIGHIT...but it still sees alot of use...

:D

I'd love that Wipperman stainless steel chain, but of course the 100 dollar price tag is hurtin.

Nice:)
Maybe get Mag30's though if you have a couple extra bucks when you get rims.

For your weight, I think the 521 rims are a very solid choice. I've had a set of 521's on my old dually for over 5 years - they have dents (from WHistler) - but are still true and rolling smooth. I had one 521 I wore right through the sidewall of the rim (from V-brakes) - and it didnt even taco/fold on me.

Course, I just picked up a set of Supra Sigma's - now there is some girth!

Nice build but... you can't use a gigapipe BB with X drive cranks. X-drives use a Profile type specific BB. That is gonna be a kick ass bike!

Rivers, sounding good:thepimp:

I'm guessing you finally sold the Surly, woot!!!
Looking forward to seeing the build.

Should be exactly what you want, a little bit of XC, Rose and the Peaks should be a good package for you.

You gotta love the 'old school' XT top mount front shifter.

I have that on my '03 Bullit. It is bullet proof and you get no chain rub. My shifter has been used on my last 5 bikes (12 years) and it is still working perfectly.

Id say different tires and different cranks, probably race face turbines.

mudpuppy
03-01-2004, 06:59 PM
Scott, you prolly won't see it built up, I am moving back to vic at the end of the month. Yeah I noticed that about the cranks.....I am getting the correct BB thrown in with the cranks....and about the tires I loved the XC versions of the Fire's...so it is either those or the blue grooves...I think.....

ATN
03-01-2004, 07:04 PM
Yes, the Fire XC is a good tire. I am intrested in the Fire FR 2.4 as well, and the Blue Groove Kevlar editions.

I'd go for the EA70 easton bar as the price has come down this year, and it's a wicked nice bar. Go for the king headset, it will never fail your great investment. Definitely go for the 521's like everyone else has said they are the best rim mavic makes, top drawer! building them with Alpine 111 spokes would be a good choice if you are a bigger guy they build very stiff, and at a good weight. saint cranks for sure, Axiom road gap pedals and a shimano XT cassette jsut because they shift nicer than the sram, but love the sram derailleurs and trigger shifters! those would be my personal choices...:thepimp:

Oh yeah, XT cassette for sure. I hate seeing daylight between the 8th and 9th rings on a SRAM 11-34 cassette.

mudpuppy
03-02-2004, 09:42 AM
Yeah I have never ridden sram stuff except for chains.....I just thought it was like shimano and you had to use it all or the sifting would be shoddy. Money is a HUGE issue...that is why no EA70 bar. Olot of stuff will prolly get switched out for budget...like pedals and the like.

Oh and the top mount shifter is a must...I have one on my Surly right now....would love to get one on the Dirtbag.
