View Full Version : 4 Months Off The Bike -> Got X Rays Back

And to say the least I'm rather scared...

As some of you know, I crushed my T4 and T5 vertabres on June 30th. Well, 4 months later I got the updated X rays back.

In your spine, there are vertabres, and in your vertabres are things called spinal proceses, they are the things that stick out of your back. Going up my spine, they are all normal until T5. They start to rotate and move off center, they're sticking out at approxamitly 25 degrees off center. All the spinal proceses do that until my C vertabres start (I think, It could go higher)

Next, is that part that scares me. In the back of your vertabre is your spinal cord, and the spinal cord has lots of nerves coming out of it at every intersection of the vertabral bodies. Each nerve controlls something different, your C vertabres controll your arms, your T vertabres controll your internal organs and I have no idea about the other ones :P So the small hole that is surrounding the nerve coming out of my T5 vertabre is much much smaller, its actually squeezing the nerve. And it just so happense, that the T5 vertabral nerve sends information from my brain to my lungs, heart, pancreaus and my liver. Can you see why I'm scared? So if I crush my T4 or T5 vertabre again, it looks like my heart, liver, lungs and pancreaus will stop recieving messages from my brain, thus stoping them from working, thus killing me. I'm not gona stop riding, but I think its wise to tone things down a bit, we'll see what happense with me in the future. I'll see you guys on the trails :)

Actually, I believe that T1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 all have nerves running to the heart, lungs, liver and pancreaus, so hopefully I wont die I'll just loose a fifth of my lung power heart power liver power etc.

Sure...take it easy.
And why not? Seriously. Why not?
Whether it's some 2footer or a twenty footer...don't do shit until you're 95+% sure you got it dialed with only 5%- room for accident.
That's what I ride by....anytime of the day. But I'm old and have a Wife and Child to care for:)

No matter what though...shit happens I guess:eek:

You can look at it as you're very lucky or unlucky, I guess. You're not in a chair which is the main thing, and it sounds like you were close. If I were you (under strict medical supervision), I'd get in the gym and start a weight program to strengthen your back, shoulders and abs. Muscle mass is the great protector of our skeletal structure. The stronger you are, the less the likelihood of reinjury.

I understand your passion to ride, but hey... take care.

Lots of other cool sports that may be easier on the back than agressive freeriding. Even if you have to tone down the mountain bike lots of other good things in life.

danny, don't rush, put in the effort to get your strenght up. dd is totally right. make sure you are good to go before you go, so you can keep going.

hope that makes sense. hang in there.

Diggler, still leanin' on Lenin?
and putty's still chillin with Castro.

That's harsh bro. My dad has back problems with his nerves getting pinched between vertebrae, and if he does any considerable amount of work/walking, he's in hardcore pain the next day.
I hope that doesn't happen to you, get better man...

Good luck healing dude. Going to the gym and building more muscle and getting a spine protector are good ideas.

Take it easy, Mountain Biking is fun, but its not worth being in a chair for the rest of your life. Take it easy and further develop your photography skills.

as much as i would like to say take it easy and be careful, that isn't what you are going to do. it is a dilemma, for sure.

i've been told lots of times by doctors not to do this stuff too, and while i have endured more than a few head injuries, whiplash, busted bones, torn ligaments, etc (usually from sports other than cycling), i don't feel like stopping either. and i am old enough to know better.

but when you hear the little voice inside telling you to be careful, listen to it - it's when you don't that you get hurt.

don't get just any upper-body suit... make sure it has an articulated spine.

i don't know too much about those injuries, but, i do know that they aren't something you should mess with...

good luck on the recovery though - if worst comes to worst, you could always be a photographer/videographer for your riding friends.... and those trail days will still be great...

I know what you mean man. I'm dreading that particular conversation with my doctors in a month, but it could have been worse right;) . I'm sure you'll be ripin lime normal in no time albeit with a spine guard. Oh just out of curiosity did you lose nerve sensation when your injury occured? If so when did it come back?
