Hate to say it but I'm gonna end up telling you to stay away from anything you can buy for $200-300. You might be able to find a half decent complete for 300-400 but will probably have one piece cranks and other nice stuff like that. If that ain't an issue, go for it. www.3ride.com has some good deal on new completes.

i was like you but i decided to drop a bit more money and buy a good bmx, when your learning your bike is gonan get shit kicked like mad. So ya want something that is going to stand up to that abuse. If your a fairly hard rider on your mtb than it will carry over to bmx. Get something will good wheels and cranks, other stuff dont really matter. And dont buy from department store.
I spent $640 on mine but i got a pretty good one, u can prob get a good one for around 500

Dont get one from a department store(just like any bike), and id really try to find one with 3 peice cranks, 2 peice isnt really all that bad for smaller techy stuff either. Also you want good wheels, double or triple wall is a must, (alexrims makes some awesome rims), id recomend maybe upping your price just a lil bit, a little bit could make a big difference. And definitely look around at some used ones, you may find a killer deal, but for cheap bikes, look into some Diamondbacks or Haro, they have good bang for the buck. Good luck and have fun with your bmx:)

maybee try a gt or a hoffman complete... there better than a department store bike... and if you mtb too i doubt you would want to buy a 600$ bmx frame only

You can't cheap out a bmx just like you can't cheap out on a mountain bike. Spend more money than that if you plan to get something decent. For that much I'm sure you can find a used big name (ie haro or diamondback) with decent parts.
You won't be getting anything thats full 4130 for that much I gander!
