I was out in the watershed today, and the Surrey Parks guys were ripping down wooden structures. Does anybody know what's going on? It looked like they were just concentrating on tall structures. The drop at the bottom of six seconds:gone. the entrance to upper bender:gone. The platform on upper bender:gone. The trail that is right next to upper bender has had some damage. The bridge at the entrance:gone. The platform you step-up to:gone. They even took all the lumber. It looks like they started at the South end and were working there way North. I think they got as far as the meadow so if you like the goat's trail or the stairway, you better get there early tomorrow.

This is not surprising. In 1998 there was a task force organized to look at trail use in the shed, and there was discussion of completely closing the park to bikes. This was in the days before most of the stunts and skinnies were built in the park, and trail erosion was the big concern. By building unauthorized stunts in the park the riders were just creating a time bomb waiting to go off.

I am not sure Delta will ever allow 'sanctioned' stunts to be built in the shed, but by doing it illegally the image of mountain bikers as park stewards is somewhat tarnished.

Your right, if this was 2000, but lots has happened since, up till this masacre.

what has happened since 2000? I was on the watershed management committee in 98, but I havent lived in the lower mainland since 2000. Was there any official approval by delta of the structures in the park?

In '98 Delta was looking at building a arts centre in the meadow and paving some of the trails. Thankfully they were persuaded to maintain the park in a more natural state.
