View Full Version : How tight?
How tight do you tighten the cones when rebuilding an XT rear hub? I am finding if I do them too tight the axle does not turn properly and if I loosen them up then there is play in the wheel.

its kinda of a trial and error thing just do them hand tight try it if there is still play tighten them a 1/4 turn try it again until its too tight then loosen it off a 1/8 turn and it should be perfect it just takes a little time and patience

There should be a TINY amount of play ( if you have QR). When you tighten the QR it will take up that play and there will be no play when the wheel is on. If there no play when the wheel is not cinched on, it's gonna be too tight.

blunt boy is right. The best way to tighten the cones is to tighten, mount the wheel in the frame, and then see if the wheel can be moved from side to side. If there is side to side movement take the wheel out, tighten the cones, and repeat. Now that there is no side to side movement, spin the wheel several times to be sure it spins freely and to seat the beaings (displaces some grease on the races). One final check for side to side movement if there is none, go ride.
