MODS: please sticky. Thanks very much.
I have recently come across what appears to be a very interesting lead on the fellow that attempted to steal my bikes. Take a quick read, here. (http://bb.nsmb.com/newforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28219)
I got both bikes back the same day I made that post. The story behind this is very interesting. Here is the sequence of events:
· Near the end of August, I received a phone call from a potential buyer through Deaf Services. The buyer stated his name was Mike Paterson. He expressed interest in my RM for sale. He asked for my address, which I foolishly gave (note: don’t give out your home address when selling your ride). In order to avoid confusion over the phone in giving directions, we agreed to meet at a spot near my house so he could check out the bike.
· On September 8th, me met at the gas station. He was dropped off on the street by a friend, who didn’t stick around. See my post for a good description of this guy. I found that odd. We agreed on a price, and agreed to meet same time, same place the following Friday to make the exchange. He did not show up that day. I figured he was just another tire kicker.
· On Saturday September 13th this guy comes to my house, and rings the doorbell. He walked to my house from somewhere nearby. I asked him where he was the previous day. He said he was in the hospital, because he had been beaten up. He did have a black eye and split lip to show for it. Told me that he’d have all the money the next Monday, and to please not sell the bike. He was in the process of selling his Balfa so he could pay for mine. No problem. I ask him for his phone number, and after hesitating gives me a number.
· He failed to show up on the Monday. I tried calling, but the number wasn’t in service. At this point I highly suspected he was scoping out my house. Things were just too weird.
· On Tuesday the 4th I come home and discover my bikes were stolen. I called the RCMP to report the theft, and made the post on NSMB.
· The RCMP came, and after getting a full description of my bikes, told me they were sure they had both down at their station. Sure enough, both were down at the station, still locked together.
· The RCMP report that a witness in my neighborhood confronted a man, about 5’9”, stalky, short brown hair w/ baseball hat, trying to carry my bikes down the street. The thief dropped the bikes and ran, at which point the witness phoned the RCMP to report an apparent theft. The RCMP came by to collect the bikes for safekeeping.
· After coming home that same day after picking my bikes back up, I received an e-mail from a fellow NSMB member. He had been shopping for a DH ride, came across a good deal on Ebay, and made the inquiry to phone him if the seller was serious. He received a return call from a guy using Deaf Services. He went by the name of Colin Perry. After making contact with the seller on Ebay, our NSMB member was surfing NSMB and came across a “Stolen bike” post that matched the description to the bike being sold on Ebay.
· The NSMB guy made contact with the Ebay seller through e-mail, and got photos. The markings on the bike were identical, and the seller was very eager to unload, as he kept lowering his price. The NSMB member was able to get the Ebay seller’s home address after making an appointment to go over to check out the ride (a Balfa). Thankfully passed on the address to me.
· The Ebay seller lives about 60 SECONDS down the street from me.
I’m not posting the names of the other fellow that has had his bike stolen, because he’s still trying to get his bike back legally. I have made a few phone calls to the RCMP to see if they have been able to follow-up on this info, but no return call. I expect that this guy will try to break into my home again.
My problem with his actions are as follows: the bikes are possessions of mine- prized possessions, true- but just possessions. The problem is, my wife and two young children sleep here at night. I’m more concerned about their safety than anything else. This guy has shown me he isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer, so who knows, he might be dumb enough to break into my house.
THIS IS A MESSAGE TO THE GUY WHO ROBBED ME: MIKE PATERSON, COLIN PERRY, OR WHOEVER YOU ARE:
If you set foot on my property again, I WILL break your leg. If I find my home burglarized again, I will not only pay you a personal visit to break your leg- weather you have my bike or not- but I will post your home address here on NSMB, and assist anyone who cares to visit your home to give you some vigilante service. I know exactly where you live (nice monkey tree in the front yard, BTW), so if you know what's good for you, don't fuck with me.
Word of advise to sellers out there: never give out your home address, and always meet at a neutral spot in public view. Also, if you have correspondence with somebody from Deaf Services trying to buy your DH bike, get in touch with me, and I’ll sit in with you in the meeting. I can identify this guy very, very easily.
Thanks very, very much to the NSMB menmber who helped me out. I owe you a beer at Seymor Pub one of these days.
