hey
i am planning on buying a banshee scream but here's the dillema. i've just bought a pair of chris king/doubletrack wheels, and the rear is 135mm spacing. the 04 scream is 150mm and the 03 is 135mm. i really like my king hubs but the question is, does the 150mm hub spacing make enough difference to justify ditching the king rear and buying maybe a 150mm hadley or hope hub.
what do you think?
thanks
p.s. the engagement on the king is fantastic.
In all honesty. The differences between the frames are marginal. But also, you could come out ahead by ditching your king for a hadley, which IMO is more reliable. (I've had problems with my King - but I may be the only one).
I love the feel of my king, and my scream/king combo was crazy stiff. But if you're running a granny on the 135, then you're forced into a really skinny tire or serious chain/tire rub unless you go 150.
the new CNC pieces look sexxxxy

wouldn't it be the other way round, the 150m hub would push the chain line farther from cnetre.

im riding the 03 with a Gusset Jury hub with solid 12mm cromo axle (and locknuts) its cut to 10mm for the dropout flats
the 04 will be stiffer and have a better chain line but its not as if the 03 is lacking stiffness or strength? my 03 Scream feels way more solid than my 02 Big Hit
i run 38T x 11-30 and don't have any problems with chain line or tire rubbing even with 3.0" tire?

pip can do me a 04 front end (new cnc bottom bracket/shock mount) with a 03 rear (135mm hub). i want to run a granny ring, so what width tryes can i get away with. i can't really afford to change hubs (don't want to) as the chris king is only 6 weeks old.

wider BB and wider axle will make for a straighter chainline and a wheel with no dish.

exactly. The chain will be further away from the tire.
I am getting the 2004. I want to run 2 wheelsets, so I am going to order 2 formula hubs. The engagement issue is not really that big a deal unless you are doing trials. I mean it's nice and I'd love it if CK made a 150mm rear hub, but for normal riding, I don't think it makes that big a deal. Especially downhill. You'd probably notice it most on really technical climbs.
Anyway, so much is said about components. Someone still has to ride the bike. I laugh everytime my bro outclimbs XC guys on his bullit/super T combo. He ruined his XT hub and now runs a plain Shimano Deore. He still kicks ass.
People fixate on how the parts of their bike will perform and ignore the most important component... uh, the rider.

what about the tyre size with a granny ring?
your right. it's about riding and enjoying yourself (but it's cool to have a bike that works well and that your proud of)

man that is harsh, if you didnt already have the king i would tell you without a doubt get the 04, but if you are really in love with that wheel you might want to.
are you thinking about building a hardtail or anything like that, cause you could use that beutiful hub on there, basically i think the scream is worth it to ditch the hub, but i feel for you.

yeah, I wasn't criticizing you or singling you out or anything, I was just reminding everyone that it is easy to get caught up in having every component be 'the best'.
I'm a bit of a gear whore as well, otherwise I wouldn't have sold my 2003 Bullit to buy a 2004 Banshee. The Bullit was a great bike, and I can't really justify the new purchase, but I still want it.
Plus, I'm old (well, older then most posters on this board - 32), and can finally afford this shit.
And if they made a CK hub that had 150mm spacing, I'd be all over that bad boy.:D
edit: as far as tire size, I'd say you should be able to fit a 2.8"x26" and a 3.0"x24" no problem with the 2004 rear end.

Tire size: 2.5". I run a granny with a Nevegal 2.5" rear tire and have zero rubbing problems. There's actually a good bit of space.

They also cost twice as much and probably don't have as nice of a geometry.

it's not a horizontal dropout...that is gone. there are thru-axle bolt holes now.

i can make my cris king bolt on by changing to fun bolts, which will stiffen and secure the back end loads. not as much as the bolt thru but close. what about the 03 chain line thing. what problems can i expect by using a granny ring? i also want to use a chain guide, which dual ring guide will fit?
thanks

oh,
yeah, I agree.
The chainline issue really only comes into play if you are using a big tire (2.5" or higher). It is like that with any bike. A set of 2.5 michi UST on my old Bullit (2003 model) almost touch the chain. When I had 2.6" Gazzis on there, it was REALLY close in the granny gear.
Check out the EVIL DRS system for dual ring/bash/guide combo. Pretty sweet (around $125-140 USD)
I'd say the 04 scream's drop outs, 150mm hub and improved chainline are better than enough reasons to ditch your CK hub. (and i'm a CK owner myself)
I'm sure you will find someone that will be willing to trade your CK hub for a 12 x 150mm hadley for example. Check the ridemonkey.com classifieds. ssaddict is selling a hadley in the right size for a good price. He might even be willing to trade.
Don't let a hub dictate what frame you should buy. And certainly not all the 03 scream owners that want to convince themselves not to spend MORE $$ into a new swingarm!

Yea, the Fun-Bolt King hub will work on an 03 rear end. Not on an 04, but definately on an 03.
About the chainline. I run a dual ring setup and a 2.5" Nevegal rear tire. I ride in the granny gear all the time and never even come close to rubbing. I could see how you would rub if you ran a 2.8" rear tire.
For guides, I use an MRP LRP guide. It's pretty cool, but I've been dropping chains lately. I am going to go with an Evil SRS here shortly. The DRS works too, I think you might have to trim it a little bit though.

I use a custom made LRP style guide and never drop a chain...even racing.

Lol, ok? How many different ways can you make an LRP? I have only recently been dropping chains. Maybe it's because of the Shiver, lol.
Bear: It's not that I don't want to pony up the cash for an 04 front or rear end. It's that I don't have any problems with the 03. Changing the rear end isn't going to do anything for me except force me to build a new rear wheel.
