So my wife and I live in Ca. and we are thinking about moving to Canada, not sure where yet , i was just wondering , what the avg. 3 bed 2 bath , house goes for and what the job market is like. I am an EMT and she is a computer tech, we both ride and love the outdoors. Any advice or suggestions would be great. thanks...........

house prices and listings for canada are here

www.mls.ca

I would say that in general pay will be less and taxes will be much higher than in the US.

And don't forget that criminals have more rights in Canada. The USA has the 3 strike rule, there's a guy in Vancouver on the streets who's been convicted (ie: found guilty) of more than 120 felony charges, and he'll keep commiting crimes because we don't lock up criminals.

Ya - scare them out. Oh - and Canada is 'closed' on Sundays - no football - just whatever beer and deer sausage you stored in the igloo from Saturday.

Don't forget, we aren't hell bent on killing each other, and guns are harder to purchase. And our hospitals are not hotels like yours. Oh, and our currency is confusing.

In bc paramedics usually need to go through at LEAST a year of working in small towns. Good news is you can work multiple shifts back to back. Bad news is the pay sucks... you get paid per call not by the hour. So expect to be spending a lot of time away from home for not much money.

Yeah, the only real way to make money in Canada is to grow dope and ship it south or harbour "terrorists"

we got canadians , lots of 'em , lined up for those emt jobs , so you better work on those hydroponic techniques . if you like back packing , you can probably find work in shipping product south ....

House prices vary according to the community you live in. If you are thinking about BC where I live house prices are relatively high and we're going through a boom right now. The mls site posted above is a good place to start your research.

The job market varies accross the country too. In BC things are slow right now depending upon your career area. We have a provincial ambulance service. Here's a link to the ministry of health website discussing paramedic requirements in BC (http://www.healthservices.gov.bc.ca/bcas/bcasqual.html). In BC we are going through a significant restructuring in the health care field so getting a job in the ambulance service may be difficult, but there may be other private sector options.

As for pay my experience that Canadian wages in cdn $ are higher than in the states, but that our tax rates are higher and the buying power of our $ is less. Of course you need to factor in the medical care system, etc. into your calculations too. As for jobs in the high tech. sector it seems to be pretty healthy right now.

if it wasn't for the fact that there's no work, i'd say move to the island here. you should be able to find something in Van though.

BC = shit economy

I assume you've already qualified for immigration, that's always good to do before you get to the border

You sure about that. Sounds strange to me. what if they applied the same salary terms to the fire dept or police. If I got paid by the cal and not by the hour I would sure as shit not be sitting around the station waiting for the call.

It's a whole lot better than it is here, 'it' being the state of you're country. I'm intending to move to BC or Alberta at some point in the next few years, working on my degree first and then I'm going to apply immigration-wise.

I hope it all goes well for you man! Enjoy!

what are you going to do? sit at the park making daisy chains? or go out and hurt people so you get calls? :P
yes. i am sure. to make it an even sweeter deal... if you have back to back calls and don't return to the station you only get paid for one call.
you are paid an hourly wage as well... i think it's close to a whopping $2/hr now. :(

Environmentally......coming to the BC Interior will give you the least "shock" :)
Your take home pay at the end of the day, no matter what, will be less than in the US....thats for sure.
But your quality and well being of living will be substantially improved...but I suppose you pay for it sort of due to the pocket book decrease.

I have relatives in California, and we've visited numerous times.
I'd have to be payed a stupid amount of money to move down there...and even then, I'd have the intention of coming back asap after making some coin!

BC rocks:cool:
