Drivin home from school today, I saw 3 kids riding into Beaver Lake park with shovels, when I called to 'em, they yelled "fuck you" at me and kept riding.
#1-great image you're givin rider's there guys.
#2-it's a park. Don't build in there, we're gettin a DJ park in Victoria anyways, so stay out of lands you're not supposed to be riding/building on.
thanks.

building in parks is a bad image for all of us as riders. most of us know this. sadly not every ones does. chances are though that these kids will build one or two jumps and then give up once they get tired of shoveling, or some one trashes their jumps. hell the jumps might get trashed then they might come on here and complain about it...

couldn't see bikes clearly.
kid that yelled at me was on, I think, a crappy ridgid, with a blue XC type helmet....well, taiwan tire type XC helmet.
one of the others had a green switchblade w/ no visor, and I'm not sure about the one at the front of the group.
regardless, if you those kids are readin this, the guy in the red jeep-type truck that you yelled fuck you at?
if you'd stopped to talk to me, you woulda seen the dirt 2 hoody I was wearin, and the bike gear in the back.
give people a chance guys.
also, if CRD catches you in there, you ARE gonna be charged.
they can't detain you, but they can follow you.
we built in the same park when I first started riding, and were warned of the consequences.
I was just gonna give a friendly warning, but now if I see you in there again, I'll call CRD myself.

ya.
problem is, it used to be legal to ride in the whole park, now only parts of it are open, and you're not allowed to build in there. the whole park is posted land, when we built there....3 or 4 years ago, there were hardly any signs up, and none in the area we built in.
I went and walked my dog today and found where they were building.
well, in a 100 meter radius, there are probably half a dozen signs, that even the illiterate morons our school system turns out can understand.
a picture of a bike, with a line thru it....not that hard to figure out.

The way I see it, there's plenty of available areas to build stuff away from multi-user areas. Hell, even Seattle does. Avoid high-traffic areas such as parks...not only is it a waste of time & effort on your part (all the work for a few stunts in a crowded environment) but making the rest of the responsible builders/riders look awfully bad.:nono:

Good on ya for string to sort those kids out. Ièd sugge4st that you donèt involve the CRD however, the less they know about this sort of thing the better, mabye if you can find the stuff they built just take it out. If there is alot of stuff that needs removing, I can bring my van to get rid of it cause I hate it when all that shit is left around (like Haro stunts for example). Lemmie know if Ièm needed.

here, i have a permit to build in beverly park... i went to a city council meeting, brought up the reasons i should, brought up how there was 800 acres of completely dormant, overgrown land, that has 1 softball diamond that the city doesn't bother mowing, and the rest of the land is thick forest...
we currently have about 3 miles of trails there, with care taken for erosion purposes. do we have any stunts built yet? nope. first, we're just worrying about getting everything as 'environmentally friendly' as a bike trail can be...
moral of the story - if you have a good case, make your presence at a city council meeting - i had to attend 4 different ones, but, in the end, we got it taken care of. now, we can build, people don't even know its going on (we clearly haven't picked a busy area), and people who do know its happening are supportive of it.
if you're on the city's side, then they're on yours. remember that.

Why do you have so much against people building stuff in the woods? Dont you realise how the northshore was founded? Atleast kids are out there building and stuff and riding as opposed to just getting in trouble with drugs or sitting there watching tv.

What do you mean shit being left around? Like the stunts themselves or peices of wood or what? Tools? English typing keyboards?

that has to be the worst comparison i have ever seen. as of now no new trails or anything can be built. existing rails can be modified, but new lines can not be cut. i dont exactly know how big this park is but if there as as many signs as stated then these kids really are stupid. if the kids wanna ride and build things than find an abandoned trail, and fix it up. its really that simple. with regards to the drug comment, i dont think that biking has anything to do with it. if the kids are gonna do drugs they are gonna do them. just because they ride doesnt change anything.

Pieces of wood with nails in it, trash that kind of stuff. Not too many keyboards though. Poorly made stunts also qualify as "shit" in my book as well. I think that you know the stuff I'm talking about.

yeah i know what you mean, some of those stunts are really pretty dangerous, like rotted wood holding them up and stuff :(

Yeah, my personal thoughts about stunts in Haro are that they can only serve to cause more problems than we already have. If I was a non cyclist and I saw a bunch of rickety things nailed to trees, a bunch of planks with nails in them and some french keyboards lying around than I'd be pretty concerned as to what is going on. All that stuff can be pretty ugly and destructive if done wrong, and up until now I think that it generally has been. The jumps, from a non-cyclist point of view might be a little more reasonable, espically if they were constructed with respect to the ecology and asthetics of the area, which I think some of them have been. The thing to remember here is that this isn't our land so we should do everything possible to maintain good relations with the other people involved (old folks from the neighbourhood, Queen Alexandra staff, etc.), evern if we don't see eye to eye with them on everything.

There hasen't "always" been stunts in HAro, just over the last two years or so. There has been jumps for a hell of a long time, my roomate has a buddy that used to cut trails in there for BMXing during the 80's! While I'm glad that you've had positive encounters withe the locals, not all of mine (of my friends') have been so friendly, and I don't think that it's safe to assume that everyone around is OK with jumps and stunts in their local woods. What it comes down to is that how the public sees us is important, 'cause they can easily remove all the stunts and jumps, like has been done in the past a number of times. I think that the last 2 years have been great but we're in for a reconing pretty soon and I believe that that day comes closer if we build stunts and trash the place. I'm going to have to stick to my belief that stunts are not good for our cause in that area, and keep on building solid, pretty jumps in Haro and stunts in more low pro locations.
