I know there has been threads about this before, but does any body here ride trails SS? If so, what gear do you use? It's pretty hilly here and almost all of my rides involve going up too. The bike is going to be more XC than FR.

i have a 2:1, 32-16 and climbing is tough but doable. just gotta carry a lot of momentum into the climb and stand up :]

It's gonna be a winter bike to screw around on in the mud, I have a sweet 40t MRP ring that I wanted to use, but I think that I would get too much flex out of a cog big enough to get a reasonable gear with it

I rode 36 / 20 on the trails for a 8 months. It worked fine. I think your right about that 40 t ring and big cogs. All I can say is try it and experiment. You may like it you may hate it. I liked it but I rode with gears for the first time yesterday and it was like being reborn. I'll ride single again though.

I rode a 24:17 or 1.4:1 on fromme for a winter and found it perfect for stunts, but it was pretty slow on the flats. :)
But 2:1 is good for me if I don't have a lot of slow speed climbs and really tech moves.
the bigger the cogs the less chain wear and stretch i nmy experience like a 40:20 for a 2:1 instead of a 24:12. More teeth mean more torque distribution.
good luck
hope you dig the SS ridin' :D
