View Full Version : Bent Bullit Derailleur Hanger

My 03 Bullit's non-replaceable derailleur hanger that everyone assured me would never bend, that I would tear my derailleur off first, has bent. Big surprise. This occured for no aparent reason, no big crashes, just got dumped off a few skinnies. Laying the bike down on it's side should not have resulted in this!
Well, breaking shit that no one else does is one of my special talents, whinning about it is one of my others. What should I do: just get it re-aligned (I've heard that the 6066 aluminum that bullit's are made from is a bitch to bend back) or should I ask for a replacement from Santa Cruz since the frame is less than a year old?

They won't give you a replacement regardless of it being under a year old, or even a day old. You dumped it and it got damaged as a result, and it doesn't matter how minor the crash was. A bent hanger isn't a manufacturing defect, its crash damage.
They will let you crash replace the rear end for a reduce price if you like.
But, why not ust bend it back? Its thick aluminum back there and it won't break..Just re-allign it and give 'er. No need to change the back end unless it actually breaks off.

First of all, most Bullits end up with this condition eventually. It happens a lot.
Bring your bike into any SC dealer and they will bend it back for you.
DON'T TRY TO BEND IT BACK YOURSELF!
They are supposed to have some special tool or something, but I think most LBS mechanics have their own technique. And if they screw up, that will be covered, (by the shop anyway-probably just a really good deal on a crash replacement).

I was told when I purchased my Bullit that there was a one year no-fault warranty. As in, they don't care how you break it, they'll fix / replace it free of charge within a year.
After that, everything goes under a crash replacement policy where you have to pay a reduced rate for your parts.
I've never had to test this - mine has been, pardon the pun, bulletproof, since day one.
not to mention Grimjack totally horrifed his X.O rear D on a rather large rock...
and his rear Hanger isnt bent....
seems weird yours is bent, thats a preetty beeefy area on the bullit....
for what its worth i'd try to straiten it a bit...just go slow....

Your LBS has a tool to straighten the hanger, it cost me about $20.
The Park version looks like this.

If you want to see how they do it: (http://www.parktool.com/tools/DAG_1.shtml)
You need to take your back wheel in as they need that for an index.
