View Full Version : Crashing hard and not getting seriously hurt?

Ok this may seem out there but I can't be the only one who dosen't mind crashing hard, as long as I'm not getting hurt to bad, just banged and brusied.
What I mean is, I find it to be quit the rush to be ripping down a trail all confident in your skills flowing along pushing your limits then you make one little mistake or hesitate for split second. The next thing that happens is your being tossed through the air bouncing from one obstical to the next, everything happens so fast then seems to slow down. Your bike is ripped out from under you, you can see objects coming at you and all your thinking is when am I going to stop and I hope my bike doesn't land on me.
You come to a stop and do the bod check, yup everything works, survived another brush with major injury potential.
For the most part I've been real lucky with all the crashes I've had, my buds are always shocked to see me bounce up with a big smile on my face.
I don't know why I don't mind crashing, I can only sum it up as an adrenaline rush. It's like when your in the zone and just ripping it up, everything slows down then when you crash everything gets realy violent, your body goes into survival mod, the endorphines rush is huge. Better then any drug out there.
What's your veiw on crashing, what goes through your mind when
you've had a violent crash?

No concern w/ "is my bike ok?" Curtis? I always thought the concerns were bike 1st, body 2nd...hmmmm.
I agree w/ you otherwise. Kind of like a baptism by fire.

Yeah... I usually worry about the bike... :P
Bodies heal, bikes don't.

even when i broke my ankle before i tryed to stand i was like "oh fuck is my bike ok? Pain is only temporary but good stories last forever and they are always fun to tell when you are getting drunk:D
I hope you were "touching wood" while you typed that... ;)
The most painful crashes are the ones when you see yourself hitting the ground... Last time i crashed real hard i actually thought to myself as the ground was approaching at match 9: "Ouch, this is going to hurt!" :P
I rolled it out finally but still got knocked out for 5 mins... totally unconscious... scarred the crap out of my riding buddies... started to remember stuff a few hours later... :o ;)

I was sitting on a wooden chair.....that counts. I know what you mean about the grond coming up fast, your right those are the worst...mostly due to the fact that you tend tense up hit the ground all rigid. I always just try and go with the flow of the crash never trying to fight too much where I'm going.
Out for 5min.....man that's a serious concusion, were you able to remeber everything from the crash?
My biggest fear is a broken back, which could have come true two weeks ago. I did a small 6' drop which i had to wheelie drop, (can do them in my sleep..or so i thought, totally my own fault didn't scope out the landing) my back wheel got stuck between two rocks stopping my bike dead. The landing was a short steep tranny. I went over the bars hit the ground face first, still clipped in. My bike, all 43lbs if it, was pitched over my head, I remember feeling my back being wrenched, feeling a tear and seeing my bike out of the corner of my eye above my head. I instantly thought my back shouldn't bend that way, Phuck I've broken it. When I stop the first thing I did was move my toes, all was well.
It really scared me ,all the guys I was riding with thought the same thing. I ended up having to walk out, went to a Walk-in on the way home, turned out to have a second degree srpain and strainded ligaments.
Oh well it's all part of the game now isn't it?
yeah, rolling is key, get your body to feel like a bean bag :)
I remembered the details of the crash only the night after... pretty scary...
dude, you were lucky not to have hurt your back! that crash sounds painfull...
Back scares me, but back injuries can be prevented to some degree by building up your abs alot. Takes the strain off the back when you crash.
I'm scared of knee/ankle injury. Once you've hurt those badly enough your with it all your life. Although with back injury you could be paralyzed.... morbid thoughts eh..
Not good to think about these things too much :)

Bear;
Had any other concsions? I'm 36 have had more then a dozen, been knocked out cold a couple times but nothing like the time you spent in the dark.
You are right on the money about the knee thing, I've had 5 operations from scopes to ligament replacement. I cringe when I see a rider bail hard and stick out his leg hoping that will help. You got to figure there's not much sticking your leg out will do when your bailing all you going to do is sparin it at the very least.
I have trained myself to just go down with the ship, if you can keep the bike under you.... my thought is it's going to absorb alot of the impact.

I love a hard, nutty ride...then right at the end when you're hitting the big shit...one big slam with dirt and shit flying everywhere. some blood...it's good.
I hate sprains and stuff though...:(

Nothin like a good F1 wreck. Sprains tend to linger the older you get.

I crahed real bad last summer into a stump, and hit my chest pretty hard. I was really scared at first because about a month before that, a buddy of mine ruptured his spleen, and the memory of that (it was scary as fuck) was fresh in my mind. Anyway i hit pretty hard and i couldnt breathe for quite a while (wind knocked out probally), and my chest hurt like a mofo. When it happened i was scared shitless because my buddy was not able to do anything active for a few months so his spleen could heal, and i didnt want that to happen to me. After about 5 mins of numerous profanities, i looked at my chest only to find some hella bad cuts and bruises, and nothing long term came out of it. When something like that happens the first thing i think is "am i ok", then the bike comes after. Like seriously, what would you rather have, a working bike but you broke your arm or leg, or a busted bike and your dont have a broken arm or leg? If the crash isnt serious, then i look to my bike. I dont understand how people dont care about themselfs because "I can heal, and my bike cant". Also, whats with all these 1 sectance posts? Its pretty damn hard to get a thought out in 1 sentance. Why dont you guys elaborate a bit?? SOrry for the ranting, i had a bad day.

I rarely get hurt when i crash. The worst one i've had was when i was hit by a car, i was pretty sore for a few days. but the weird thing was that i heard the bang of it hitting me before i noticed i had been hit.

When I hit a tree going like 30km/h at the Watershed, I was pretty damn lucky I didn't get seriously hurt. The coolest part was when my bike stopped but my body kept its forward momentum forcing my thighs into my bars causing me to flip over. Next thing I know I'm sitting on my ass wondering how my bike got 10ft away from me and why I have bark in my mouth. I'll never forget that.

Side note - the 1st president of the USA, George Washington, had wooden teeth.
That's what I call a "Kodak Moment". Glad you're around to tell the tale! As scary as those are, it's nice to experience them. It's then that you truly realize that you are alive!:D
