View Full Version : STOLEN BIKE LEAD

MODS: please sticky. Thanks very much.

I have recently come across what appears to be a very interesting lead on the fellow that attempted to steal my bikes. Take a quick read, here. (http://bb.nsmb.com/newforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28219)

I got both bikes back the same day I made that post. The story behind this is very interesting. Here is the sequence of events:

· Near the end of August, I received a phone call from a potential buyer through Deaf Services. The buyer stated his name was Mike Paterson. He expressed interest in my RM for sale. He asked for my address, which I foolishly gave (note: don’t give out your home address when selling your ride). In order to avoid confusion over the phone in giving directions, we agreed to meet at a spot near my house so he could check out the bike.
· On September 8th, me met at the gas station. He was dropped off on the street by a friend, who didn’t stick around. See my post for a good description of this guy. I found that odd. We agreed on a price, and agreed to meet same time, same place the following Friday to make the exchange. He did not show up that day. I figured he was just another tire kicker.
· On Saturday September 13th this guy comes to my house, and rings the doorbell. He walked to my house from somewhere nearby. I asked him where he was the previous day. He said he was in the hospital, because he had been beaten up. He did have a black eye and split lip to show for it. Told me that he’d have all the money the next Monday, and to please not sell the bike. He was in the process of selling his Balfa so he could pay for mine. No problem. I ask him for his phone number, and after hesitating gives me a number.
· He failed to show up on the Monday. I tried calling, but the number wasn’t in service. At this point I highly suspected he was scoping out my house. Things were just too weird.
· On Tuesday the 4th I come home and discover my bikes were stolen. I called the RCMP to report the theft, and made the post on NSMB.
· The RCMP came, and after getting a full description of my bikes, told me they were sure they had both down at their station. Sure enough, both were down at the station, still locked together.
· The RCMP report that a witness in my neighborhood confronted a man, about 5’9”, stalky, short brown hair w/ baseball hat, trying to carry my bikes down the street. The thief dropped the bikes and ran, at which point the witness phoned the RCMP to report an apparent theft. The RCMP came by to collect the bikes for safekeeping.
· After coming home that same day after picking my bikes back up, I received an e-mail from a fellow NSMB member. He had been shopping for a DH ride, came across a good deal on Ebay, and made the inquiry to phone him if the seller was serious. He received a return call from a guy using Deaf Services. He went by the name of Colin Perry. After making contact with the seller on Ebay, our NSMB member was surfing NSMB and came across a “Stolen bike” post that matched the description to the bike being sold on Ebay.
· The NSMB guy made contact with the Ebay seller through e-mail, and got photos. The markings on the bike were identical, and the seller was very eager to unload, as he kept lowering his price. The NSMB member was able to get the Ebay seller’s home address after making an appointment to go over to check out the ride (a Balfa). Thankfully passed on the address to me.
· The Ebay seller lives about 60 SECONDS down the street from me.

I’m not posting the names of the other fellow that has had his bike stolen, because he’s still trying to get his bike back legally. I have made a few phone calls to the RCMP to see if they have been able to follow-up on this info, but no return call. I expect that this guy will try to break into my home again.

My problem with his actions are as follows: the bikes are possessions of mine- prized possessions, true- but just possessions. The problem is, my wife and two young children sleep here at night. I’m more concerned about their safety than anything else. This guy has shown me he isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer, so who knows, he might be dumb enough to break into my house.

THIS IS A MESSAGE TO THE GUY WHO ROBBED ME: MIKE PATERSON, COLIN PERRY, OR WHOEVER YOU ARE:

If you set foot on my property again, I WILL break your leg. If I find my home burglarized again, I will not only pay you a personal visit to break your leg- weather you have my bike or not- but I will post your home address here on NSMB, and assist anyone who cares to visit your home to give you some vigilante service. I know exactly where you live (nice monkey tree in the front yard, BTW), so if you know what's good for you, don't fuck with me.

Word of advise to sellers out there: never give out your home address, and always meet at a neutral spot in public view. Also, if you have correspondence with somebody from Deaf Services trying to buy your DH bike, get in touch with me, and I’ll sit in with you in the meeting. I can identify this guy very, very easily.

Thanks very, very much to the NSMB menmber who helped me out. I owe you a beer at Seymor Pub one of these days.

Maybe when looking for a "neutral spot" look for one with a security camera so you have reference material if anything does happen.

I'm glad to hear you got your bikes back safe and sound. It pisses me off and probably everyone else on here when peoples bikes get stolen. When i first read your post, i though what nerve the guy had to steal the bikes from your place, especially considering it was alarmed. It shows how stupid theifs can be when they steal bikes and then walk down the street in plain view with them.

Glad to hear you got your bikes back. If anything does happen again, you so need to put that guys addy on here so we can all be paying him a visit. I sure know I will be if it happens again.

When the cop talked to us about Cam's stolen bike, and we told her how much it was worth, she was like "No, this is a very serious crime. Theft over $5000, you can get in a lot of trouble for that"

They weren't too concerned at all.

It's good you got your bikes back, and good that you know where the guy lives. As much as everyone will be all "Beat the shit out of em!" I know I wouldn't be able to start anything with anyone like that. Just think rationally, as we can see you are with the Wife and kids thing.

Dude just give his address anyways. What if anyone on here lives close by? They should be able to protect themselves too. If you live on the shore you owe it to me and anyone else who lives here.

Mods: I'd really appreciate it if you could sticky this for a week. There's some usefull information here for both victims of theft, and potential targets. I'd like to be able to keep it front and center for about a week, to keep the word out.

Thx.

I hope the Balfa owner got his bike back. Strangley when I alerted him with the info he didn't seem to interested in getting it back.

Also when I looked over the bike thiefs other items for sale on Ebay it was all Car audio, mostly subs and amps obviously hot as well.

I hope this guy gets whats coming to him

It is strange how this has all unfolded.

The RCMP have all the info, including the address, the phone number, and two eye witness descriptions of the alleged thief. Really, I don’t know the legalities of an investigation like this, but in terms of value, when you take my rides alone, that’s $12,000.00 in value. Isn’t that considered grand theft?

Maybe the evidence, damning to us, is only considered circumstantial by the RCMP. They did seem concerned, and were very helpful at the time. She said that she would be looking into it. I would, however, like it if she could call me back, so I can find out if anything was done about this.

My motivation here has less to do with the bikes than it does with home security: I don’t want this guy or his accomplice breaking into my home again. The safety and well-being of my wife and kids are head and shoulders more important. Hence, the approach I’ve decided to take in bringing this to the public view, where hopefully the thief will get the message, and do the right thing. That said, I do know where he lives, and if he were foolish enough to try and invade the safety of my family again, I have no idea how I’ll react. It won’t be good, and it won’t be as rational. Believe me: $12K in bikes vs. my wife and kids feeling safe at home…which do you think I place a greater value on?

The safety of your wife and kids is paramount - the bikes are second to that. However, it concerns me that the police are not doing more on this. Have you contact them again with the information you have compiled? Perhaps contacting someone other than the duty officer would help (eg: ask for the staff seargant or the property crimes division lead investigator).

If all else fails - perhaps releasing his address on here would allow some of the more vigilante-inclined members to f*ck him up. There is a time for the police and a time to act to protect future victims of this scumbag.

take it to the papers. it isnt that often that you have eye-witnesses and the fact you know who took and can basically prove it and the cops are just sitting on it. go to the papers and light a fire under their asses.

i think cops think they are too good or too busy to deal with bike thefts. eg: used to work at a shop. guy brought bike in to be repaired. fixed it up. 3 days later he came to let us know his bike got stolen. 2 days after that some guy brought the stolen bike in to get fixed again. called cops and had them meet the guy when he picked up the bike. told the cops he bought it off a friend who had stolen it. gave name, addy and # number of the thief. cops said there was nothing they could do. the kid couldnt even get the bike back because the cop says there was no proof of theft even though we knew the kid owned it and the other guy said that he knew he friend had stolen it. this cop was a real asshole too. like he was too important to deal with us. he kept checking his watch and shit.

I'll talk to my buddy in the VPD and see what he can do about it. He actually had his bike stolen as well! I know alot of cops who are into mtbing who would love to catch some of these thieves so I'll see if I can get something going with them. I'll also ask him about theft over $5,000 or $10,000 and see if that will make a difference. The only obvious problem I see is that they are VPD and I'm not sure if they work in North Van or if that is RCMP territory.

Dude
11-14-2003, 11:17 AM
Let's be a bit fair- if the police are handcuffed by the system (no pun intended), it's not their fault. Knowing several RCMP & VPD myself, believe me...their as frustrated with the laws as anyone.

my neighbour is a cop. They don't give a shit about home alarms and break-ins. They know that they'll never catch the dirtbags and if they do, it's some kid who will not even get any jail time no matter how many times he's caught. I was actually talking to my neighbour one day while she was on "patrol". (I use quotes because did you know that most cops go home and sleep and watch TV for a couple of hours while on "patrol"?) Anyway, she gets a house alarm call and ignores it. She then makes fun of the fact that we have a monitored alarm in our house. She said, "See how seriously we take these alarms? Nine times out of ten it's a false alarm so we give it 5-10 minutes until the call comes back telling us not to bother. After about 10 minutes or so, if we haven't heard anything, we'll go check it out. It doesn't matter anyway because if someone did break in, they are long gone by now, so why rush?"
Sure enough, she keeps chatting with us for another 10 minutes or so. She then got another call telling her to get her ass over to the alarm.
I still cannot believe that they just go home and hang out instead of patrol. Honest to God, she's home for hours on end. And she says that this other dude in my neighbourhood is way worse.
Unbelievable.
