usually when you rebuild a wheel, you need different length spokes, especially when you go from a 26 inch to a 24 inch rim.
There isn't really such thing as custom spokes unless they are hand made/longer threads added or something like chrome plated...probably all they meant is a shorter or longer size of spoke.
phone to a few shops and check around, they should have whatever size you need.

This is by far the dumbest thread on the board at this time! there's my opinion on it. :D

Odd, where are you that your shop doesn't have a spoke threader?

It's not all bad. You've learned something here.

next time, you will search the internet for a spoke calculator (http://www.damonrinard.com/spocalc.htm) and impress the LBS when YOU tell them exactly what size spokes you need. ;)

You thought you could use the old ones?
I dont even know why you would want to... and all shops should be able to whip up any size you need no problem (you probably get a choice between black or silver! gold if your rossco with 80 bucks  )

It's not a spoke machine,it's just a special tap with really tiny threads.

regular price for spokes is 1 dollar each for DT or wheelsmith spokes.
it's not all that bad...

That seems like a reasonable price, I'm surprised Experience doesn't have a spoke threader.

I've been looking in to making a 24" wheel for indoor riding this winter and I have come up on the same problem ... building a 24" wheel is insanely expensive. I can't believe that if you don't build a 26" wheel you have to custom thread and cut all of your spokes ... someone must make 24" spokes, because there are spokes for almost every other size of wheel out there (10", 14", 20").

Someone told me that you can but them but that you have to buy them in large quantity. Is this true? Anyone know the secret to pre-fab 24" wheel spokes?

Over the summer I built up a 24" wheel, and I ordered my spokes through QBP, when I got them they were the wrong color and that was it. I did the spoke calculator and the shop double checked it and I was set. You shouldn't have to get custom spokes made. But then again I'm in the states and live an hour away from QBP's headquarters. I wait a day for parts while other wait weeks :D
Good Luck with your wheel, sounds kinda fishy to me though.

Man, that sucks! I hate it when bike parts don't fit

And all the dudes complaining about the complaining, I'm tired of it. Please stop, if people want to vent then let them, you don't have to reply or even read it. Live and let live!
